Western Australia Deaf Dogs

Lilly
Town: Perth, Western Australia
Deaf dog: Lilly is a 4 year old Maltese. Lilly has only recently gone deaf due to illness. She's picking up our handsignals very quickly! She has recently come over to Australia with us (from NZ). She is loving Australia and all the new smells. It has been difficult re-teaching her and also disciplining her but I think we have an even stronger bond now.

May and Matilda

Town: Dunsborough, Western Australia
Deaf dog: Matilda (Tilly) is a Blue Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog). "We bought Matilda in Corowa, at 6 weeks old. We found out she was deaf at 3 months. She is very smart little girl but cheeky and barks like you wouldn't believe!" She knows lots of signs, is very smart and faithful, and loves life!

Update 6/24/10: Matilda is now 8 and a half and is more settled. She is the most faithful dog we've known and has so much character. She communicates easily and is happily living a deaf life :)
Human companions: Meg and her Husband
Other pets: Her Border Collie Companion May and a Pink and Grey Galah named Jack

Town: Armadale, Western Australia
Deaf dog: Hunter is a 1 and a half year old Stafforshire Bull Terrier. I bought Hunter when she was 5 months old knowing she was deaf. Since Hunter has been with us she has excelled in her training and there isn't much she can't do. Hunter loves the beach and is a great swimmer. This year we hope to start agility or possibly obedience if they will accept her.
Human companions: Abigail
Other pets: Hunter has a wonderful big sister called Kesha who has helped her do so well in training.

Town: Perth, Western Australia
Deaf dog: Steele is a 1 year old Blue Heeler Australian Cattle Dog. She can sit, stay for limited time only, play fetch, come and is the best companion. I believe that her disability is not a hindrance but in some ways a benefit when having a cattle dog due to her need and reliance she has taken to me much quicker than if she could hear.

Town: Armadale, Western Australia
Deaf dog: Hunter is a 1 year old Stafforshire. I found Hunter on the perth gumtree site. She was advertised as deaf but I fell in love with her pic and decided I just had to have her. I thought it would be difficult training a deaf dog but in so many ways I found this wrong. Hunter has learned at an exceptionaly fast rate, much faster than my 3 yr old dog that can hear. Because Hunter is learning so fast and has much energy to burn I have decided to enrol her in agility classes. I have also found out that there is another deaf dog attending the same agility school Hunter will attend. Hunter is so confident in herself that when she swims at the beach she will swim out 20m to retrieve a toy.
Human companions: Mummy and Daddy and we often visit Grandma and Grandad.
Other pets: Kesha (Kelpie X Staffy) Shifty and Misty (Cats friends)

Chelsea

Town: Perth, Western Australia
Deaf dog: Chelsea is a beautiful little 8 week old Great Dane pup. She is only 4 weeks in the photo. We are picking her up in a few days at the age of almost 9 weeks. We have read a lot about raising and training deaf dogs and are confident that we can give her a really good home. We also have a little boy (hearing) from the same litter to keep her company and help her with cues that she might miss. We are already in love with both of them.
Human companions: Sam and Ros
Other pets: Another hearing Dane

Keito

Town: Bunbury, Western Australia
Deaf dog: Keito is a 1 year old Papillon X. Keito came to me under strange circumstances. His previous owners hadn't realised that he was deaf when they adopted him. After a vet check that confirmed their suspicions, they had a family meeting and decided that for the sake of their young children that they would rehome him. I then found out that he was to be euthanaised. He was all I could think about for days. He is such a lively, confident and clever little thing. Keito is a joy to have. He learned the sit sign within minutes (he loves food which is handy). Even after only a few days, I couldn't be without him. Its a shame he won't ever hear the world but to look at him, you wouldn't know any different and he doesnt seem to care :-)
Human companions: Dani
Other pets: Barney the Cat

Lilly

Town: Karratha, Western Australia
Deaf dog: Lilly is a 6 month old Staffy X Ridgeback. We bought Lilly from a litter of 8 pups of which 2 were deaf. We realized she was deaf very soon after she came to our home. There is no way we would give her back. I think we are really blessed. Lilly loves everyone especially other dogs. She has been bitten many times but keeps going back for more.
Human companions: Carol, Ross and Kym

Ned

Town: Kununurra, Western Australia
Deaf dog: Ned is a 10 week old Blue Heeler. My partner and I always wanted to have a deaf puppy so we told our Vet to contact us if she hears about a deaf puppy. Two weeks ago a guy called around and gave us the puppy. We have already taught him a couple of signs and we are very pleased to say he knows the signs. He is a really intelligent puppy and we look forward to teaching him more signs. Our female Blue Heeler accepted Ned very well and she is like a mother and bosses him around.
Human companions: Carol Chittleborough and Glenn Teeuw (also deaf)
Other pets: A female 8 year old Blue Heeler.

Bandit
Bandit with his best friend, Tody the Beagle

Town: Perth, Western Australia
Deaf dog: Bandit, a 2 year old blue heeler, was initially rescued from a local pound to be recruited for Australian Quarantine Services as an active dog. Due to his deafness he was not accepted into the program. "I fell in love with him and decided to train him myself. He is a very clever and quick learning dog. He is now being trained to be a Truffle Detector Dog, so that will be his new venture in life starting in winter."
Human companions: Lexy Martin

Diesel
Diesel
Town: Rockingham, Western Australia
Deaf dog: Diesel is a 5 year old (17 months in the picture) Australian Cattle Dog. "Diesel is absolutely gorgeous - I fell in love with him at first site at K9 Rescue (a dog rescue organisation) where I volunteer. He knows quite a few signs and is still learning more - the hard part is making them up! He is a very friendly, loving dog."
Human companions: Kendall, Carl, Layla and Asha.
Other pets: Bonnie and Jasper
