Rex

Town: Melbourne, Victoria
Deaf dog: Rex is a 4 month old Blue Heeler. Rex was adopted from the RSPCA. We were looking for a play mate for our other dog when we came upon him asleep in the pen and had to wake him by banging on the ground. Such a loving and affectionate dog.Three weeks at dog school we entered our first trial and came in second place and moved up two grades, what a top dog.

PS, dont tell him he is deaf, he doesnt know.

Lilly

Town: Melbourne, Victoria
Deaf dog: Lilly is a 3 month old Blue Heeler. We received Lilly after looking for a pup after our elderly dog passed away. I responded to an ad on the internet about a little Heeler pup needing a good home. I went to meet "Lilly" and fell in love straight away. We are commencing training and I feel she will do really well. I have been told by many people that I should get rid of her or she would be better put to sleep, all because she is deaf and those people really believe that she is untrainable, but I plan to prove them all wrong. Lilly is very dependent on me and is my shadow. I take her whereever I can and already she is picking up a few signals that I am using with her.

I would love to meet others with deaf dogs in my area.

Human companions: Elizabeth, Darren, Chloe and Jack Harrigan
Other pets: 2 other Dogs, Scooby and Faith, 2 Cats, Harry and Harley. Numerous Reptiles.

Camera shy Town: Corryong, Victoria
Deaf dogs: Sadie is a beautiful purbred Blue Heeler Cattle Dog and we purchased her at 5 weeks old. We did not know she was deaf at the time. When we discovered her deafness after a couple of weeks we rang the breeder and he suggested we return her and that he would put her down and give us another one. We became attached to her the minute we picked her up, as a matter of fact she walked over and picked us! She is so beautiful and is so full of life. A typical Blue Heeler, she owns us, we don't own her!! Yes, a deaf dog is a challenge and probably the biggest worry is the fact that we live on the main road so she is never allowed outside of the gate unless she is leasched. Probably her greatest enemy is humans who continually want to touch your dog without asking first. Deaf dogs have to be trained to WATCH their masters and other humans can be very distracting and can in fact be the cause of accidents.
Human companions: Betsy Christie and husband.
Other pets: Goats, cat, chickens, cows, horses.

Ruby & Button
Ruby & Button
Town: Geelong, Victoria
Deaf dogs: We have 2 deaf Dalmatians Ruby and Button.
Ruby, was born in the first litter that my dog Krickett had. She has the biggest smile and if you didn't know her you would think she was snarling at you. She is very bright and was always the one to work out how to get out of the yard or into the chook pen. She learnt very quickly when we used hand signals with her. We love her heaps. We were told to put her to sleep when she was a pup by 2 breeders but 2 vets felt she wouldn't be too much problem so l feel that we did the right thing by us and her.
Button was born in Krickett's final litter and we decided to keep her as well. I've become more involved in Obedience training with her and she is now in level 2. It's been fantastic for her socially and she loves everybody and loves chatting to her doggy friends in her own doggy way. When she did puppy class she won the blue ribbon from 15 other pups who all had their hearing but I'm glad she loves those food rewards it really helps her training. We think she is as cute as a button.
Human companions: Kris, husband Pete and kids named Josh, Alyce and Ben.
Other pets: 3 cats, 2 Chooks, Krickett (Button and Ruby's Mum) and 2 pet rats.

Beau
Beau

Town: Melbourne, Victoria
Deaf dog: Beau is a 13 year old Beagle. "Beau found us at the RSPCA home in Burwood as a 12 week old pup. He is now my only companion at home, and has recently gone deaf. It broke my heart when I realised that he could no longer hear me, or the fridge door opening, or the lead rattle at walk times. I am now trying to learn fast how to help him live a happy life. He gives me strange looks when I talk to him, but he understands hugs, cuddles and kisses. He sleeps so close on the bed at night now, and spends hours just staring at me, watching what I do. I can't imagine what life must be like for him without sound! He has always had a sense of humour, which he doesn't seem to have lost, still likes to tease me! He misses out on chasing cats out of the garden now, and doesn't hear my son when he comes in to visit, so we have to keep letting him know we are around, so he can join in with things like he used to do. Other than the deafness, he is very fit and healthy for his age."
Update 10/16/06: My dear Beau passed on to the Rainbow Bridge on May 29th, 2005, at the age of 16 1/2 years. He sent me another tan and white beagle within two weeks of leaving me, to help ease the pain of losing him. I still miss him very much, and will always hold his precious memories upermost in my heart. He taught me about love and loyalty. Have fun chasing hares at the Bridge, my friend, and I'll see you again one day soon.
Human companion: Elaine Soane
Other pets: I now have Scot, another tan and white beagle, aged 3. He has introduced me to the world of dog shows, and I have a whole new life and a wonderful circle of friends. We travel together, have a very strong bond, and I know when Scot reaches old age, that I will cope with his infirmities just as I did with Beau, because beagles are very smart, and so adaptable.
