Utah Deaf Dogs

<< Back to US map
Town: Salt Lake City, Utah
Deaf dog: Milo is a senior of unknown age and breed. Milo found us one day as I was browsing a pet rescue website. We drove 45 miles to meet him. It was love at first sight! He wheezed, snorted, limped, listed to the right, but we had no clue our senior friend was deaf too. Mr. Milo has brought so much happiness to our lives. We ADORE this silly old guy. We use a mix of hand gestures and ASL with him. When he's tired of "listening" to us, he simply turns his head away and won't make eye contact! Funny, funny guy.
Human companions: Lisa, Laurie, Katy, Holly and Natalie.
Other pets: Maizy (rescued Yorkie), Karma and Muffy our two Kitties

Town: Roy, Utah
Deaf dog: Roxy is a 3 year old American Bulldog/Boxer mix. I rescued Roxy from the shelter when she was 6 months old, I had them hold her for me for a week so I could research deaf dogs and what the responsibility
would hold. We were meant to be, I went back and got her. Her previous owner had abused her because she barked alot and he didn't know she was deaf. She has been the most wonderful and loving dog ever. I just recently found out from the vet when she was taken in and thought to be having seizures, that she is mentally retarded. She is still so smart and a wonderful girl! And I wouldn't change her for the world!!
Human companions: Natalie and a thirteen year old Daughter
Other pets: White Boxer- Baby Girl

Nell
Nell

Town: Salt Lake City, Utah
Deaf dog: Nell is a 3 1/2 year old Boxer. Her dad writes "We've now had Nell for about 2 years and she continues to be a great dog. We have trained her using modified ASL (American Sign Language). We've had to be creative on what our sign for "pig ear" was. We've also taught her to come when we flip the lights on and off. She depends a lot on her campanion, Kanga. Most of the time, it's easy to forget she's deaf, as she acts like any other dog.

Update: 1/13/09 We are sad to say that we lost both of our girls, Nellie and Kanga over the last year. Nellie's soul mate in life passed due to old age in December, 2007. Nellie never fully recovered the loss, but boldly went on. She was diagnosed with cancer in October 2008, and passed away gently on January 12, 2009. We are all the better for having known her. Her old name tag read "Nellie, I am Deaf" with our phone number. We put a new name tag on her before burying her which simply read, "I was once deaf, but now I hear".

Human companions: Kevin and his partner Brandon
Other pets: Kanga, a 6 year old brindle Boxer.

Missy
Missy
Town: Tooele, Utah
Deaf dog: Missy's Foxy Kisses is a 2 year old Sheltie/Red Heeler mix. Missy was badly abused, and didn't want to be touched when we got her. She was frightened of men and children, and would be aggressive with them. 18 months later, she is a fairly well trained dog, and a good neighborhood citizen. Of all the dogs I've owned, Missy tries the hardest to please. She is also a little hit and run artist, having great fun licking us behind the knees, then scooting outta the way! She gets along well with other animals. She's a happy, funny little girl. You should see her doing the "Butt Scootin Boogie" dance that my husband taught her. Too funny! She has a Webpage.
Human companions: M Maillé (whose spouse is deaf)

Camera Shy
Town: Salt Lake City, Utah
Deaf dog: Jade (Baby) is a 6 year old Great Dane. "Baby is the first deaf dog I have ever owned or known. I bred my harl bitch and got a litter of one, Jade. She has been a blessing to me and my family in so many ways. At first we were all worried about such a big dog being deaf, even Danes that hear can cause a lot of trouble, if not trained correctly. I knew I could train this dog to be independent and obedient with lots of time and love. Well I'm very proud to say that nobody can tell that Baby is deaf, in fact people don't believe me at first when I tell them she is deaf. Mostly I keep it a secret, not because I care about what people think, but because she is my protector. People are frightened by her looks and size. If they knew she was deaf and couldn't harm a flea, she wouldn't be a very good guard dog!"
Human companions: Marnie Brunyer, his daughter Lacy and girlfriend Shauna
Other pets: Zen, a border collie and Sugar, a sheltie.

Neleh and Bailey
Bailey and Neleh
Town: West Jordan, Utah
Deaf dog: Neleh (Nel-E-Ah) is a 17 month old Border Collie, whose birthday is February 14, 2002. "Neleh has so much character. Her favorite thing to do is chase her shadow. She could do that for hours. She is so loving yet such a puppy. She is doing great with sign language. Neleh will be going to school soon. We love her and are happy with our choice to keep her. We knew she was deaf when we got her, but we were willing to give it a shot and we are glad that we did. Bailey now has a younger sister that picks on him."
Human companions: Gina and Jason Sandoval
Other pets: Bailey, a 4 year old Jack Russell Terrier.

Hank
Hank
Town: Salt Lake City, Utah
Deaf dog: Hank is a 2 year old Australian Shepherd mix. " I got him when he was 11 months old from some neighbors that were going to get rid of him. He had been born outside and had never been in a house at all until a couple of weeks after I got him. In fact when I first got him he wouldn't even come to me but he now sleeps on my bed. I got him as a companion for an older dog I have but she hates him for some reason. I have since gotten Hank a puppy and they love each other. Hank carries their dog dishes around the house and he carries them around outside too. He tries so carefully not to spill food but can't hear it dropping when he's carrying the dishes around."
Human companions: Julie Wu
Other pets: Sadie, a 13 year old husky mix female; Dodger, a 1 year old lab mix, he's either mixed with a great dane or a pony, he's a very big boy; 3 parrots, and 3 cockatiels.

Scout
Scout
Willow
Willow
Town: Richfield, Utah
Deaf dogs: Scout is a 3 year old Australian Shepherd. Due to his merle-merle ancestory he is completely blind, deaf in one ear and has partial hearing in the other. We are working on Obedience with him, using both voice commands and touch commands. Scout spent two years in rescue but he has now found his forever home here with us!"
Willow is a one year old Australian Shepherd. "I originally saw Willow (then Wiggly Wilma) on Petfinder.com. I adopted Willow from a HIGH kill shelter in southern Utah where she had stayed there for a month and a half...the usual holding period for strays is 3-7 days - longer if they have space. Lucky for Willow they all loved her and was making an extra effort to keep her alive and find her a forever home."
Human companions: Amanda Garman
Other pets: Beau, a Cockatiel.
