New Jersey Deaf Dogs

<< Back to US map

Bianca and Sophie
Town: Montclair, New Jersey
Deaf dog: Bianca is an 8 month old Italian Greyhound. I saw Bianca on a breeder site when I was still a bit undecided about adding another IG to my home. She had such an unsuspecting, goofy face. She looked a bit like Olivia The Pig. After reading about the fate of deaf dogs, I just had to have her. She is very attentive, hardly startles and is never aggressive. She is an instigator, friendly and a real scooch. I am so glad she in my family.
Human companions: Molly
Other pets: I have another 2 1/5 year old IG who is hearing, named Sophie
Email: seahorse352@aol.com

Spanky

Town: Hammonton, New Jersey
Deaf dog: Spanky is an 11 week old Boston Terrier. We purchased Spanky from a breeder and had no idea he was deaf until about a week after we got him, as he was not responding to his name. We are starting some sign language commands. He has truly touched our hearts.
Human companions: Brandon (son 5yrs old), Rich (father) Barbara (mother)
Other pets: Puzzle (15 yr old Boston Terrier)
Email: jones1428@comcast.net

Frick

Town: Marlton, New Jersey
Deaf dog: Frick is a 9 week old Boxer. We have a deaf Ferret for the same reason (gene defect with white coloring). We adopted his brother, since the breeders couldn't find a home for Frick, and we have some experience, they asked if we would take him too. We would've on our own, but couldn't afford 2 puppies. They gave him to us for free, knowing he was going to a good home.(I was hoping that would happen!)
Human companion: Jennifer and Kevin
Other pets: Frack (Fricks brother), Mika and Emmy (both Ferrets) and Onyx the deaf Ferret
Email: jennifertomkinson@comcast.net

Stella

Town: Union, New Jersey
Deaf dog: Stella is a 2 year old American Stafforshire Terrier. Stella came to us from a rescue in New York City. She was being used illegally as a breed dog due to her popular coloring (everyone wants a dog that looks like Petey from the Little Rascals); when the owners discovered she was deaf, they sent her to the pound for extermination so she wouldn't pass on the "deficiency" to her puppies. The rescue managed to get her just hours before she was put down.
We had actually contacted the rescue about a different dog, and our contact mentioned that she had a beautiful 2 year old Am Staff that no one would adopt due to her handicap. My sister, Sarah, is legally deaf (meaning she can hear sounds, but not clarity or certain tones, and requires hearing aids), and she's not broken -- how could we say no to at least meeting this pooch? After meeting her once, we were totally in love. Stella, a "double threat" due to her "deficiency" and the bully-breed stigma associated with Am Staffs and Pit Bulls, couldn't find anyone to give her a chance, but she certainly deserved a good home long before we got her -- we're happy we did. She is as sweet as sugar, and loves everyone she meets. She's remarkably good with other dogs, given all she's been through, and has even adopted our neighbor's doxie-puppy as her own (have you ever seen a 45lb, "vicious" breed dog mothering a 6lb dauschund puppy? It's sickeningly cute). Stella is the antithesis of every deaf dog myth -- she doesn't bite when startled, she's taken to training very quickly, she's affectionate and very intuitive.
Human companion: Kimberly Kaye

Petey

Town: Bloomfield, New Jersey
Deaf dog: Petey is a 3 year old Italian Greyhound. We were asked to foster Petey because he was deaf, not house broken and needed obedience skills. We agreed and within 5 min. of having him in our home, we realized that no one would probably want to take the time to teach him the same sign language signs. He completed his obedience class and passed. Within the first month of having him, he passed his therapy dog test. Petey is now a certified Therapy dog and he's also a certified Therapy Dog in Animal Assisted Crisis Responce. He makes visits in a mainstream high school with hearing and deaf students as well as various other facilities. He's a great hit with the students and staff. Deaf dogs make wonderful loving pets. They need owners who will take the time to learn how to communicate with them. When they learn the different signs to communicate with they are so much happier! They thrive on what you teach them and they are so eager to learn.
Human companion: Betty Kish
Other pets: Petey has 4 other dog buddies at home. One other being an Italian Greyhound "Doby". Two Greyhounds, "Sadie" & "Hunter" and a German Shepherd "Jingles". Plus 4 cats.
Email: emk56@msn.com

Human companion: Tracey Armstrong
Other pets: 3 other dogs, 3 cats, an Iguana and a Cockatoo

He graduated from obedience school and is a Canine Good Citizen

Deaf dogs: Orion is a small 4-year-old Dalmatian with very few spots. He's a definite alpha personality, and comes to work with me every day. Nina is a 3-year-old Dalmatian who is everyone's best friend. She acts like she gets no attention at home, and needs to get it from every person she meets. Orion is much more protective and takes a little time to warm up to strangers. They are both wonderful dogs, very friendly, never startle, and are not aggressive in the least!

camera shy Town: Long Branch, New Jersey
Deaf dog: Chelsea was a "throw away" Dalmatian, one of 4 in a litter that was left for adoption. Her litter mates (males) were adopted right away and her time was up. I got the call from a friend and here we are..years and years later. With little help available we muddled thru with our own hand gestures and we communicate fine..neighbors did not know she was deaf because I still talked to her and made gestures at the same time. She is what the vet calls a "hugger": she loves to hug you. Her only fault is that I sheltered her too much which I now know was a mistake. I have to be careful with strangers. She would protect me with her life! Once she gets to know you, she will squeal with glee when she spots you! She also "mumbles" and I swear (and others back me on this) she mumbles "mama! I would highly recommend a deaf dog in a caring home but only if you are serious about taking on this task."
Human companions: Susan Showler
Other pets: One other male dalmatian, Quincy. He was another "throw away"...abused at the age of 2 weeks old. I got him when he was 4 weeks old and bottle fed him, weaned him and loved him. I also have one more "throw away" rabbit that was house kept and then left out in bitter, bittern January snow weather when the owners moved away and abandoned him

Riley
Riley
Town: Wayne, New Jersey
Deaf dog: Riley is Staffordshire Bull Terrier who is now 4 years old and is such a wonderful companion. We purchased Riley from a breeder as a puppy and neither the breeder nor the breeders vet had any clue she was deaf. Riley did very well in obedience training until I had to teach her to come. Riley sat across the room and stare at me with her head half cocked when I called her name. I worked with her over and over again, but she never moved from her spot. The teacher had told me that terriers were a stubborn breed and because she was young it may take some time to train her. I didn't buy it because I had owned a terrier previously and thought they actually trained very quickly. I had a feeling it was more than simple training. A few months had gone by and she didn't seem to be picking up on her name so I decided to stand behind her and clang a set of pots and pans together and she didn't budge. At that point, I realized she was completely and totally deaf. At first, I was sad for her, but then realized what a great full life she can have and how much I will learn from her. Riley is a loving well adjusted dog. Some of the rumors I have heard about deaf dogs are pure nonsense. If you physically touch and handle your dog lovingly as a puppy your dog will grow to trust you and you won't have to worry about your dog getting spooked. Even when we found out our dog was deaf we never treated her differently other than to speak to her with gestures rather than verbally. If you've got the patience, owning a deaf dog can be a rewarding experience.
Human companions: Susan and Walter and their, children Sami, Marissa, and Matthew.
Other Pets: We have a cat, Janey and another dog (puppy) Boston Terrier, Tobias

The original owners from Wall, NJ weren't able to keep SAX, a high-energy Aussie; SAX needed a home and my husband was chosen to receive him. Jeff decided to keep the name SAX even though we could have changed his name to anything at all. For some reason it was right. The first few years SAX was quite the handful. Town: Wantage, New Jersey
Deaf dog: Lassie is an Australian Shepherd
that is 5. My younger brother is hearing impaired and hated using signs because he felt that he was out of place. My mother decided to get him a deaf dog so that he and the rest of the family would become more used to using signs. We found our dog, Lassie, in CT and drove up there to get her. She is quite a character. She is queen of the household... kind of a my-way-or-the highway attitude! She gets along well with other animals... when my cat had kittens, and they would escape into the living room, she liked to take them back to where they belonged or she would take them and lie with them and clean them... very motherly. She's also very protective of the family and the little kittens.

Nipper
Town: Cherry Hill, New Jersey
Deaf dog: While in the process of trying to find just the right boxer for us, my fiance and I were contacted by a nearby breeder who let us know that she had a deaf white boxer puppy for the first time in 18 yrs. We had told her that we had a fenced yard and wanted a companion to take on runs with us. She thought little Nipper would fit right into our lifestyle and she couldn't have been more right. She is just like any other frisky puppy - wrestling with the neighbor's lab, darting around the house and in the last month she has already learned 5 signs for sit, stay, come, good girl and no. She makes us laugh and we love her so much.
