Zoey

Town: Newark, New York
Deaf dog:
Zoey is a 3 year old Boxer. She was born deaf. Being a white Boxer, the breeder that owned her Mom gave her to Boxer Angels Rescue at 2 days old with her sister. Some breeders do not keep white Boxers. Thankfully, many breeders surrender the 'Whities' to rescues, rather than the alternative. Zoey was raised by 2 wonderful Foster Moms in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania.
She was bottle fed for the first 6 weeks of her life. We adopted her September of 2004 at 9 weeks old and brought her home. Locally, we have a wonderful woman named Joy who works with Agility dogs and has a deaf Border Collie that is an Agility Champion. Joy was kind enough to spend time with us and Zoey. She taught us how to train Zoey with hand signals. It took Zoey 3 signs to learn sit. She learned the signs very quickly. We have taught Zoey standard obedience signs, a few ASL signs and some 'homemade' signs that worked for us. She is a wonderful dog and VERY smart. People that meet her do not know she is deaf unless we tell them. She is a wonderful part of our family.
Human companion: Penny (Mom), Jeff (Dad), Amanda (Human sister age 22 yrs), Bryan (Human
brother age 21 years)
Other pets: Terron - 8 year old Male Boxer (Rescued) Brandy - 11 year old Beagle, Ace - 12 year old Tabby Cat, Naeko - 9 year old Pixie Bob (kitty)

Angel is a 2.5 year old Australian Shepherd. Angel was born deaf as a result of breeding two Merles. Her owner wanted a good home and offered her to us as she knew we loved our dogs and gave them good care. Angel is loving and playful, especially loves her ball. She learned sign

Town: New Rochelle, New York
Deaf dog:
MardiGras is a 1 year old Dalmatian mix. I am a private rescuer for Animal Shelters for mostly in my NY area. In April of 06,a shelter in St. Bernards Parish, LA heard about me and wanted me to take a deaf puppy in to get it out of that area. I agreed knowing that I would temporarly take him in and re-home him as soon as he was able to go. He had been found wandering the streets by himself at 12 weeks of age. After seeing his video on youtube (Saving Isaiah) made up by a volunteer of the shelter, it was my husband who said "this puppy's going no-where!" So after a scare with parvo he arrived with 7 other hearing puppies to a local airport. The 7 lab pups where soon adopted and
MardiGras stayed. He is an affectionate puppy always eager to learn new things. He gets along great with other dogs, cats, rabbits and even the turtles. He moved right in and we have had no issues with him other than checking on what is on the counters.
Human companion: Bill & Tina
Other pets: 12 cats,4 dogs,2 turtles,1 rabbit and 1 fish

Winston

Town: New Paltz, New York
Deaf dog:
Winston is a 7 year old Amstaff. He lived at Dutchess County SPCA for a very long time before I adopted him. He was well cared for, taken to obedience classes, etc. while he waited for
just the right home. I have continued his training with the support and encouragement of his "fan club" at the shelter. He is a gem, has adapted well to household life, and is extremely eager to please. He doesn't get along well with other dogs, so I can't arrange "play dates", but we are working on that slowly and carefully.
Human companion: Laura Wells, Margaret (16) calls Winston her little brother!

Dakota

Sky

Town: Port Washington, New York
Deaf dog:
Dakota is a 2 and 1/2 year old Australian Shepherd. Dakota is a rescue dog from upstate New York. She was born deaf and visually impaired from merle to merle breeding. She knows hand signals and will be learning standard ASL soon. Dakota is almost able to pass the Canine Good Citizen test and she has almost completed her therapy dog training. Dakota is the best! :)

Sky is a 2 and 1/2 year old Border Collie. Sky is a Blue Merle Border Collie (possibly with some Australian shepherd in him as well). He is from Georgia where his breeder locked him and two of his deaf littermates in a back room for the first year of their lives (all because he was embarrassed that they were all born deaf!). As a result of this kind of neglect, Sky is undersocialized and fearful/aggressive, but he has improved his social skills somewhat. Sky is learning American Sign Language and how to be a normal dog.

Human companion: Kinberly Mockler
Other pets: Hearing dog named Mochaccino (he knows American Sign Language) and Betta fish

Luna

Town: Brooklyn, New York
Deaf dog:
Luna is 4 month old Pitbull terrier/ Dalmatian? My boyfriend and I adopted Luna from the Northshore Animal League in Long Island, NY. We didn't know she was deaf when we got her. It slowly became more and more obvious to us. She is extremely bright, and responded immediately and correctly to the "sit" hand sign, and the "come here" hand sign, but would never come when I called her name or squeaked her favorite toy. Then we started testing her hearing, and it became very clear she could not hear anything. She can not hear dog whistles either. She is only 4 months old, and therefore acts like the baby puppy she is a lot of the time, running around a lot, and sometimes not paying attention to us, but for the most part we are incredibly impressed and pleased with her sweet disposition, intelligence, and astuteness. We are having a hard time getting her to pee on the wee wee pad, and she pees all over the apartment. However, she is crate trained, and does not pee in her crate. We can't walk her quite yet because she is still too young for her rabies shot. Any training tips or advice are welcome and greatly appreciated. Best wishes and much love to all the deaf dogs and their human companions!!

Skye

Town: Amityville, New York
Deaf dog:
Skye is a 5 year old Pit-Bull/Husky mix. Saw Skye's pic on the DDEAF-DOG adoption website (I was thinking of my deaf cat Zoe while perusing the potential adoptees) and I saw her face. The most beautiful and earnest eyes I have ever seen! She went from a Manhatten shelter to Husky House NYC rescue to a foster kennel in Queens. Lucky for me all those folks saw the wonderful dog, not the handicap. Truly, she is not handicapped, as she "listens" better to me than my hearing dog! Skye shares her life with another dog and two other cats - one also deaf like her. Skye knows lots of signs and people constantly ask me if I'm "sure" that she's deaf (like this would be something she would fake - duh!). I can't imagine life without Skye and I encourage all people to give it a try - as these dogs have so much to offer!
Human companion: Dorothy and Ralph Libby

Hoku

Quinn

Town: Lawrence, New York
Deaf dog: Hoku is a 3 yr old Australian Shepherd. Her pedigree is Houma, LA. I saw her picture on the DDEAF adoption pages and fell in love. I flew to New Orleans and brought her back to New York. Having recently adopted a merle Aussie (refusing even to think about a solid),and then having learned about merle to merle breeding by people who wanted more merles because they were easier to sell, I decided to make up for my ignorance and adopt a deaf dog as penance. Instead of penance, she has been the light of my life. I have learned more about communicating with dogs (and people) from her than I could ever have learned otherwise. And as a result of having Hoku, I became really involved in deaf dog rescue, leading to helping to save even more deaf dogs.

Quinn is a 3 yr old Australian Shepherd. He was in an Indiana shelter, where he was becoming more and more fear aggressive. Finally, there were only two volunteers who could even get near him. I was working with them via internet helping them learn sign language to try to communicate with him, thinking that if he could communicate with people, he would be less fearful and aggressive. Alas, it didn't work. They were going to put him down, but I asked that they send him to me. He actually is a foster dog for CODA. I have been doing behavior modification with him, and he is getting better little by little. He still has some problems "outside", but is the sweetest, most obedient, most lovable dog with my hubby and me.

She also has a big golden retriever sister that she uses as her "hearing ear" dog. She watches Penny closely for cues on going outside and if any food is being given out. Chloe lived with my parents until my father's death last year. She was very shy becuse she was very confined with them. They were afraid to let her out because of her deafness. Since coming here she is an entirely different dog. She is overcoming her fear of strangers. Even though she is deaf she has NEVER snapped at anyone. Anyone thinking of adopting a deaf dog should not be afraid. They can be wonderful pets.

Deaf dog: Jessie doesn't have any honors except having brought a lot of love and patience to this house. She watches everything and is very protective and loyal to her family. That is honor enough for us. Jessie has proved very adept at learning sign language and responds to a number of requests.
Mister Lucky Man is unilaterally deaf. He was purchased as a hearing ear dog for Jessie. He was born 14 hours after his littermates and found out on the lawn in his sack and he survived but as he has gotten older we found that he is mildly retarded, probably due to lack of oxygen. Still his wonderful disposition makes up for his learning disabilities. Thanks for reading about them.

Deaf dogs: Hannah & Niki
Hannah was rescued from a breeder who planned to put her and her deaf sister to sleep as they were not sellable. Hannah's sister was adopted by deaf friends. Hannah is a very smart, sweet girl. She understands many ASL signs and loves to chase the lawnmower when she's on her extensive tie out. She is excellent with children but watches over her family carefully. We love her a great deal!
Niki an Australian Shepherd that is 1 year 11 months. Niki is still learning ASL but has adapted nicely to our home after being kept in a small laundry room by people who did not have the time to spend with her. Niki loves to go on walks, herd her family, and run on an extensive tie out in the backyard. She also loves tunneling under snow. Niki is extremely affectionate and docile. We have never heard her growl and she loves to be with people all the time. She follows me from room to room. If she sense someone is sick, she will stay by their side watching over them until she sense they feel better. She also must have at least a paw on a person's lap, leg, or arm at all times as if to secure them from getting away from her attention. She is truly a sweet, sweet dog who is very trusting and intelligent.

Town: Potsdam, New York
Deaf dog: Babe a English Shepherd was dumped at the animal shelter with a litter of 6 puppies when she was 2(?). I began competing in UKC Obedience with her thinking she was a mixed breed until everyone told me she was an English
Shepherd (& she looks just like the pictures). She has her CGC, U-CD & 2
legs toward her ASCA-CD. I have only realized in the last six months
that she is almost completely deaf & her vision is a little fuzzy. We
still do Obedience classes (she would be heartbroken if she was left out)
& I want to start working with a laser pointer to replace the clicker
she was trained with. I don't see any reason why she can't compete in
Open since that's all facing me, but I don't see how she could do

Deaf dog 1: Miss Macy is a Jack Russell Terrier that is 1.5 years young. Miss Macy came to us as a foster-pup when she was 11 months old... this poor baby had been in 7 homes by that time. After yet 1 more adoption that didn't work out, we decided that we couldn't let her go through that trauma again and kept her. She has been a delightful addition to our family. She rivals Miss Maggie-Mae's babysitting skills and is often seen herding the Great Danes out in the back garden.

Miss Annie is a Great Dane that 6 months young. Miss Annie is the latest addition to our doggy family. Byron
Byron
Town: East Bethany, New York
Deaf dog: Byron was adopted as a stray from my county shelter. They, nor I, had any idea he was hearing impaired at that time. It was several months after he came to live with me that I realized that he was just more "indifferent" than all the other Chows I have had in the last 30 years! They are noted for their subborness and "selective hearing", so he hid his hearing loss well. It was not until I joined the Deaf Dogs Yahoo! Group and found this site that I was able to use the test to confirm my suspicions. Byron is a loving, sweet guy....not much of a watchdog tho! Watches everyone intently and is in tune to their hand movements. As a Chow, he is a very patient, intelligent dog by nature...calm & a real thinker. His lack of hearing is not in the least an obstacle in his - or my life.

Patches
Patches
Town: Bronx, New York
Deaf dog: Patches is a Chiuahuah/Poodle Mix that is 1 1/2 years old. Patches is the most fun loving dog I have ever met. I miss him during the day when I am at work and look forward to getting home and having him jump all over me. I got him from my boyfriend's sister who had to get rid of him because the building she lives in only allows 1 dog and she had 6. The only title Patches holds right now is the one for winning my heart.
Human companions:
I have 2 children: daughter is 14 and son is 12.

Satchel
Town: Averill Park, New York
Deaf dog: We adopted Satchel, a 3yo boxer who is bilaterally deaf, from
Boxer Angels Rescue - we were a little leary of adopting a deaf dog but
we haven't had any regrets. Satchel passed his basic obedience with
flying colors and is going to be starting agility next week. He responds
to standard obedience signals as well as several ASL signs - his
favorite is "I Love You!" His favorite hobbies are counter surfing,
tormenting Snorty, our old Boston terrier, into playing with him, and going for
walks!

Deaf dog: Gin a Pit Bull Terrier was a stray, wondering the local city streets, when someone turned her in to the SPCA. We've had her for only 4 or 5 weeks. She's so sweet and gentle, if you could bottle her attitude you could sell it for artificial sweetener. She sleeps in our bed, pressing up against me all night. She's trying hard to learn our household routine. I'm so glad we brought her home.

Mr. Charlie
Town: Cicero, New York
Deaf dog: We bought Mr. Charlie a English Bulldog from a breeder in FL. He came to us at 9 weeks old. It took just 3 days to figure out our little baby is deaf. Our response...so what?! :) Mr. Charlie is the sweetest, most attentive pup I have ever known! He is learning VERY fast (knows signs for " sit", "down", "come" and "good boy!" in just 2 weeks)...he also knows the sign for "roll-over"..but his rolly-poly body only allows him to make it 1/2 way! heh ;) He is simply the best!

Deaf dog: Rocky a 9 month old Aussie Blue Heeleis our new puppy. We found him at a local mall pet store when he was 2 and a half months old. We always vowed we would never buy from a puppy mill type place. In fact all of our animals in the past have found us. But we visited the store for my niece to just hold a kitten for fun. I saw this funny puppy that was so unlike the rest, just as adorable as could be but a bit on the odd looking side. He didn't look as though he belonged in there with all the other pretty puppies. I had never seen a cattle dog before but there was something very special about him. He just sat and stared out with his head on his paw. He even looked a little sick, clogged nose, tired eyes. I held him & couldn't leave without him, I immediately said I'll buy him. I've never paid for a dog in my life & neither has my husband so it was really weird how it happened. We did not know until a couple weeks later that something was not quite right. We sensed that he might be deaf. We had a BAER test done & found that he was in fact deaf. We are unsure as to whether his deafness occurred at birth or weeks later. We were refunded our money from the pet store because of his deafness. Now nearly seven months later he is so wonderful and fun and well behaved that it's difficult to tell that he's deaf. He's our boy and life would not be the same without him. We adore him. Recently I am starting to look into contacting other deaf dog owners to give us some insight on his behavior. He's very obedient and happy but at night he seems to be a bit freaked out. So I'm writing this in hopes that someone might have similar issues and possible solutions. Thanks. Lisa

Deaf dog: Princess a 4 yr old English Setter was from a breeder who thought deaf dogs could not be trained. Our family wanted a deaf. We heard about her and had to save her. She is so loving and great will all children and all animals. She cuddles with our cats and our parrot in a very loving way. Like a deaf child she will look away if she does not like what you are signing to her. She is the best dog anyone could have. Princess also has severe hip dysplasia. Kida

Tenchi

Town: Pine Plains, New York
Deaf dog: We got Kida from a breeder in MO after Zephyr, blind/deaf
aussie, had to be PTS. We were looking for another deaf aussie, and she
happened to fit everything we were looking for, albeit a bit smaller than
expected. :)

Kida is a little double red merle, but all 10# of her is aussie! She
loves kids especially, and is the ruler of our "5 pack" of dogs. :)
Kida goes to obedience classes occasionally and I'm hoping to at least
get her CGC and UKC-CD in the future. She is a major fetchaholic and a
packrat. ANYTHING not nailed down will be brought to me and either
dropped at my feet, or worse, on my lap!

Deaf Dog 2: Tenchi is my first great dane, but my third deafie. Aussies
are my main love, but he's conviced me that I'll always need a dane in my
life! ;) As of now Tenchi is a 7mo Harliquin, who is 30" at the
shoulder and about 105#.

We got Tenchi from a byb and also fostered his two deaf sisters for
awhile. The girls, Washu and Ryoko, went on to Denise, Finnean's mom, and
then on the Deaf Dane Rescue with Marc in OR.

Tenchi is one of the most laid back dogs I've known and I'd love to do
therapy work with him. My goal is also to get his CGC and UKC-CD when
he's a bit older. Everyone who meets him can't help falling in love
with his amiacable personality! He loves playing with Kida and is
starting to learn what the whole "fetch" thing is about. I'm sure he'll have
it down pat pretty soon! :)
Human companions: The human members of our family are Jay-my SO, Tori-6.5yr
daughter and Spencer-almost 4yr son.
Other Pets: Well there's Mojo-7.5yr red tri aussie, Faust-5yr black & tan

Jacob
Town: Woodside, New York
Deaf dog: Jacob is a sweet deaf Dalmatian, who already knows about 14 or 15 hand signs. We adopted him from the Willing Hearts Dalmatian Rescue at 7 weeks and he's been a handful ever since! Every night we take him to the local dog park, to which about 15 or 20 dogs usually come, and he plays with his friends for an hour or two. He doesn't seem to know he's any different and we don't think his friends do, either! We also have two cats, whom he deals with well (despite the occassional chase). He's wonderfully socialized in every way, and we all think people who say deaf dogs are difficult are nuts!

Lady Blue
Town: Schenectady, New York
Deaf dog: Lady Blue is a 2 1/2 yrs old Blue Merle Sheltie. Lady is almost totally blind and deaf. She does hear some very loud, sharp noises, but not our voices. She is also blind - her iris in both eyes is split (looks like 2 cat eyes in 1 marble). The split lets too much light to her brain and she doesn't see anything but shadow (and our feet). She has learned to recognize us by the smell of our feet & shoes. We stomp our feet to get her attention or call her in from the porch. She is 1 of 3 from a litter of 10 born this way. The other 2 died soon after birth. The owner was going to have her destroyed when I came along. Lady's parents are both blue merle shelties and the vet said there is a high chance of deaf / blind dogs from mating 2 b.m.s. But we love her - have since we first laid eyes on her and still do. She is paper trained - so she plays outside w/her side kick, Benji - our dashound and then comes in the house to pee & poop.
Human companions: 2 humans
Other Pets: Benji, our dashound and about 100 birds (we are bird breeders).

Uppy
Upsalamba

Town: Brooklyn, New York
Deaf dog: Upsalamba (Up!) is a 6 month old Tibetan Terrier. I bought my dog from a breeder on January 19, 2004. The dog's grandfather was a champion Tibetan Terrier. I wanted to give the dog a Tibetan name, but couldn't find one that I liked. Decided on Upsalamba, a funny word which I discovered in a book called Readiing Lolita in Tehran. It's a made-up word which could mean anything, but I take it to mean "up from adversity." It's actually a good name for her, as she is very upbeat and certainly hyper. Also, she can jump as high as a four foot countertop.

I did not know that Up was deaf when we picked her up. She started screaming in the car on the way home. The screams were so strange that I began to suspect that something was wrong with her. As soon as she arrived home, I observed that she did not respond to sound. I tried a few tests and realized that she was deaf, however, I had to prove it. This Tuesday, she had the BAER hearing test and was diagnosed as deaf in both ears.

She is a princess. Beautiful - white with gold spots. She's very gentlle and playful and an ace at agility in her puppy classes. She was very nervous and lonely the first few months away from her dog family, but she is calming down and enjoying her life in her new home. She especially enjoys chasing the cats. I find communicating with a deaf dog very interesting and challenging.

If anyone who reads this has a deaf TT, I would love to hear from him or her.
Human companions: Family of one. Grown daughter, a granddaughter, a son-in-law, a partner all living elsewhere.
Other Pets: 7 cats

Cali
Cali
Town: Painted Post, New York
Deaf dog: Cali is an Australian Shepherd that is 1 year old. Cali was dumped at a shelter in upstate NY because her owners were tired of her being deaf. She is one of the most lovable and enjoyable dogs I have ever owned. She is wonderful with people and other dogs. She is also listed on the lethal white website. I had always wanted an Aussie and my friend that works at the shelter called me and asked me if I wanted to foster her. Well... the foster thing lasted about 1 minute after I met her. Since then I have learned a whole new appreciation for the hearing impaired.
