Sissy
Town: Old Hickory, Tennessee
Deaf dog: Sissy is a 5 month old Old English Sheepdog Mix. A friend of mine adopted Sissy when she was 15 weeks from Jackson TN Humane, but her dogs didn't take to having a new dog around. So I "babysat" Sissy for a few days until my friend could take her back to the shelter. She took her back on Friday evening so that she could return her early Saturday morning. I cried from the time I returned her, until my sons finally said, "Mom if you love her that much, then lets just go get her!" I had recently had major spinal surgery so, this was no easy task! But my 18 year old drove me to Jackson Humane. They were great, they had no application from me, just a frantic phone call asking them to stay open and hold Sissy until I got there!! They called my vet for approval and waited for me. Sissy is a very, very, special girl! Everyone that meets her says she has an amazing temperament. She loves all people and all dogs, and doesn't mind the cats (we have 4 rescues!), but just wishes that our youngest boy kitty, Buddy, would play with her!! Sissy has had a lot of illnesses to deal with, but she's a trooper. She has had every intestinal parasite known to man! LOL ! She's had giardia, ringworm and has just been diagnosed with demodex (hereditary) Mange. We are treating with Advantage Multi. We are feeding her a very high qualitly diet to boost her immune
system and help fight it off! I am working with a trainer to teach her necessary obedience signs, and we've come up with a few of our own. She learns easily, as long as treats are involved! I haven't quite been able to get her to pay attention to me when I don't have a treat. We are going to begin vibration collar training at the next session. This will be for recall only and never, never a correction! She is never allowed off leash, which makes things a little tough sometimes, because she wants to run! She has been the easiest dog in the world to potty train! She is a puppy though and chews everything she gets a hold of. I'm sure this will quiet down soon.! ....?! LOL All in all she's is absolutely the best and I think her deafness actually has made our bond closer! In many way having a deaf dog is much easier believe it or not. She doesn't spook or bark at noises, she sleeps through noises and me doing the laundry (her crate is in the laundry room!). Although, I would like to know what others have experienced. The only thing I wish she would do more is just come and lay with me. Maybe this will come as she settles down from puppyhood!
Human companion: Stephanie, my two Sons 16 and 18, my Husband

Town: Sevierville, Tennessee
Deaf dog: Mia is a 1 year old mixed breed, colored white with black spots and a pink face. She was given to me as a Christmas Gift 2006. She is the brightest little dog, she loves to run and jump. Being deaf does not slow her down.

Town: Mt. Juliet, Tennessee
Deaf dog: Zoe is an 8 week old Beagle mix. A friend of mine called one day and begged me to take the last of 7 puppies that she had found dumped on her doorstep earlier in the week. Although we have 4 dogs already, we reluctantly agreed and told her that we'd take the puppy off her hands and if she didn't fit in with us, we'd find someone to take her. Well, 1 month later Zoe is still with us. She's absolutely adorable! The problem is that she's deaf. At first, we thought she was just too little to really "listen" to us, but it's obvious that she cannot hear. The vet tested her and sure enough she's not responding to sounds. To wake her in the mornings, I have to literally touch her to get her to stir.
Human companion: Robyn Taylor
Other pets: Goliath and Mahiah, german shepherds; Rocky, beagle, and Drexel, corgi mix.

Kobi

Town: Lebanon, Tennessee
Deaf dog: Kobi is a 9 year old Jack Russell Terrier. "I purchased her at 6 weeks of age from a breeder who failed to disclose that she was born as part of the 7th litter of a bitch who was over aged and confined to a pen. More than likely, this contributed to her being born deaf. I worked hard to get her to open up to her silent world. Kobi's other senses kicked in at age 3. She is SO smart. A simple hand gesture speaks volumes to her. She has me wrapped around her little paw forever. I can only say that I love this little dog as I would a child of my own. She consistantly gives us unconditional love.
Human companion: Ken Oberg
Other pets: 4 cats: Rascal, Spud, Naboo and Smokey Joe.

Town: Waynesboro, Tennessee
Deaf dog: Trixie is a 4 year old Feist. my late husband purchased Trixie for a companion for our first dog "Tubby". after about 1 week I realized she was deaf. Her mother is a state grand champion squirrel dog. After a vet visit to confirm her deafness and was also diagnosed with hereditary red mange, my husband lost interest and pleaded with me to give her away. I couldn't. thanks to the internet I learned alot. She is the love of my life and the smartest dog I'll ever know. She is truly a blessing.

Deaf dog: Blue is a 3 year old hound mix. Blue greets me at the door each day when I get home from work by jumping four feet off the ground! He loves to carry a teddy around the house in his mouth, but never tears it apart! He follows me from room to room and wants to sleep on top of me! I look forward to many years together!

Town: Knoxville Tennessee
Deaf dog: Tilda is a three month old Pit Bill who my husband and I found while driving down the road one day. She had slipped out of a fence, when
we took her up to the door the people said it wasn't their dog and to take her with us, and that is how Tilda came to our home. We didn't know she
was deaf at first but once we realized we knew she was a special gift to our family. Tilda is the perfect dog for our family with two children most
puppies would go crazy listening to their screaming, but Tilda just sits peacefully :)I have never seen a sweeter puppy!!!

Camera Shy
Town: Harrison, Tennessee
Deaf dogs: Petie & Rascal
Petie is an 11 year old female Boxer. "Petie was one of six white boxers born in a litter of thirteen puppies. They were going to be killed when they were born. The vet that I worked for talked the people into letting me take the whites. I raised them on a bottle and found homes for them. I kept Petie. Her deafness is not a disability for her. I have never owned a better natured dog. She is very intellegent. She watches the body languages of my BTs and will follow their lead. She does know signs for eat, outside, come etc. I am very lucky to have the pleasure of Petie as a companion and friend."
Rascal is a 5 year old female Boxer. "Rascal was twelve weeks old when I got her. She came from the same people as my other deaf boxer Petie. They are total opposites. Rascal lives up to her name. She was very aggressive at play when she came to live with me. She played rough and was hard to manage. She learned very quickly that manners got her more rewards than rough play. She loves attention, the more the better. Rascal is also very sweet and loving."
Human companions: Cynthia Wortman
Other pets: 14 other rescued dogs. Several have disabilities, including two BTs with birth defects.

Floyd
Floyd
Town: Woodbury, Tennessee
Deaf dog: Floyd is a 4 year old American Pit Bull Terrier. "Floyd, aka Pink Floyd, came from the temporary love between Mattie Grunt and Redneck. He is an 80 lb bundle of... I had his mama for 13 years, Floyd came from her last litter. We kept him because he was deaf, and of course, all white. Mattie Grunt looked after him like he was a puppy, cleaning and grooming him, until she died, when Floyd was 3. She knew he was special. He is a good dog, he never chewed up the house, and was the easiest dog I ever house broke. He has never been vicious, even when awakened from sleep suddenly. Floyd is slightly obsessive compulsive, when he sees a shadow, or a laser light. He will stare at the ground, drooling for hours, waiting for his "sighting" to come back. When he sees it, he'll pounce like a cat, trying to catch it."
Human companions: Debbie Kronnick, Alana, 8, and Mike, 6.

Camera Shy
Town: Knoxville, Tennessee
Deaf dog: Barley was born hearing but a series of serious ear infections has taken its toll on her ears. Despite that, I still sing to her every morning and talk to her every evening. My biggest frustration is getting her attention now. Even at 10 she is still willing to learn and has learned various hand and other signals

Camera Shy
Town: Springfield, Tennessee
Deaf dogs: Lillie is a wonderful, sweet Catahoula. I rescued her Mom when she was only days away from delivering a litter. Much to my surprise, the puppies are pure-bred Catahoulas, too. There were 10 puppies in the litter. I put them on the Internet and all but 3 were adopted. I kept Lillie and 2 of her brothers, Bandit and Blue. Lillie is also blind. Such a sweet angel has come into my life. Blue was one of 10 puppies I rescued from the local animal shelter. I put them on the internet and all but Blue, Lillie and Bandit were adopted. I have kept them and he has a sister that is also deaf and blind. Angels truly do wear fur.

Mac
Mac
Town: Knoxville, Tennessee
Deaf dog: "I knew Mac was deaf when I got him. I've been an obedience training instructor for eleven years. While I have helped people trained their deaf dogs, I have never lived with one. He is a total joy. He watches every move that my son and I make. He loves to play and totally loves my 85 lb Golden Retriever, Henry. We have only had him for two weeks but are amazed at how smart and how much fun he is!"
UPDATE:Mac has learned the Sit, Stay and Come hand signals. Also he has learned No, Toy, Potty, Food, Run(for play), and Good Boy! I'm hoping by next spring to show him in agility. I have just started introducing him to the equipment. I just had to write to let you know how proud we are of him! He has been so much fun and makes us laugh every day! Also: We have added a 17 year old cat to our family. Her owner was going to a nursing home, so we took her in. Her name is Annie. Mac adores her and drives her crazy trying to lick her on the nose!
Human companions: "Trent is my eleven year old son. He loves for Mac to sit in his lap while he plays Playstation."
Other pets: Golden Retriever Henry
Email: Askins1111@aol.com

Camera Shy
Town: Etheridge, Tennessee
Deaf dog: "Fostered then adopted. We are begining cart training - two lessons and he is doing well. If it ever stops raining in TN, we will continue. Monte is all the wonderful things I have read on the message board about deaf dogs, so I wanted another. He has apparently no sense of smell."
Camera Shy
Deaf dog 2: "New to me this week, she came through rescue because one vet was knowledgeable enough to persuade the owner to go rescue rather than shelter, so the pup would have a chance to be adopted. I foster Pyrs, and was called by her first foster mom for advice on this one because of my experience owning another deaf Pyr and teaching deaf children. Heidi can be wakened with scents of "good things" passed by her nose. "
Human companions: Barbara and husband
Other pets: Bichon, Havanese, and Pyr, 3 cats, and numerous foster Pyrs (changing population), 3 outdoor cats (due to allergies)
Email: PyrPrairie@aol.com

Moot
Moot
Town: Riceville, Tennessee
Deaf dog: Moot's human pal writes:"Moot's previous owner gave him up because he persisted in playing so roughly with her new toy poodle that the poor thing required stitches twice. Oddly enough, he is/was very gentle with cats and with dogs his size or larger. He sounded like the perfect dog for us-- housebroken, trained with signs, debarked, up-to-date on all shots-- My husband agreed when he dropped by the shelter where I volunteer and saw him. Moot came home with us that night. We've had him two weeks and couldn't be happier. He's the best dog we've ever owned, the most obedient and among the smartest. He's devoted without being clingy and he sleeps by my bed every night and acts as my fuzzy alarm clock every morning."
Human companions: Tess and family
Other pets: Lily (deaf cat), CeCe (cat), Slinky and Spud (ferrets)
Email: melt60@bellsouth.net

Camera Shy
Town: Nashville, Tennessee
Deaf dog: Harley is an American Pit Bull Terrier. His human pal writes: "Harley is an extremely loving dog who has the manners of a perfect gentleman. I have to look Harley in the eyes to communicate with him, so when he knows that he has done something wrong he turns his head and refuses to look at me. This playful stubborness usually makes me laugh and forget what he did to get into trouble in the first place."
Human companions: Megan and Ray
Other pets: Seven, an American Pit Bull Terrier. 4 years old; Eve, a silver tabby cat
Email: Megan@costcontrol.com

Camera Shy
Town: Camden, Tennessee
Deaf dog: Angus is a teacup poodle. His human pal writes: Angus is full of life and full of himself, afraid of nothing. He loves to be very close to his humans and his "brother" Pomeranian Rusty. Angus came from a breeder in Alabama. We got him in trade for our two 1 year old shelties. We will be taking both pups with us as we become full-time RV'ers in the fall. We just found out yesterday that he is deaf, but would not trade him for another, because he is such a little character.
Human companions: Theresa, Troy, and family
Other pets: Rust, a Pomeranian and Seba, a tortoise shell kitty
