Toastie

Jed

Town: Cardigan, Wales, United Kingdom
Deaf dog: Toastie is a 12+ year old Terrier Cross. Nothing is known about Toastie before the beginnning of November 2006 when he was brought into the Dogs Trust Honiley by the Dog Warden. He was neutered then succumbed to every infection and virus possible, knocking on heaven's door. He came home a few days before Christmas, and after 6 months became a Pets as Therapy Dog. We have no idea how long he has been deaf, and a couple of weeks ago found by accident he could hear a clicker... a much better way to wake him up! He learned basic hand signals (the same ones I use for my hearing dogs) by copying Alice Terrier.

Jed is a 2 year old Boxer Cross. Once Toastie had stabilised I felt I could offer a home to another deaf dog... not an active search, but if I happened to hear of the "right" one we would investigate further. Jed's mum is a boxer, who had a romantic interlude one day... dad unknown (but possibly pointer). His original owners did not want him when he was found to be deaf, so at the age of 7 months he ended up in rescue - living in the house with other dogs. As a result he is housetrained and well socialised. Sadly Alice died, so I lost my chief trainer, however decided to go ahead and see if Lucy and Toastie liked Jed (and vice versa). They all did, so Jed came home with us. He has bonded well with everyone but he absolutely adores Lucy, which means he has plenty of off lead exercise... if he ignores my recall signal (we're getting there slowly) I just call Lucy and he follows her.

Bella

Town: Penarth, Sputh Wales, United Kingdom

Deaf dogs: Bella is a 5 month old Jack Russell Terrier. Bella has been unable to hear since we got her at 6 weeks. She is a very happy little puppy who does not miss out on any normal puppy activities. Our only problem is that she can not be let off her lead. She is an incredibly loving little puppy who likes nothing more than a cwtch! We are considering a vibrating collar when she is older as at the moment she is too tiny .I would be interested if anyone knows where I can try out a vibrating collar or get a sponsor for one A deaf dog is the most precious thing in the world.
Human companions: Sophie Williams and Mother
Other pets: A Tortoise
