We have also have a Lab and Maine Coon cat as well. They get along and also mess around together. We have only had her since the first of April 2008. She loves the long walks we do everyday and also goes to work we me. She is getting better, but has a long ways to go. Thanks for reading this and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rudy Boi Cooper

Gracee Bee Good

Town: Del City, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Rudy Boi Cooper is a 1 year old Daschund. Rudy came from Antlers, OK I saw him on line and did not know he was deaf at first, after I contacted the breeder she told me he was deaf. I already had Gracee so what was 1 more deaf dog!! Rudy is full of life, very active and likes to annoy the rest of the dogs. Rudy is a dapple which seems to be a problem in breeding.

Gracee Bee Good came to me because the only two left in the litter were her and her sister. Didn't want to split them up so I have both. Gracee is the sweetest most mild mannered dog I have ever had. She never meets anyone she doesn't like and thinks everyone is here for her. They originally told me she was deaf because she had so much white on her but she is a Double Dapple and apparently Dapple have problems with deafness.

Human companions: Jan Beeler
Other pets: 3 other dashchunds, Lillee (Gracee's sister), Hannah 5 years and Buffy 16+ years.

Presley

Town: Tulsa, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Presley is a 4 year old Pit bull?/ definitely some Lab. He is the sweetest animal on earth! My parents live on a farm. Their neighbor got Presley from a truck bed outside the local Walmart parking lot. When he started eating their chickens and they realized he was deaf, they no longer wanted him. They were going to have him "put out of his misery". When we stepped in and said we would take him. He has a "sister", Ellie. She's a blue heeler mix about his same age who was dumped on my parents land. She's his ears. She wakes him at breakfast time and gets him when we come home from work. Together they make quite a pair!
Human companions: Kate and Jordan
Other pets: Ellie, blue heeler mix, and Bucket, our beautiful, old and cranky cat

Town: Mannford, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Casper is a 3 year old Boxer. We got Casper when he was 10 months old. He was not wanted any more. Only a few days after we got him he had a Guinea Pig, a Cockateel, and two Hamsters for lunch. We then knew we were in for a long ride. He now is ok in the house. He loves to go out and make new friends. Casper's best friend and pain in his side is Cinnamon a Chihuahua that thinks a 5 pound dog is bigger then a 75 pound dog.
Human companions: Bob Kuningas, Wife, 8 kids and 3 grandkids
Other pets: Suzy a 9 year old Boxer mix, Vanilla a 3 year old Chihuahua and Cinnamon, a 3 year old male Chihuahua

Molly

Town: Norman, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Molly is a 4 month old Bulldog. Molly was given to us at 9 weeks by a friend who was having a difficult pregnancy and couldn't manage taking care of a puppy. It took us a couple of weeks to decide for sure, but it became very apparent Molly couldn't hear us. She's just the sweetest dog, and even with her ornery streak, is so laid back and fun. She's very quickly picked up hand signals, and knows about ten already. She loves every person and dog she meets, and her stubby little tail just wags like crazy. I hope that she can become a therapy dog, because everyone who sees her has to smile.
Human companions: Crystal and Steve Caruthers

Patience

Town: Blanchard/Bridgecreek, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Patience is a 5 year old Pointer/Dalmatian mix. I found her on the Pets and People website, in the special needs section. She was 18 months old and had spent her whole life at the shelter. She was adopted out several times only to be brought back within days. She was deemed unadoptable and untrainable. The first thing we taught her was how to ring a bird bell when she wanted to go outside. She had a great willingness to learn, but nobody ever took the time to teach her. Once she started learning, it became easy. Her gentle nature inspired us to see if we could get her certified as a therapy dog. She finished first in her class, and now works for Good Shepard Hospice, Grace Living Center and the Oklahoma Foundation for the Disabled and does a home visit to people that can't get out. I taught her a lot, she taught me even more.

Update 11/14/07: Patience was recently invited and attended The Victory Junction Gang Camp in Level Cross N.C., for a 3 day camp with deaf and blind children and their families. Victory Junction is the largest, most indepth and best Childrens Camp in the world. It was founded by Richard and Kyle Petty Family in honor of there son and grandson Adam. It was an honor to be invited and was an honor to attend. The little dog nobody wanted brought hundreds of smiles.

Little Bit

Town: Yukon, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Little Bit is a 4 and 1/2 month old Great Pyrenees. Little Bit came to us from a friend of my husband. We had traveled to SE Oklahoma to visit with him when we discovered he had the litter of pups. We had no initial intentions of bringing a puppy home, but once we saw this little bundle of fur, our hearts were taken. As one of the runts of the litter, he was 4.4 lbs at 8 weeks. Little Bit's favorite trick, so far, is to guess which hand the treat is in. He is currently in puppy training and advancing well. He receives many compliments on his temperment and current abilities. I am very interested in additional training and hope that one day he can be a therapy dog.
Human companions: Debra, Trent, Matthew, & Ryan Brakefield
Other pets: Chelsea (the cat), Ginger (the Chinese Pug)

Baby
Baby JereLee

Tommy Girl
Tommy Girl

Town: Claremore, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Baby JereLee, a female Dalmatian mix puppy, and Tommy Girl, a four year old Dalmatian. Baby is fond of covering her eyes with her paws so she doesnt have to view the signs. Particularly the 'no' and 'stay' signs. She's really cute when she does this, and her family has to try very hard not to laugh and encourage her. Tommy Girl is a treasure. Her only flaw seems to be her wanting to jump on people and lavish them with affection. Her mom took her to the nursing home she works, and Tommy Girl spent several hours there, enjoying the company of the residents. She'll make a wonderful therapy dog once she's trained not to jump!
Human companions: Michelle (aka Angel) Heber, Rob, Stephanie, and David
Other pets: goldfish

Camera Shy
Town: Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Madame Marie Curie is a 3 year old Dalmatian. Curie is fascinated by birds. She will race across the yard to leap 6-7 feet in the air to catch the bird. She will use the fence as a backboard to get higher. Bubbles are even more fun to chase. We got Curie as a little puppy. I knew she was deaf within an hour of having her at home. Shalom thinks she should be able to herd Curie when she is chasing bubbles and birds. Curies gets really mad, but with a 40 lb. difference in size; Shalom always wins.
Human companions: Marcia Bridgewater, son Rob, daughter Rachel
Other pets: Shalom is Rob's 97 lb. lap dog Rottweiler, Sadie Rose is Rachel's 65 lb. Shepard/Chow mix, and Betsy Ross (I own the house) is a Calico cat.

Camera Shy

Town: Ponca City, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Matlin is an 8-10 week old Border Collie. "We just rescued Matlin this morning, in response to a vet in the Osage who had been instructed to euthanize him. He's just a baby but seems to have picked up the obedience signal for "come" already. He is red and white, has a precious smile, and is making friends with our two hearing dogs."
Update 10/16/06: At about one year of age, we rehomed Matlin with a friend who lives in the
country and has plenty of space to run off his inexhaustable energy. He's been
renamed to Jackie (for Jackie Chan, thanks to his incredible agility and energy).
He's happy, healthy, has a pack of friends, and his new owners are making wonderful
progress with communicating with him through sign language.

Pearlie Mae
Pearlie May
Town: Cleveland, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Pearlie May's owner writes: "I was very afraid of dogs (all dogs)but a guy told me he was going to kill this dog if he couldnt get rid of it. She was deaf and he couldnt train her to fight. This broke my heart. I told him to put her in my back yard and I would find a home for her (easier said then done)this was a 1yr old deaf PIT-BULL! No-one would even hear of it. I was even afraid of her but every time I went out to feed and water her, she just looked at me so sweet. After a while she didnt bark at me and just seemed so happy to see me. I liked that she needed me and liked seeing me, so she was slowly moved into the house. She practically house-broke herself! (She enjoyed getting the treats after) She also learned to sit, come to me, and "no". Even though I was still a little scared, she didnt care. She went every where I did. She even goes out with me! She just loves everyone! I dont know what I would do with out her. I have a ton of stories about her. She has had her share of problems allergies, chewing things, jumping on the counter, and I soon found out she was pregnant (long story). But I'd love to help anyone with anything I can. Just email me, if only to hear Pearl's stories!!

Deaf dog: Zoe is a 1-1/2 year old Dalmatian. "Zoe is a rescued Dal from Rocky Spot Dalmatian Rescue. We started out fostering her, but I knew within a day I HAD to keep her. She is SO SMART. She learned the sign for "off the furniture" within a week. She knows the sign for "bed", "go to bed", "outside" and we're still working "where's your bone"."

Camera Shy
Town: Ponca City, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Rocky Blue is an approximately 1-1/2 year old Australian Shepherd. "My 7 year-old son Ricky wanted an Australian Shepherd and I told him that I would get him one, little did I know that it would be a deaf Australian Shepherd. I did not know Rocky Blue was deaf when I picked him up from the pound but it didn't take me but a couple of hours to figure it out. His coat is white with a little brown on the ears and tail. He has warm blue eyes, a beautiful smile and is very gentle and well mannered. My son and Rocky Blue are true friends, inseparable. "
Human companions: Janice Tabor and son Ricky Burt, who is hearing impaired.

Camera Shy
Town: Sallisaw, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Skinner's Lil' Sampson is a 5 month old Rottweiler. "We adopted Sampson thru a private surrender. The breeders didn't want him and couldn't sell him. He has approx. 75-80% hearing loss. He is one of the biggest, loving, sweetest, things I've ever seen. We have a hearing Rottweiler and we've found that he'll watch her to see what she's doing - especially when treats are being handed out! He is so laid back and has a sweet disposition. We want to get him into therapy work when he gets older. We took him to fireworks the 4th. He was content to set back and watch the pretty things in the sky and to watch people. We're trying to socialize him and get him used to being around people. When we take him for walks, no pulling...it's like he knows to stay close to us and he's so very watchful of us."
Human companions: Kathy Skinner, David, Emily and Betty.
Other pets: Baby Girl, 3 yr. old hearing Rottweiler; and cats Jazzy and Oogie.

He is brown with the black muzzle and with on his chest and some on his paws. "
Human companions: Dana, Bob, and 2 grown children.

Ripley
Ripley
Town: Sapulpa, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Ripley's human pal writes: "Ripley was hit by a car and has a badly broken leg and a pulled hip, the people that owned her left her at the vets to be put down because of the expense. I raise Boxers, so everyone at the vets office knew i was a sucker for dogs, they called and we went to see her... and we were sunk. She has blue eyes and loves everyone. She has her leg in a cast and is doing fine.. we have just found out that she is deaf, and don't know if it was because of the trauma of being hit or if she was born that way. The other dogs lead the way in everything, so it was hard to tell at first.. I would love to hear from anyone to help me teach her signs. I have no idea how to work with her. I would have taken Ripley even if we had known she was deaf when we rescued.. but I want to give her the best life possible.. there is still a chance that she could lose her leg if it doesn't heal, it has pins and wires and we are crossing our fingers.. THank goodness for this site!"
Human companions: Joann
Other pets: Three boxers, one half dalmation/half black lab, (rescue) one part chihuahua

Jericho
Jericho (special thanks to Mickey Rabeneck for this picture)
Town: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Deaf dog: Jericho is a Color-Headed White Sheltie. He is also a competition performance dog. He earned his CGC at the young age of 5 months, and earned his first Rally-obedience title at the early age of 11 months - earning the title with the highest distinction possible (R1-MCL). In the spring of 2004, he went to his first agility trial, running twice and qualifying both times with a first and a second place. (Update June 2004: he has earned his novice titles in agility, and even has legs in Open) Because Jericho has a little hearing out of one ear, he is considered by the American Kennel Club to have "useful hearing" and can compete in their performance programs. However, I train and run Jericho as if he had no hearing at all. Jericho is an incredibly intelligent dog, and loves to work. His performance future in agility and Rally-obedience looks very bright, and I expect he will earn very high-level titles in both sports over time. He is proof that deaf dogs can compete on an equal footing as their hearing counterparts.
Human companions: Kristin
Other pets: Aslan (Sheltie), Laika (American Eskimo), Samson (cat), Spot (rescued Guinea Pig)
