Texas Deaf Dogs

<< Back to TX map
Town: Lubbock, Texas
Deaf dog: Kiera is a 2 year old Border Collie. Kiera was a pup that a friend of mine told me about that her friend had found and was looking to place her in a home... Kiera was a merle to merle breeding result pup as she has the "starburst" eyes. She was given away to someone and later found by another person who knew the person that gave her away to begin with, that is when I stepped in and said that I would take her and give her a good safe home. She has be an angel and I love having her. She is an awesome dog... one of the best I've ever owned :)
Human companions: April
Other pets: between my Boyfriend and I we happily have 6 Dogs, I also have Horses, a couple of Cats, Guinea pigs, a Hedgehog, and a Ferret

Scout

Town: Lubbock, Texas
Deaf dog: Scout is a 9 month old Australian Shepherd. Scout is an amazing little pup. She is probably the happiest dog I have ever known. She was born deaf and partly blind. The vet didn't think she would be able to see at all because of the many physical abnormalities in her eyes, but she gets around just fine. She even caught the toy I threw to her the other day. She misses more than she catches, but she does catch some. We bought her for fifty dollars out of the back of a truck at a feed store, and we didn't realize 'till a couple of days later that she was deaf. I've had a blind dog before but never a deaf
one, so it was a new experience. I was worried if I would be able to deal with a deaf dog, but I looked at deafdogs.org and decided that we would be ok. The first couple of weeks were hard, because I was having to get used to running after her
when she left the room or was getting in trouble. You can't just yell "no". I found that a gentle grab on the scruff of the neck accompanied with a sign for no worked very well. After those first two weeks, working with her was no different than any other puppy. She loves hiking when we go to the mountains and we can even let her off the leash some, because she always keeps us in sight. She is almost an adult now and she is the sweetest little dog I know. She is never aggressive, rarely barks (except in play), and loves every person and animal she's ever met. She is extremely friendly and I hope to use her for therapy when she gets older. Don't be afraid of deaf dogs, they can be wonderful pets.

He has been a joy in my life for 8 years. I also use him in teaching lessons to Deaf children about street saftey. He is wonderful dog and I would love to have another.

Zeus

Town: Amarillo, Texas
Deaf dog: Zeus is a 1 year old Great Dane. Zeus is the best thing that happened to us. Although we love all of our dogs and enjoyed helping out Great Dane and Dalmatian rescues, Zeus really stands out. He is so smart and capitalizes on his other keen senses. He has a terrific, funny, loving personality! I would not change a thing about him. When we adopt more Great Danes, we'll be looking specifically for deaf ones. He's such a blessing!
Human companions: Michael, Carol, Annika & Quinlan Anderson
Other pets: 2 other rescued Great Danes and 1 Dalmatian
