 Savannah
| Town: Houston, Texas
Deaf dog: Savannah is a 1 year old Boxer. We bought Savannah
from a breeder who was in the first litter of her Boxers. There were
two white ones left, we chose Savvy because she had one blue eye,
one brown. After the first two weeks, we noticed she didn't respond
to us nor wake up when we called her name. We have a 5 yr old Boston
Terrier who is her best friend and playmate. She has learned hand
signals for sit, come, and paw and she really is a people pleaser.
She is better behaved than our Boston! We just love her to death,
she makes us laugh with all her funny faces and makes our lives happier.

Deaf dog: Emanon is a 2 year old Pitbull Dalmatian mix. My
new puppy dog is a sweetheart. She loves humans and we are working
on loving the other dogs in the house. As long as we are outside
or at Petsmart she loves other animals. Unfortunately, we have a
dominance war going on right now. I knew she was deaf when I got
her. She was a sweet baby and was going to be put down at a shelter.
She is happy and a quick learner! We are both learning to communicate
effectively! :)

Deaf dog: Pumpkin is a 2 year old "Heinz 57". Pumpkin's
mother was a stray, and had a litter of 11 puppies in an empty
lot. The mother and puppies were picked up by the pound, and placed
in a foster home. Unfortunately, while at the pound the puppies
were exposed to distemper. Little Pumpkin was a fighter, though,
and survived this terrible disease. However,
Pumpkin has a hearing disability. I do not know the extent of her
hearing loss, but am planning to have her BAER tested. I welcome
any suggestions for helping her to lead a fun life where she can
communicate with her human family members.

Marlee
|
Town: Houston, Texas
Deaf dog: Marlee is a 5 year old Poodle Mix (Possible Bichon?).
I discovered her at the Houston SPCA. As soon as I met her, she
started bounding around and playing with me, and lovingly greeted
every volunteer that walked into the room. I couldn't resist!!!
I don't know her history, but I can only assume that she was born
deaf. She came to me pretty much housebroken and with excellent
habits (except for begging for food at all times)!!! She's been
a total joy to have. Marlee loves all people, and is it a bit sketchy
with dogs bigger than her due to a bad incident at the dog park,
but we're working on that. I've been trying to teach her hand signals,
but essentially where we've gotten is "ooh, there's a treat...
better put my butt on the floor!"

not stand to have her head touched, but
now she will lay her head in your lap when whe wants a massage.

from my Daughter, it was the Mother's first litter and she ended

make it. The c-section cost $1000, that is how he got his name,
Grover Cleveland is on the $1000 bill. Grover is now 3 months old
and we just recently discovered he is deaf. He lives here with older
half-brother, Duck a 1 1/2 yr old Pit. They are both great dogs

my second deaf dog and I wouldn't trade her for the world! I rescued
Sugar from a home where she was very malnourished, and was very
excluded from her brothers and sisters, she was the runt, if they
could only see her now! She has a wonderful personality, she watches
TV with me, she never really leaves my side. About 1 month ago she
began smiling, she rasies the corners of her mouth into a smile
as if she is trying to imitate me!

Town: Baytown, Texas
Deaf dog: Spot is a 3 year old Dalmatian. n January of 2006,
I decided I wanted a 3rd dog, but not just any dog, a dog that REALLY
needed me, so I went down to the local animal control and looked
around. The first dog I noticed was the Dalmatian. I thought, someone
will for sure want him. So I continued to look for the ugliest dog
in the worst shape, one that not many people would want to put too
much money or time into. So I found about 3 dogs I was interested
in. Oddly enough the 3 I picked were still in their holding period
for their owner to reclaim and weren't going to be adoptable for
about 3 more days. After hearing that I asked about the Dalmatian.
I was told that he had been there over 2 weeks and that he was deaf
and he was on his way to be euthanized the following Wednesday.
On that note I decided to take a look at him. I have to admit I
was skeptical about owning a deaf dog just because I was not familiar
with owning a deaf dog. I took him out of his kennel and walked
around with him and squatted down to get eye level with him and
he turned his head and just started to give me kisses. At that point
I knew I had to have him. Nearly a year and a 1/2 later, we are
all still one big happy family. He listens better than my dogs that
can hear. He is so funny, he has been sleeping with my husband and
I since day one. He sleeps right between us, usually between the
covers. He is very ornery, when he is eating, out of nowhere he
puts his paw in his bowl and just tips over his food and then wants
you to pick it up! When he is ready to play he throws his paw on
the coffee table and then gets down in his stance, front paws down
and butt up in the air. I LOVE my Spotty Boy, deaf and all. I wouldn't
want him any other way

Mischief |
Town: Houston, Texas
Deaf dog: Mischief is a 6-1/2 year old Dalmatian. "I received
Mischief five years ago and have never looked back. The people that
gave her to me forgot to tell me she was deaf, they actually said
she had selective hearing!!! She's lived through a litter of pups,
eight in all, they had her bred before giving her away. Mischief now
lives with another male hearing dalmatian, 1-1/2 years old, and most
of the time, you'd think she was the young one. She's a wonderful
dog, I'm sure I'll always have one in my life."

Maestro |
Town: Houston, Texas
Deaf dog: Maestro's owner writes: "A volunteer for a rescue
shelter saw me with Beamer after I had gotten his nails clipped at
pet store. She told me of puppy dane that was deaf and needed home
or he would be destroyed. I called the shelter as soon as Beamer and
I got back home then went to see Maestro; I was in tears because I
couldn't fathom someone abandoning a deaf puppy. I knew if I went
I could not resist getting another Great Dane. And, Maestro is now
one of the "boys" in my family."
Rhonda has since found out that Maestro is a Catahoula Leopard Dog.

he was deaf and even talked about putting him down. I took him in
without hesitation. He is the most wonderful, loving dog. He is very
smart and learns signs quickly. He loves to play with his toys and
my other dog, Honey. Baxter keeps Honey young. He is a little clown.
I have never seen a dog with such an expressive face and personality.
He loves to sleep under the covers by my feet. He is friendly to everyone.

Mini
|
Town: Beaumont,Texas
Deaf dog: Mini is a 5 month old Dachshund. "It was a shock
to us when we learned our new puppy was deaf. We both cried when
we realized she would never hear her name. However, we have learned
to communicate with her and we know we were meant to have her. She
has two older sisters that also love her. I guess the thing I want
to say is that although it's hard work sometimes, it is worth it.
She is smart, lovable and very much loved by our whole family."
Update: Mini is now six years old.
She is still a great dog. She has one sister left, our beloved chi
chi died last year. soon we will be looking for a new sister for

Mango |
Town: League City, Texas
Deaf dog: Mango's human pal writes: "Mango is now 5 years old.
We rescued him from the shelter when he was 9 months old. The attendants
there did not know he was deaf. While I was deciding to take him home,
I noticed he did not respond to sound, only touch. Fortunately, he
got along with my other two hearing boxers and that was it. Alot has
changed for him these past 5 years, a new house, new city & 2
new human children. He has learned to 'play well' with the small children
- or run away when he sees them aiming for him! He only barks when
he is tired of playing outside and when those pesky Unicorns pass
by. He learns more and more every day, especially by the other dogs.
This week they are working on a digging expedition to China. We will
let you know if they make it!" He is a sweet boy and we are glad he
is a part of our family

Dixie |
Town: Houston, Texas
Deaf dog: Dixie's human pal writes: "Dixie was the last in
her litter and I couldn't pass her up because she was so beautiful,
I had never seen an all white Jack Russell before with no spots. When
I would come home from work I noticed that she wasn't up waiting for
me at the door. I took her to the vet and found out that she was deaf,
my vet referred me to Texas A & M Univ. Vet School to have Dixie's
ears checked out to see if surgery could fix the problem. After the
tests were ran we found out that her ear canals were under developed
and she would never be able to hear. My Dixie girl is a character,
she loves baths and she eats anything (especially pickles). I bought
another Jack Russell named Daisy to help Dixie out, it is alot easier
to have a hearing dog around the house because your deaf dog watches
the hearing one and follows everything. "

Destany |
Town: Houston, Texas
Deaf dog: Destany came to me through a rescue at 3 1/2 months
old. I chose her because she was a deaf Great Dane (I work with special
needs children and decided to adopt a special needs dog) and because
of her beautiful blue eyes! She has only been with me 2 1/2 weeks,
and we have been battling kennel cough and an anaphelactic alergic
reaction so we haven't had much time to really begin our training
due to health issues.
