Molly
Town: Rio Rancho, New Mexico
Deaf dog: Molly is a 5 month old Old English Sheepdog. She is a real cutie and some days that's all she has going for her, she can be a little imp. She has learned so far, sit, stay, down, up and shake. "Come" has been a little bit of a problem but she is always in a fenced yard. We have a 5 year old hearing OES and Molly takes a lot of clues from him. Would like to talk to other deaf dog owners and share our stories and ideas on training and socializing.
Human companion: John and Irene
Other pets: Rascal, 5 year old OES and Stitch, 4 year old orange Kitty

Ned

Town: Santa Fe, New Mexico
Deaf dog: Ned is a 7 year old Australian shepherd. It rarely occurs to me that Ned is deaf anymore. He makes communication easy by looking intently at me with his beautifully clear blue and brown eyes. He's a lovely little softy who makes happy moany-groany noises when you rub his belly. In June 2006 Ned was diagnosed with a pituitary macroadenoma, a brain tumor. His oncologist said it's unrelated to being a homozygous blue merle. We declined radiation treatment and he's done very well with medication for 10 months, eating well and going for walks, a subdued version of himself. We have no idea how much longer he has but I feel lucky to have had him as long as we have. When the time comes, I won't hesitate to adopt another deaf dog.
Human companion: Laurel and Charles Savino
Other pets: Daisy, a hearing Australian shepherd and eight budgies.

White Rabit

Town: Truth or Consequences, New Mexico
Deaf dog: White Rabit is a 3 and 1/2 year old Miniature Australian Shepherd. He was bred in Idaho from 2 parents both Blue Merle with blue eyes. He was the male runt. there were 5 puppies and 2 were deaf. I paid for a working dog and after 3 days realized he was deaf and I loved him too much to give him up. He is a trickster but great with my grandchildren. I have a 3 year old granddaughter that has autism and he is the most wonderful playmate for her and protector.

Frosty
Frosty and Pyro
Town: Albuquerque, New Mexico
Deaf dog: Frosty is a 3 year old Australian Shepherd. We adopted her from another family, not knowing that she was deaf. She quickly won our hearts with her sweet disposition and seemingly unlimited energy--she'd give the energizer bunny a run for his money! We have trained her with hand signals in a regular "hearing" obedience class for the past few years, and even plan to try out an agility class.
Human companions: Brian & Deborah Ingram
Other pets: Pyro, a hearing German Shepherd

Camera Shy
Town: Farmington, New Mexico
Deaf dog: Molly is a 6 year old Australian Cattle Dog. She is a therapy dog in a middle school special education classroom for students with Behavior Disorders. She has worked with BD students from the time she was 8 weeks old. She works in my roommate's classroom. Molly and my roommate Barb just moved to the middle school where I work. Molly loves her job and the kids. She is ready to go each morning. She keeps a close eye on things and is upset if she can't go. She has an amazing way with students who have behavior problems and adds a calming influence to the class. In fact other teachers visit Molly during the day to receive a touch of TLC!

Camera Shy
Town: Cimerron, New Mexico
Deaf dog: Asher is a 3 year old Australian Cattle Dog. "I found Asher, starving and abandoned at about 5 weeks old. I had him a few more weeks when I discovered he was deaf. Our communication began very naturally. ACD's are so intelligent! He helped to design our methods of talking to each other. He is loyal, obedient, and its his job in life to take care of me. I love ACD's/heelers. I hope to provide more rescues a safe place to be until adopted. Having a deaf ACD is an experience of a lifetime. All future dogs for me will be a rescued, deaf ACD/Heeler. My preference is red, but any color will do!! Most people don't believe he is deaf, he is so attentive to my needs. He reads my mind!"
Human companions: Cheryl Hursh
Other pets: A really cool cat that loves Asher.

Missy Snow
Town: Carlsbad, New Mexico
Deaf dog: Missy's human companion writes: "Little Missy just happened to walk in my home one evening. Of course we all loved her were dog people we already have 6 other dogs. So the next morning we took her to my vet and got here shots and had some things checked out and made a tentative appointment to be spade. Not forgeting the fact that we found her so we put an ad in the paper and checked the past weeks worth of papers, we also checked all the bullitin boards for a lost dog. That evening we took her walking and some passer by's happened to know who the dog belonged to. Saddly we called the owner straight away and found that they lived a short distance away. When we arrived we met her twin brother and found out that she was deaf due to line breeding. Also that she wasn't the mut we thought she was. It turned out that she was a Jack Russel out of Africa cross between a short hair and smooth. Well we went back home and I started crying a little bit and then went to bed. About an hour after we get home we get a phone call the owners of the dog had decided to just give us the dog for free. And that is the story of how she has blessed my family."
Human companions: Casey and Mother Louise, Father Jeff, Boyfriend Jay, Son Kaleb
Other pets: All Dogs, Maxine, Precious, Pickels, Chester, Chip n Dale the Twins
