Daisy
Town: Scarborough, Yorkshire
Deaf dog: Daisy is a 2 year old Staffie Bull Terrier. Daisy is a lovely white deaf Staffie (Daisy Dummpa) is what we call her, she
head butts everything and when she jumps on you, you know about it. She spent 12 months before I got her in RSPCA kennels, nobody even took her home to give her a try, probably because she was deaf, They all lost out on a fantastic dog. She just loves life, dogs, cats and people.I was at the RSPCA kennels with my Mum and Dad looking for a dog for them. All the dogs were jumping and barking when I set eyes on Daisy, and knew she was the one for me. I had lost my last dog 2 years earlier and was still getting over her, but I knew we had to be together.
Human companions: Martin and Michelle
Other pets: Possom (Cat)

Farah

Town: York, North Yorkshire
Deaf dog: Farah is a 3 year old Border Collie. Farah is a rescued Border Collie brought over to the UK from Ireland. She was left at the pound by her family and aged 6 months was due to be put to sleep. I adopted her from Wiccaweys (specialist BC rescue organisation) knowing she was deaf but trusting Sarah and Paul to reccomend the right dog for me. I can't express how wonderful Farah is - great nature, super attentive and just like a regular collie in all the ways that count. She's very touchy feely and loves to sleep next to you, or a soft toy for comfort. Honestly the only problems we struggle with are my lack of ability to come up with signs fast enough to match her behaviours! Farah has taught me so much, not just about deaf dogs but about training and building relationships in general. Plus, compared to my older nervous hearing dog she's been a doddle to work with. I would actively choose to rescue another deaf dog!
Human companions: Morag
Other pets: Finn - an 8 year old rescue Collie who came to me aged 4yrs with dog and human aggression issues, extreme phobias and reactivity. Now a happy well adjusted companion who looks after his adopted deaf sister!

Mackie
Mackie

Town: Rotherham, South Yorkshire
Deaf dog: Mackie was a rescue dog who was unwanted again - probably because he appeared disobedient. We were talking about having a companion for our older dog Flo, who was missing her old friend Wowwow the cat. Mackie came to us by a fluke - my husband (Andy) called on his best friend (Mick) who told him of a little dog who was going to be homeless. He was the best Valentine surprise ever! His deafness is only an issue when we need to keep him safe.
Human companions: Lisa, Andy, Luke, Lauren and Anji
Other pets: Flo (Dog -13years) and Milly (Cat 4Years)

Barnie
Barnie
Town: Leeds, Yorkshire, England
Deaf dog: Barnie was adopted from RSPCA at six months and is very responsive, expecially to cuddles. He gives a lovely smile to welcome home, or to cover when he knows he has been naughty. He has a huge sense of humour and knows that if he is funny he often gets out of being a naughty boy. I have to tell him off verbally as well as by signing as the other dogs like to hear what I am saying. Barnie learns reasonably quickly but can deliberately choose to 'not see' commands. He refuses to acknowledge an understanding of the stay command - though he can be tricked into revealing total understanding. The other dogs react to signed commands but I always give the verbal at the same time. Barnie much prefers to accompany us on trips and will behave perfectly while on trips. He is mostly well behaved, a total clown and airhead, reliant upon us and demanding but - I cannot imagine life without my loveable mutt. The fact of Barnie's deafness is of no consequence. Intelligence is not indicated by hearing. Signing is just another way of communicating. Barnie continues to be a total clown who enriches our lives with the affection he insists on lavishing upon us. His photo shows just how handsome he is.
Human companions: Carol Perry and Husband
