Town: Vermillion, South
Dakota
Deaf dog: Bo is a 1 year old Australian Shepherd mix. Bo is
a great dog that I think didn't find his calling in life until he
met me and my other two dogs, Jewels and Millie. He's been a great
friend that seems to be learning hand signs and following the pack.
He's one in a million!
Human companions: Nick
Other pets: 2 dogs, 3 fish

Codie
|
Town: Rapid City, South Dakota
Deaf dog: Codie is a 1-1/2 year old Australian Shepherd.
"My daughter wanted a dog of her own so we went to the local
animal shelter. This is where the adventure of Codie began. The
shelter let us know this was not his first visit there. He had been
left there at 4 months old with a note around his neck saying I'm
deaf. He was adopted out and returned 2 months later to the shelter.
Being such a cute red merle Aussie pup, who could resist him? It
was a little trying at first since he was a shadow hopper. He has
been with us for 1 year now. We have overcome the shadow hopping
and now he chooses a toy to run with and pound on the. He's our
special puppy. My daughter suffers from serve depression. She and
Codie help each other to overcome the big hills in life. They both
are doing great!"
Human companions: Fay Payne and her daughter Christy
Other pets: 3 dogs, 2 cats, and 2 parrots.

Town: Wall, South Dakota
Deaf dogs: Cheetah and Tiny are 5 and 9 year old Dalmatians.
"My Deaf Dal gals are each 1/2 princess 1/2 tom boy. Cheetah
was rescued from a breeder in San Diego who was keeping her in a closet
until he had time to kill her. Tiny was a pregnant stray. She was
picked up by a rescue in Colorado that had a kill policy for deaf
dogs. Ha! The rescue did not catch on. Another rescuer noticed and
swooped her into their foster care - thank goodness! There is NOTHING
wrong with these two! They are smart, happy, playful angels!"
Q and Mr. Blueberry, 3 year old Australian Shepherd and 2 year
old Australian Shepherd/Samoyed mix. "My Aussie boys! What a
couple of goofs! 'Q' will herd anything, anytime (me to the lawnmower,
cats... Oh how he longs for sheep!). Mr. Bluberry, who is also blind
in one eye, prefers to focus on keeping swallows from flying to close.
Of course with no depth perception "too close" is relative. Both came
to me through the Humane Society of the Black Hills in Rapid City,
SD."
Human companions: Nola Lee and her 18 year old son, who was
raised with deaf dogs and now has one of his own.
Other pets: A hearing Dal, Trouble age 7; a Great Pyrenees,
Sam age 2; a Golden Retriever, Dusty age 5 - also from BH Humane Society;
2 weird cats with issues; and the occasional herpetofauna.

Captain Jack |
Town: Box Elder, South
Dakota
Deaf dog: Captain Jack is a 3 year old Boxer. "Jack came
to me as a rescue, mistreated and labelled as "unmanageable". In the
first week I fostered him, he learned 10 hand signals, how to walk
on a leash, and became a regular couch potato! He is amazing; smart,
attentive, quick to learn, loyal, and NOT unmanageable. I adopted
him after fostering him for 3 months! There is a misconception that
a deaf dog is a burden or difficult. They are just as easy as hearing
dogs."
Human companions: DeeAnn, Mike, Mac and Mitch McKeithan
Other pets: Reese, hearing Boxer; Tuffi, Miniature Schnauzer;
Cocoa, Siamese cat.

Deaf dog: Orion is a 4 month old Boxer. "I got Orion as

as a playmate. They play well together. He also plays with my girlfriend's
two children."
Human companions: Chris Scott, his girlfriend Erica and her
children, Ahlana, 3, and Micheal, 2.
Other pets: Kodi, a Newfoundland; and 3 cats - Cat, Gray, and
