Popper
Town: Coppell, Texas
Deaf dog: Popper is a 5 month old Great Dane. I discovered Popper is deaf one day soon after we brought him home when I opened the squeaky back door to let him in (he was facing away from me) and he didn't even turn around after I called him. I touched his back and he jumped because I startled him. He's always been a little shy around new people and we've had to work a LOT to get him socialized at the park and even do a lot of mock Vet visits to get him used to the office. He's coming along nicely, but only knows a couple of signs so far. I'd be interested in working with someone who has successfully trained their deaf dog with signs. We can be seen at the Whiterock Lake dog park most weekends or at the Coppell park during the week if anyone wants to play!
Human companions: Andy, Christi, Jacob (3) and Emily (2)
Other pets: Java the Boston Terrier and Bridget the Chihuahua (both hearing)

Town: Bedford, Texas
Deaf dog: Harley is a 1 year old Boxer. Harley was born by my other boxer, a flashy fawn and white girl named Jordan. Harley actually was one of two white boxers born from Jordan's litter, however Harley is the only one that is deaf. She was originally purchased by my mom, whom after six months or so, realized she wasn't getting the proper care and attention, we brought her back in with open arms. In the eight months or so we have had her, my fiance and I have just fallen in love. She is extremely well-behaved and potty trained thanks to my mom. She follows her mom all over the yard and house, as well as her 'boyfriend' Rambo-an eight month old Gotti blue Pit Bull. They are totally smitten for each other. If I can give a deaf dog owner any advice, it is to be patient. They are special animals who need patient, special owners. I can proudly say I own a awesome deaf dog. =)
Human companions: Melissa (mom) and Chris (dad), roommates Carson and Damo
Other pets: Jordan, fawn boxer and Rambo, Gotti blue pit

Town: Cooper, Texas
Deaf dog: Ghost is a 1 year old white American Bulldog and a very big super sweet dog. He was dropped off in the country by our home. We found out by trial and error that he cound'nt hear very well, or maybe not at all. We are saving money for a Vet visit. We have 4 other foundlings all hearing. One, a 13 year old German Sheperd is a little hard of hearing or is ignoring us because she can. Anyway we have been using some hand signals with all dogs since they got here. Hand signals are such a calmer way of communicating than yelling or more. We almost didn't keep ghost because we live in the country and the other dogs are trained to stay in the yard. {unless something has infringed in their territory} anyway we are keeping him because he has such a good disposition.
Human companions: Chantelle Brinkley
Other pets: Dogs: Sonia, Sike and Mabeline. Cats: Jacks, Maxey and Sabastien, all trained to be indoors

Town: Kaufman, Texas
Deaf dog: Diesel is an 8 wek old Black Labrador. My little Diesel was given to me by a co-worker. Her daughter found him sitting on a very busy highway. They gave him to me two days later because I love all dogs no matter what their little obstacles may be. He was quiet, shy, and I
believed he was sick when he first came to me. Later that same night I discovered he wasn't sick, he was deaf. He is absolutly wonderful. He has these beautiful eyes that uses to tell you what he wants or needs. Life may not have been good to him early in his life but he has had nothing less than the royal treatment from his new family. We love you Diesel.

Zeannie

Town: Denton, Texas
Deaf dog: Zeannie is a 2 year old Fox Terrier. I got her from Waco, Texas, they were about to put her and her sister to sleep because they were unable to find them a home. My best friend and I decided to adopt them. My dog, Zeannie is very loveable, fun, smart, and happy. I felt a connection to her from the first time I met her. Zeannie likes to go hiking, riding in the car and playing with kids. We basically do everything together including road trips! She is my best friend; I would do anything for her. I never thought a deaf dog would make a wonderful pet!
Human companions: Lisa Dang

Patches

Town: Dallas, Texas
Deaf dog: Patches is a 6 month old Boxer. We adopted Patches from a local Boxer rescue. She was born deaf and almost was destroyed by the breeder, thank goodness for the rescue group being there to save her. I chose her because her picture stole my heart. I did research and learned that they could do everything that hearing dogs could. She is amazing. She knows basic obedience. She loves to chase the ball and naturally brings it to me everytime. She is a cuddler and very sweet. There are many advantages to having a deaf dog. You can vacuum your house without them waking up..they don't scare in thunderstorms. They are more perceptive and attentive. I love my girl Patches!
Human companions: Stefanie Gaines, Christy and Dylan (3 yrs.)
Other pets: Jake (Shepherd mix, 13 yrs.) and Harley (cat) 6 yrs.

Adicus

Town: Plano, Texas
Deaf dog: Adicus is a 3 year old Boxer. I got Adicus just a few months ago from an owner that did not have the time for him. I got him for free, but had to treat him for heartworms and get him neutered. So technically he wasn't free at all, but he was and is well worth the price. I'm still working on training him and debating on whether or not to purchase a vibrating collar. I am nearly fluent in Sign Language though, so he knows some signs. Adicus is a pure-bred Boxer, and is all about romping around and having fun. His energy is limitless! He gets along with everyone and is just happy to get attention of any sort. I'm really posting him on here to maybe get some tips from other Deaf Boxer owners. Hope it works!
Human companions: Lauren Jochetz
Other pets: Two cats, Tabbytha and Rebecca, and a Chihuahua named Dixie.

Town: Boyd, Texas
Deaf dog: We got Elsa as an abanded pup on HW 114. Someone picked her up and put a her photo in a local cafe as needing a home. We gave her that home 15 years ago. With her great attitude and kind dispostion, she has encouraged many of our friends to get a mixed breed from shelters. After her long life on the ranch her age has resulted in her loss of hearing. It has not, however, created any problems for her. She still owns the couch and ignores me just like she did when she was hearing. "Geriatric" is not in her understanding, except for her long naps. We will continue to take good care of Elsa and she will continue to generously grace our lives with her good nature. It's been a privilege to have been her companion for so many years.
Human companions: Sue King, husband, children and grandchildren

Camera shy Town: Dennison, Texas
Deaf dog: Rootie Tootie is eleven this year. 'The Root' is at his job daily; digging up gophers, hunting for rats, barking at the big crows, and chasing the pigeons out of the barn. He is still competing in Veteran JRTRacing, and still having his moments in the winners circle, with the Championship, or Res. Champion of the show. He is competing in an age group that is 6yrs and up. Pretty good for an older dog! His other favorite sport is ball toss, he is always in the ribbons in that game, also. Rootie is the owner of All balls, chewies and whatever spot he choses to be on the bed from the other 'hearing' JRTs that he lives with here.
Rootie goes to several dog charity events a year to help educate the public on the perils and pleasures of owning a JRT. He, also, is proof that a non-hearing dog is capable of being a wonderful pet. Rootie is an ambassador for JRT Rescue. Last year he competed in the Incredible Dog Challege in JRT racing, he was introduced as a rescue and deaf competitor. He did very well and the crowd roared for him. They were amazed at his ability responding to hand signals. Many in the crowd were waving at Rootie instead of voicing a 'hello', he would wiggle and flag is tail for them in response.
He surely has been a gift from God, teaching me more about dogs then any hearing dogs, that I have owned. I believe that Mr. Rootie Tootie and I will be together until the Master calls, for either of us. He will always be in my heart, with his spirit, way after he may be gone.

Town: Arlington, Texas
Deaf dog: Scope is a 1yr old Lab/Bull Terrier Mix. Her owner writes: We were foster parents through a local rescue organization. Scope came to us because she was considered too hyper and unresponsive to people. We fell in love with this "Problem Child" and adopted her, when most everyone had given up hope. After several months we realized that she is deaf. She is extremely intelligent, and can hear sounds, however according to our vet her auditory nerve is not functional, so she is unable to process the sounds she hears to identify their source or content. She picks up queues visually, through vibrations, from us, and from her hearing sister, Madison. Scope is learning signs, much faster than her hearing sister who we are also training. She is a much calmer, happier dog since we discovered that she isn't being stubborn, she just cannot hear. We love her to death, and cannot imagine what our life would be like without our Scope-a-Rope!
Human companions: Melissa and Crystal
Other pets: Madison
Other comments: This is a great organization and really helped me when I was trying to learn why my baby was not listening to me.

Town: Lewisville, Texas
Deaf dog: Bruzer is a 6-1/2 month old Chihuahua. "We rescued Bruzer from the Plano Animal Shelter in July. He was found wandering the streets at 3 months old he was so tiny. We didn't think anything was wrong with him in the beginning but then after a while we noticed he would not respond to noises and wasn't afraid of the vacuum. We love him very much, he is a very big part of the family. We have a mini Schnauzer also - she must know that he is deaf because when I can't find Bruzer she goes and gets him. When she finds him she barks and nudges him with her nose and then he follows her to me."
