 Shadow |
Town: Henderson, Nevada
Deaf dog: Shadow is a 12 year old Aussie. Shadow is my miracle
Aussie! Petsmart was her last chance at life. I ran in
just to buy dog food. This white, funny looking, 5 month old puppy
was up for adoption. Her nose was bright pink like a pig's snout.
It was love at first sight. The shelter volunteer told me she was
born totally deaf but it was my vet that pointed out her eye deformities
and insisted she see a veterinary opthamologist. He said "there's
a reason they put these dogs down when they're born". Her prognosis
wasn't good and I left his office in tears. But Shadow's life has
been a celebration! She was house trained in one week and gave my
8 year old German Shepherd a second puppyhood. Shadow learned to walk
by my side off-leash, sit at the curb and not go into the street.
Despite her limited vision, she responds to over 15 hand signs. She
became a Registered Therapy Dog (TDI) 10 years ago. Yes, Shadow is
now 12 years old still healthy and strong! We have logged over 1,000
visits to nursing homes and hospitals. She has encouraged kids to
read, comforted the dying and their families, helped stroke victims
recover, and made depressed patients laugh. Shadow brightens everyone's
day. My life has been forever enriched by a deaf dog.

Harvey
|
Town: Las Vegas, Nevada
Deaf dog: Harvey is a 2 year old Havanese. My little pup
Harvey is such a sweetheart! I flew out of state to pick him up
and after I got him home I realized that he was deaf. I decided
to keep him, even though I knew it would be a challenge to communicate
with him at first. He is very smart and knows more signs than I
can count! We are always learning new ways to communicate with each
other. Harvey loves to cuddle, but also plays, barks, and acts like
any other dog. often times I even forget that he is deaf! I can't
imagine my life without him!

Deaf dog: Hamlet is a 4 month old Lab Mix. His family says
'We picked up the puppy as a stray and thought his not paying attention
to us was just "puppyness" but my mom got us thinking about it and
we used a bunch of sounds to see if he would respond but nothing so
we have been working with him since I already knew some of the ASL
previously. He's so cute that we just learned to deal with it very
quickly.'

Town: Goldfield, Nevada
Deaf dog: "New Girl is a three year old Dalmatian. I have a
third deaf Dalmatian, Pongo.I have a small rock and coin shop in the
desert 186 miles north of Las Vegas. I used to teach school, but decided
it was better to be happy and broke. I live in the high desert and
metal detect and get rocks to sell. The dogs love to run in the desert
and once or twice have been lost for a week or two but I find them
or they eventually come home. I saved them because they were going
to be killed. They all sleep in bed with me, until I get a girlfriend,
but this is a small town (220 people, 700 in the county) and I'm 50
and don't want anybody that smokes or drinks, so I'll probably end
up sleeping with Dalmatians. But I love them like kids. I spend hours
playing with and messing with them all day. I'd like to hear from
anyone." writes Big Bob.

Town: Battle Mountain,
Nevada
Deaf dog: Happy is a 7 month old Border Collie Mix. She came
from a local pound when she was not quite three months old. I met
her previous owners, by accident, two hours after I adopted her. She
had been hit by a car, had major surgery on a back leg (and a pin
placed in it), she then 'ran away' from home and was on the streets
for at least a week before the pound picked her up. My friends say
I should have called her "Lucky"!
Human companions: Kimberly Conley
Other pets: 2 cats, Cleo and Fat Henry -- Happy learns behaviors
from them all the time.

wanted a companion for our JRT and found an ad in the paper one day
"free to a good home - deaf Jack Russell puppy"... so we called! We

She turned out to be a great pet - easily trained and loads of fun.

Town: Reno, Nevada
Deaf dog: My Ellie is an all white Jack Russell Terrier. She
is very small, smart as a whip and the love of my life. My son bought
her for me from a local family. I believe she was probably the runt
of the litter because I saw another female Jack that was only a couple
of days older than her and it was heavier and taller than her. Ellie
is so sweet and loving. I am unsure if she is totally or partially
deaf and am beginnig to train her with dog obedience signals.
