Toastie

Jed
|
Town: Coventry, West Midlands, England
Deaf dog: Toastie is a 10+ year old Terrier Cross. Nothing
is known about Toastie before the beginnning of November 2006 when
he was brought into the Dogs Trust Honiley by the Dog Warden. He
was neutered then succumbed to every infection and virus possible,
knocking on heaven's door. He came home a few days before Christmas,
and after 6 months became a Pets as Therapy Dog. We have no idea
how long he has been deaf, and a couple of weeks ago found by accident
he could hear a clicker... a much better way to wake him up! He
learned basic hand signals (the same ones I use for my hearing dogs)
by copying Alice Terrier.
Jed is a 10 month old Boxer Cross. Once Toastie
had stabilised I felt I could offer a home to another deaf dog...
not an active search, but if I happened to hear of the "right"
one we would investigate further. Jed's mum is a boxer, who had
a romantic interlude one day... dad unknown (but possibly pointer).
His original owners did not want him when he was found to be deaf,
so at the age of 7 months he ended up in rescue - living in the
house with other dogs. As a result he is housetrained and well socialised.
Sadly Alice died, so I lost my chief trainer, however decided to
go ahead and see if Lucy and Toastie liked Jed (and vice versa).
They all did, so Jed came home with us. He has bonded well with
everyone but he absolutely adores Lucy, which means he has plenty
of off lead exercise... if he ignores my recall signal (we're getting
there slowly) I just call Lucy and he follows her.
Human companions: Georgina Murray
Other Pets: Lucy Greyhound, aged 8 (but she doesn't realise
8 year old greyhounds are meant to slow down, and races round playing
with Jed)

Town: Birmingham, West Midlands
Deaf dog: Hi, I'm Dawn, 'mom' to Jade. Jade is a little
deaf Yorkie who at the age of 12 years was badly neglected by her
owner, and ended up at the RSPCA where I volunteer. She has behavioural
and health problems and was going to be put to sleep as they thought
she was not rehomeable......Well to cut a long story short we found
each other and she is gradually learning to trust and love. She
is incredibly intelligent and it doesn't matter to me at all that
she is deaf, in fact it's more fun because I love teaching her new
signs and seeing how quickly she learns them. She knows sit, leave,
paw, good girl, naughty girl, come here, go away, do you want to
be picked up...and more! Who says you can't teach an old dog new
tricks?
I'd love to hear from any other owners of
deaf dogs, particularly from the UK

Deaf dog: Sally is white all over, with a tri-color mask. She
is a wire hair coat and has a docked tailed. I am her 10th home in
two years and she is only 2 years old. I have had her just under four
months. She is currently over-coming a nervous break down due to previous
ill treatment. She has a compulsive anxiety disorder and many other
behavior problems. However in four months she has climb big hills
and is an adorable little girl, we just have to reach deeper. I myself
am a trained canine phycologist and we live with my husband and Lucy
(JRT) and Albert (Poodle). I will try the list for her aggression
as I am out of idea's and I hate that she has to wear a muzzle when
we go out.
Human companions: Debi and Roger Wilson.
Other Pets: Two other dogs, Lucy (JRT) and Albert (Poodle),
two Budgies, and five fish.

Ollie |
Town: Birmingham, England
Deaf dog: Ollie Dalmatian/Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Ollie
is a white Dalmatian cross with brown spotty ears and a very curly
tail. We bought Ollie from the Birmingham Dogs Home not knowing that
he was deaf. We realised the next day because he loves being vaccuumed!
He relies on our other dog a lot but he is starting to learn hand
signals slowly. It is very difficult not to spoil him becuase he is
such a lovely dog. Ollie was a stray and had been in the Dogs Home
for 4 months where he had been placed with many families but returned
after one day
Human companions: Lizzy Darbyshire,Janice, Mike and Jenny
Other pets: Penny (Whippet cross) and Mimic (a guinea pig)
