Winnie

Town: Leintwardine, Shropshire, West Midlands, United Kingdom
Deaf dog:
Winnie is a 14 year old Dalmatian. We adopted Winnie ( previously Pongo ) in Nov 2000, he is now 14 years old.
He is full of character and could sniff out a Smartie in a Wheat Field...loves his grub. He's sweet affectionate and loyal to his family. We lost his long term partner Harvey last year, Win was very depressed and missed his hearing buddy so much. We were lucky to adopt a 3 yr old Liver boy called Panda soon after, and the two are firm friends. In 2003 Win had a very bad spine injury after tripping up while running. 2 Discs ruptured and he had major surgery to save his life. He was paralysed for 3 wks, had to be carried everywhere, and I even had to express his bladder by hand. I immediately took him to an animal hydrotherapy pool.....before he could walk. Slowly he regained muscle control, walked awkwardly then developed good mobility....running, climbing stairs and leaping over ditches. I still take him swimming weekly, 5 years on. He is an elderley Gent now, and the excercise keeps him agile. He has been on many holidays to Scotland and the Lake District, and surely is the only Dalmatian to greet a returning Friend from the QE11? I love this dear old boy more than I can say.He never gives up despite his age and disabilities. His deafness has never held him back, in fact it is part of his character.

Update: Winnie had to be put to sleep on 20th April 2009. His back legs started to fail, and he became a bit incontinent at the end. He was 15 yrs old which is a wonderful age for a Dalmatian. I think his deafness kept him young.......no stress from noise! We loved him dearly and it was a heartbreaking decision, but it was time to let him go.

Daisy Mae

Luke Sky Walker a Dalmatian
Luke Sky Walker

Town: Leominster, Herefordshire, United Kingdom
Deaf dog: Daisy Mae is a 7 week old Dalmatian. We got Daisy Mae from a breeder who couldn't bring herself to put her to
sleep. We have only had her for 4 days and already she is learning sign language. She is a very smart cookie. This is the second deaf Dalmatian we have had (Luke being out first, he died on 29th March this year) She is a real joy and she and
Poppy, our hearing Labrador Retriever get on so well.

Deaf dog: Luke was one of the puppy's in the Disney film 102 Dalmatians. Nobody wanted him and the dog trainer just wanted a good home for him. He is VERY affectionate and gets on well with our other two hearing dogs. His best pal is Dotty our other hearing Dalmatian. She is very spotty. Although it was hard going at first Luke is growing into a smashing little boy, he is handsome, full of energy and we love him to bits. He lives with us in a sheltered housing scheme for older people so he has 35 adopted grannies and grandpas who think he is great!

Update 3/30/2010: Sadly on 29th March 2010 Luke had to be put to sleep. Dotty our hearing Dalmatian died on 15th March 2010, Luke was diagnosed with a brain tumor 4 days later and died 2 weeks to the day after Dotty, a very very sad few weeks in the Lee household.
Human companions: Sue (Mummy) & Gary (Daddy).
Other pets: Poppy a Labrador Retriever who is 6 years old

Dbs is a 2 year old Border Collie. We got Dbs at 5 months old not knowing he was deaf. he was in a bad state when we picked him up from a house in birmingham. we took him to the vet to check him over, he was all skin and bone, but just a month after we had him he was a different dog. he played with his toys and interacted with people, where before he just cowered in the corner. After 9 months he has come on as a treat, he obeys our hand signals which we made up. I can even let him off the lead now as long as I have a ball. Town: Birmingham, West Midlands, United Kingdom
Deaf dog: Hi, I'm Dawn, 'mom' to Jade. Jade is a little deaf Yorkie who at the age of 12 years was badly neglected by her owner, and ended up at the RSPCA where I volunteer. She has behavioural and health problems and was going to be put to sleep as they thought she was not rehomeable......Well to cut a long story short we found each other and she is gradually learning to trust and love. She is incredibly intelligent and it doesn't matter to me at all that she is deaf, in fact it's more fun because I love teaching her new signs and seeing how quickly she learns them. She knows sit, leave, paw, good girl, naughty girl, come here, go away, do you want to be picked up...and more! Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

I'd love to hear from any other owners of deaf dogs, particularly from the UK
