Deaf dogs: Sky is an 8 year old Miniature Australia Shepherd.
We adopted Sky (formerly named Helen) from Houston, TX thru Deaf Dogs
Organization two years ago. Sky was kind of insecure and abused before
she was placed into foster home. I fell in love with the way she looks
and knew she deserved to have more affection and our love. She improved
a lot in few months after adopted and become secure. Sky is our first
deaf dog we ever owned and we love her. She has two companions...Honey,
a 4 year old tri-pod Maine Coon cat and a 2 year old Havanese, Moe.

Town: Fredonia, Wisconsin
Deaf dogs: Dante is a 5 year old Old English Sheepdog. I
got Dante when I was looking for another Old English Sheepdog to
pal around with my current one. When I first met Dante, he was the
sassiest, naughtiest, fiestist puppy there was.Now he listens better
than any hearing dog and his visual acuity is unbelievable. I have
incorporated hand signals for my hearing dog also. He is a very
gentle dog and has the most incredible blue eyes that I have ever
seen. He likes to sleep in front of the refrigerator, bed or the
door that I come and go from. He definetely is a watch dog. My son,
believe it or not, has taught him how to belch, which I find disgusting,
but Dante seems to enjoy it.

Levi

Skylar
|
Town: Oshkosh, Wisconsin
Deaf dogs: Levi is a 3 year old Australian Cattle Dog. Levi
was adopted from a local shelter, abondoned because he was deaf.
Although I was unsure, and a litte nervous, we did a crash course
education on training a deaf dog. If an ACD is not for the low energy,
a deaf ACD is even less so. He is brilliant and learns anything
I ask him almost immediately. Beyond sit/stay, he plays dead, waves,
spins, and can "leave it" if told when anything is put
in front of him. He currently is in agility and completed basic
obedience in 2 classes and is now in advanced.
Skylar is a 5 year old Chinese Crested.
Skylar was adopted from a national rescue group. I met him in a
deaf dog
forum after adopting Levi. He was brought to me from several states
away, and the first thing he did was try to bite me. The first thing
I noticed was his diaper....ok, belly band. Skylar is 80% deaf.
Although he came dressed, no vet records could ever be located by
the rescue group. Priorities straight - he now knows he is a dog,
he potties outside, walks on a leash without being skittish (every
day) and I believe Levi has shared his herding desires with him.
That's a sight, and one my cats are not pleased with!
Human companion: Jodi, my very tolerant husband, Lonnie,
and two teen agers
Other pets: Nicki, puppy mill Chi, Bajo, puppy mill Chi,
Jessie, Am Staff w/ prior treat agression issues, Murray, Aussie
mix adopted while recovering from mange. cats, bunnies, guinea pigs

Dieter
|
Town: Hartford, Wisconsin
Deaf dogs: Dieter is an 8 year old Dachshund. We got Dieter
from a breeder. We didn't not know that he was deaf until the
day we picked him up. The breeder gave us the option not to purchase
him, I felt that if we gave him back that he would more then likely
be put down, and I couldn't let that happen. I do not regret the
decision we made for one moment. He has been the
best dog you can imagine.
Human companion: Jenni, Scott, Ryan and Peyton

Town: Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Deaf dogs: Keller is a 6 month old Pointer mix. I picked
up Keller from the Wisconsin Humane Society. He is a very well-behaved
if very energetic pup. He loves to go running and likes people and
other dogs. He does awesomely in doggie day care and is very observant
of everything. He'll do just about anything for a treat and is very
even tempered. He picks up new tricks very quickly! I've started
to train him with a vibrating collar and when he's not too distracted
by something tasty (like mud, yuck!) he comes running for his treat.
No one I introduce him to believes he is deaf, so they snap their
fingers behind him and most of the time he sees the movement in
the corner of his eye and turns, so they think I am lying. :-)

Zoey
|
Town: Oshkosh, Wisconsin
Deaf dogs: Zoey is a 12 week old Boxer. She is our second
deaf Boxer we have been lucky enough to own. With the passing of
our beloved "BoyBoy" (10 year old white boxer also born
deaf) in March we set out to find another special Boxer to welcome
into our lives. A breeder close to us had Zoey and with a quick
google search we were hooked up with Panyack Boxers. Erica is a
special breeder and she was looking for just the right home for
little Zoey. Since we had lived with a deaf dog and have a hearing
companion (Lola a four year old Cattle dog mix adopted from the
shelter at the age of 7 months) for Zoey she allowed us to adopt
her! She is a quick learner, already knows sit, stay, down and come!
Potty training with this little bundle is a little bit more difficult,
as she is not fond of the Wisconsin weather in April! We won't give
up-she is a smart girl and will catch on eventually. Anyone who
is looking to adopt a deaf dog I encourage you to do so-they are
the most loyal wonderful dogs that you could own.

Swedish foreign exchange student

Deaf dogs: Corbin is a 6 month old Dalmatian/Hound mix. I
recently adopted Corbin from a shelter up north. When I first went
to see him I noticed that he did not respond to his name, nor did
he respond to clapping or whistling. At the time, I didn't think
much of it, him being a puppy and all. Now that I have him home
and have gotten him tested, I have found out that he is deaf. I
need help on raising him and suggestions about potty training.

Henna
|
Town: Waukesha, Wisconsin
Deaf dogs: Henna is a 7 month old Heeler / Pointer and/or
Dalmatian mix? She is bilaterally deaf and was a stray. She was
in foster care for a few months and is now in her very own home
with me and my Shih-tzu/Bichon mix, Dee Dee. Henna is an Australian
Cattle Dog - and something mix. Dalmatian? Pointer? Who knows! But
she is sweet and smart and we are lucky to have found her!
Update 5/12/2010: Henna is now 3 years
old and is challenging but wonderful! We spend all summer at dog
parks - you'll know her by her speed! She'll probably be the fastest
one there chasing her tennis ball or cars (at Minooka). We have
done agility and
she loves lure coursing. She is cuddly and dramatic. There is NEVER
a dull moment! We have since adopted another special needs dog,
Tabitha. She is a deaf and visually impaired Aussie. Wonderful dog!
She's just a little younger than
Henna and they love to play! Our family keeps getting bigger and
bigger but there's so much fun, that we don't mind!

Marlee

Glory Bea

Marlee is a congenitally-deaf, three-year-old Beagle/Shepherd

what parts are German Shepherd. Her cutest feature is her underbite
and the single tooth that always sticks out. Marlee was our first
deafie and she is truly special little mutt!
Glory Bea is a congenitally-deaf, one-year old Border Collie.
She also has Canine OCD which cause her to shadow chase. We adopted

Town: Washburn, Wisconsin
Deaf dog: Hunter is a 12 week old English Setter. He is an
Old Hemlock Setter. He was intended to be a breeder. As a beautiful
loving and intelligent pup I decided to rescue what would otherwise
have been a culled pup. I am already convinced that he will make a
wonderful pet/companion,and he plays well with his housemates(a retriever,a
springer, and an english toy spaniel). I also have high hopes for him
as a field dog, despite the obvious challenges. I intend to use a training
collar that offers a vibration mode as well as shock correction. You
needent be afraid of these as the gentle vibration mode works with
electrodes removed. At 12 weeks Hunter is 90% housetrained and has
learned come, sit, down, and stay. I would love to hear from people with
setters [deaf] who have been successful in field training.

Joy

Jenny
|
Town: Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Deaf dog: Joy is a 5 year old, very smart Coton de Tulear.
Joy won first prize in puppy obedience class before we knew she
was deaf. She was able to do the commands from my body language
and gestures. She has learned about 190 signs. Some we taught her.
Others she taught herself - ex."Give Paw". She has passed
both the Canine Good Citizen and the Pet Therapy International testing.
She is truly the happiest dog I have ever owned.
Jenny - an older Coton de Tulear sister
who helped tremendously in the education of the deaf puppy. Joy
reads Jenny's body language and knows what is happening. Jenny knows
the command "Find Joy" and gets her to come to me. She
is Joy's security blanket when in strange surroundings. A wonderful
big sister to Joy.

Petey

Hope

Sadie Blue |
Town: Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Deaf dogs: Petey, Hope and Sadie Blue
Petey is a 5 year old Dalmatian. "I got an e-mail about
Petey, saying that his time time was running out and he was a severe
abuse case. Something inside told me that I had to go see him. I knew
right away that we were going to adopt him. He has a crooked little
snout from the previous abuse. He is extremely hyper, a total love
bug and no longer shows any mental signs of the abuse.Petey was our
first deaf dog"
Hope is a 5 year old Dalmatian. "We were foster parents
for Hope. We almost instantly fell in love with her. She is a huge
smiler and more vocal than any dog we have ever met. She is always
happy and loveable. "
Sadie Blue is a 7 year old Dalmatian. "Sadie was dumped
by the only family she had knows since she was 8 weeks old. We fostered
Sadie for several months, then she was adopted to a family but they
returned her. We loved her and really didn't want to let her go, so
we added yet another to the pack. Sadie has 1 blue eye and is a sassy
lady. "

Town: Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Deaf dog: Bailee Blue is a 4-1/2 year old BC/Aussie/Husky mix.
"Bailee Blue was born deaf and rescued in Kansas City at the
Animal Haven. She was there for 4 months before I went to visit my
sister who worked there. Most of our hand signals are agility based,
but we do make it up as we go along. She is very responsive to facial
expressions, and like any BC works off of eye contact, herding everything
from, cats, other dogs and kids. Bailee is also the biggest camera
hound you'd ever meet. She loves posing and extremely patient when
having her photo taken. Bailee has matured into a wonderful happy
companion (her nickname for the first few years was 'devil dog').
And with being deaf her adaptation to the world hasn't been easy.
But for all she's been through, she's one of the sweetest, most socially
loving dogs I've ever owned."
Human companions: Mom Renee, Dad Peter, Uncle Matt, Aunt Erika
& Uncle Derek, Gramp & Gram Bach, and Great Granny Barbara.
Other pets: One BC sister named Bayen, who my sister and I
raised from pup. My sister's two cats - Cass & Autumn (fantasic

Emma |
Town: Oshkosh, Wisconsin
Deaf dog: Emma is a white Boxer with one blue eye and one brown
eye. She is a wonderful addition to our family! We brought her home
knowing she was deaf and we were a little nervous at first. We starting
training right away and she picked up on the hand signals with no
problem. It's great! We never have to be quiet when she is sleeping
or turn the radio down in the car because we are worried about it
being too loud for her. She is such a clown, she loves to be around
everyone and is very obedient for her age. She sits outside on the
porch after school and just waits for the kids to walk by and pet
her. One of her favorite activities is frequenting the puppy park.
Everyone gets such a kick out of her personality and they are shocked
to hear that she is deaf. She's such a good girl! We love her so much
and are so glad that she is part of our family.
Human companions: Emma has two skin siblings, Mike and Kait
and her Mommy and Daddy.
