Oz
Town: Sumter, South Carolina
Deaf dog: Oz is a 1 year old American Pit Bull Terrier. I got Oz, his sister Millie and his brother Ollie when they were 7 days
old. Their Mom and the rest of the litter got killed by another dog so I took the puppies in. I found out when Oz was about 2 months old that he was deaf. After much training and work I think him and I have got it. He is a joy to the family and I
call him My "flower child". Oz being deaf does not stop him at all and I am very proud of him. Stay strong fellow dogs lovers!!
Human companions: Ziggie
Other pets: Too many to name

Jack

Town: Taylors, South Carolina
Deaf dog: Jack is a 6 month old mix. We adopted Jack from a rescue group when he was 3 months old. He was turned over to the rescue group by a woman who witnessed him thrown from a moving car. The only evidence of this abuse is a scar on one side of his mouth. It certainly has not harmed his spirit or trust in humans. Jack is the happiest dog! He loves everybody including other dogs and cats. He is full of life and love. He lives to play. We are working on our training and signs. It has been trying at times because Jack is so "busy" it is difficult to get his attention, however, I have no doubt he will master any challenge put before him. He is such an intelligent, loving dog.
Human companions: Sandra
Other pets: Cats and Dogs

Simon

Town: Greenville, South Carolina
Deaf dog: Simon is a 4 year old Pit Bull. "He is a wonderful dog. My husband and I have become a foster home for children and he could not be more gentle and sweet to the kids. It's almost like he knows that they need extra love from him. Simon was feared by the girls and their social workers because he is a Pit Bull, but once they got to know how sweet he was that all changed. He is an amazing dog who I love so very much. He has opened my eyes to the world of silence and the world of Pit Bulls.
Human companions: Richard, Shannon, Stephanie, and Wendy.
Other pets: Kimber and Sabrina, 2 little mixed breeds and our newest addition Amy. We also have 2 cats Wicked & Amber.

Gretchen

Town: Simpsonville, South Carolina
Deaf dog: Gretchen is a 1 and 1/2 year old Beagle + ?. She is a blue eyed beagle and perhaps Australian Shepherd or Herding dog mix. She was rescued by a group out of North Augusta. At the time she had 5 puppies and they all were very ill with a respitory infection. They were discovered at a pound in rabies quarantine as Gretchen's first owner gave her up for biting someone and breaking skin. The rescuers begged to take her from the shelter; she was in a cage too small to stand in and littered with filthy newspaper for her and the puppies' waste. The shelter would not release her initially but persistance won out. Gretchen and her pups went into foster care, recovered and healed. I found her on Petfinder where her picture haunted me. The funny thing is, Gretchen's foster mommy had NO idea she is deaf. Gretchen is so amazingly well behaved and intelligent. She takes her cues from the other dogs and from body and expression reading. Heck, it took us 11 weeks to figure it out! She is exceedingly loving, fun and sweet.
Human companions: Ruth and Robert McDonough
Other pets: Molly a 12 year old pocket beagle and boss; Duncan a 7 year old beagle with some basset for flavor.

Town: Greenville, South Carolina
Deaf dog: Princess is a 1 year old Chihuahua. I had been wanting a Chihuahua for a while. I had settled on getting one for Chirstmas 2006. In the mean time I was asking around to see if anyone knew of some Chihuahua's for sale or maybe even free ones, and then I received a call from a friend that Princess, a 1 year old, white female was available but she was deaf. I went to see her the next day and she was so sweet and loving and I brought her home
and she is the apple of our eyes!!! It's really hard to believe she's deaf because she understands so well, She is an amazing little dog and I am so glad I didnt pass her up because she was deaf!
Human companions: Tammy Ann, Husband Greg and sons, Chase/14, Payton/4
Other pets: Red Dog/an outside guard dog

Town: Lansdale, South Carolina
Deaf dog: Rhett is a 6 year old Boston Terrier. His family says "Rhett was found at a kennel, days before he was to be put to sleep. Because he was deaf and hyper the people at the kennel assumed that no one would want him. Rhett was 10 months old and had spent most of his life in a cage. When I got him he had no trust in humans. He would cower in a corner if any one approached him. I know that he had been abused at some point because he would snapped at anyone who didn't slowly go up to him and pet him on his back (no other area could be touched). I am amazed at how different he is now, with complete trust in people."
Human companions: Jennifer Wiley
Other pets: Uncle Fester (Lab mix), Scarlett and Grinch (Boston Terriers)

Town: Orangeburg, South Carolina
Deaf dog: Dollie is an 8 month old Jack Russell Terrier. "We found Dollie while looking for a new Jack Russell puppy for my daughter. At a breeders, we saw her and wanted her, but we were told she was deaf and was going to be put down because she could not be bred. She was beautiful and it was love at first sight, but the breeder would not let us buy her. Begged the breeder not to have her put to sleep. We wanted her and said we would have her spayed - anything... Two weeks later, we called the breeder back and asked if they still had her, they said yes. Again, we said we wanted her. In the meantime, we had found another six-week old Jack Russell puppy, but we still wanted Dollie, too. The breeder was reluctant, but called us back after a few days and said we could have Dollie!! We were so excited. We immediately drove 40 miles to pick her up. At first, she was very rough with the smaller puppy, but very soon she was gentle while at the same time very playful. She is absolutely beautiful - inside and out. We love her so much."

Ditto
Ditto
Town: Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
Deaf dog: Ditto is a 9 year old Dalmatian. "Ditto is an extremely sweet-natured dog. After being together nine years we are able to understand each other with minimal communication. I tell people, who upon learning she's deaf tend to feel unnecessary pity for Ditto, that she sleeps better than the rest of us in the family! Then they understand that everything has a bright side! Ditto is a very happy dog."
Human companions: Carla, Chad and baby Golden

Camera Shy
Town: Columbia, South Carolina
Deaf dog: Anna is a 4+ year old Dalmatian. "A local rescue found her as a stray. They learned she was deaf and advertised as such. We only had 4 dogs at that time. This overly friendly and attentive dog had been spoiled and had no doggy social skills. In her case, she definitely needed a home with firm adherence to doggy dominance. Thought I'd made a BIG mistake the first two weeks, but she quickly learned sign and her intelligence was channeled into acceptable activities. She is very eager and probably tied as the smartest dog I've ever had - apologies to my border collie!"
Human companions: Lauren Lambert and her husband
Other pets: 9 other dogs

Sophie Marie
Sophie Marie
Town: Bluffton, South Carolina
Deaf dog: Sophie Marie is a 2 year old Chow/Lab mix. "Sophie was adopted from the Hilton Head Humane Association in March 2001 when she was about 5 months old. Nobody at the shelter, nor myself, thought there was anything different about Sophie when I adopted her. After having her for a few weeks, she still wouldn't come when I called her and she still seemed very aloof about things in general. I knew something was different about her, but I didn't know what it was. Then, a friend asked me if Sophie was really 6 months old, since she really acted immature for her age. Then it hit me!! Sophie was deaf! A BAER test, performed by Dr. Johnson in Orange Park, confirmed total deafness in both ears. I hired a private trainer and she gave Sophie and me a couple of lessons in doggie sign language. Within a week Sophie was coming when I called her, sitting, and laying down. I started agility lessons with her, and she loves it! Sophie is also a licensed therapy dog and goes to visit nursing homes and hospitals. She loves all other dogs (except her sister Summer at feeding time), and people and children of all shapes, sizes, gender, and ages. "
