Emily
Town: Norfolk, Nebraska
Deaf dog: Emily is a 2 yr old Dachshund. It took a couple of weeks to realize that she was deaf. I just thought she was naughty. When we finally figured it out, WOW did she ever learn fast or should I say we learned how to teach her. She is the "the cats meow" she is so spoiled. I love to see how wrapped my husband is around Emily's little paw. She gets whatever she wants when he's around. It's so cute. Emily is also just a gem when it comes to children. They can pull on her, lay on her take her toys and she just rolls with it. I am so glad that we found little miss Emily. I don't think that I ever want another hearing dog. DEAF DOGS ROCK!!!!
Human companions: Tracy, hubby and children

Otis

Town: Omaha, Nebraska
Deaf dog: Otis is a 9 month old Bull Terrier. Otis has been deaf since I got him. He is without a doubt the most loving and affectionate dog I have ever come across, and that's saying a lot since I have worked with dogs my whole life (dog groomer, humane society). He is a handful at times and very bullheaded, but he's my guy. His deafness has also been a big part in him having OCD and Anxiety. Those are two other lovely things that I deal with. But having Otie has opened my eyes to a whole new way of thinking and laughing that I never knew existed

Radcliff

Town: Lincoln, Nebraska
Deaf dog: My name is Radcliff. I'm a 3 month old Border Collie/Heeler or Australian Sheperd mix. I was a lost dog that was adopted on July 2nd, 2007 from the Humane Society. I was almost not adopted because dad said to mom "are you sure you don't want a dog that can HEAR?" Mom knew I was special so she's my favorite. While dad can hear, he doesn't listen to her, so I try to do what she signs. I already know come, sit and down. We signed up for puppy classes and I'm going to show everyone that I'm a smart puppy. Dad's not going with us. He said that mom can train him, but I think that could be impossible.

Some people don't think that deaf dogs bark, but I am pretty vocal (like my dad) if I have to go potty and I'm in the car or in the house. I love to chase balls, chew on sticks, run around the yard and play with other puppies. I have two older sisters who are getting used to me. Peg plays with me a little but Sandy couldn't be bothered. Maybe they're jealous because I'm so cute. I know I'll eventually win them over.
Human companions: Janet and Pat Chung
Other Pets: Peg (Shepard mix) and Sandy (Collie mix)

Fuji

Town: DeWitt, Nebraska
Deaf dog: My name is Fuji, I'm a 3 year old mixed Lab/Dalmatian, Pit bull, and Dogo Argentino. I was adopted by my Family on August 7th, 2006. I will tell you about myself although my background may be little vague. I am originally from Florida. A family in Florida adopted me from the animal shelter when I was a puppy. They said I was very small with worms in my stomach and mites in my ears. They sure took good care of me because I am still here. I am not sure how long I was with this family but then a bad situation occurred and they had to let me go. I was with a new family in Georgia but then something else came up and I had to go to another shelter but the Willing Hearts Dalmatian Rescue took me in. When the Scherling family learned about me being up for adoption, they immediately found their way to contact my foster family and now here I am in Nebraska with a brand new family and boy I am so happy to be in a place where I finally can call home and be loved! Of course, when I came here, I became overly protective with my new family because I was so afraid that someone would be coming to take me away again but now I know the Scherling family will never ever let me go. The date of my birth is unknown so they assume that I am three years old, The best part about me is that I am deaf! They have taught me some sign languages with body gestures and I am smart enough to catch on. I love my new family very much!
If anyone is looking for a dog or wanting to adopt one, just check http://www.deafdogs.org. There are tons of dogs that need to be loved!

Town: Omaha, Nebraska
Deaf dog: Nala is a 7 month old Jack Russell Terrier. She is the sweetest dog in the world. She loves everyone and is always happy to see people. We did not know she was deaf when we got her, but it didn't take long to figure it out. She has an older "brother" who is a hearing Papillon. They play so well together and Nala follows him everywhere, watching to see what he does! If he runs downstairs, she's right after him, if he lays at the top of the stairs, she's right beside him. They are best friends! It doesn't matter that Nala is deaf because as far as we are concerned, she is perfect the way she is!
Human companions: Vicki, Steve and Jessica Wilson
Other Pets: .Gizmo - a 2 year old Papillon

Town: Stromsburg, Nebraska
Deaf dog: Tasha is a one year old Australian Shepherd Mix. She was rescued from a shelter and after having her for a day I realized she was deaf. When taken to the vet I was informed she should be put to sleep due to this and I decided to get two more opinions so we now go to a vet in Grand Island which is about an hour from our home. She is a very happy playful dog. She now has another dog to play with. His name is Jack and he is an Alaskan Malamute rescue. Also has two cats to herd around. She is learning fast and is good at ignoring a person when trying to correct for something she has done wrong. Tasha has brought a new meaning into our lives and she is very special. Wish more people would feel that deaf dogs are good.

T-bone

lola

Town: Lincoln, Nebraska
Deaf dog: T-bone is a 4 year old Boston Terrier. We picked him up in Crete, Ne. as a pup. Didn't know he was Deaf. Until we had him for a month. I thought Boston's were the dumbest dogs ever, that 1st month. Well, I was lost when I figured he was Deaf. Thanks to "DDEAF" and the book "Living With A Deaf Dog" I found out, just how smart and great T-bone is. My daughter (Amber) and I are so much closer because of T-bone. Thinking and making up signs, So we can comunicate with each other. It's been a tremendously wonderful and rewarding experience for us. We now went out and rescued Lola.

Lola is a 1 year old Boston Terrier. She is our newest family member. She came from the "Nebraska Boston Terrier Rescue" (NBTR), out of Omaha, NE. Jennifer was surprised, and a little relieved at our only request. That the dog had to be Deaf. Jen had just received an 11 month old female from an Iowa kennel and was worried about finding her a home. Lola also needed a surgery, for Luxating Patella. We adopted her, and got her the surgery. Though a little pricey. We are enjoying the secret joys of having another deaf dog. T-bone loves his new playmate and is helping her learn our language.
Human companions: Paul Furman and teenage daughter Amber

Camera Shy
Town: Pickrell, Nebraska
Deaf dog: Valentine is a 2 year old Great Dane. "My dog came from a home where they decided that she was too big and too deaf to be safe around their soon to be born baby. They were going to put her to sleep because she was not perfect. The truth is, she's perfect just the way she is. Valentine is not too big and her deafness does not hamper her in any way. Valentine loves children and seems to endure their screeching better than any of my other dogs that can hear. She is so smart that she can open any door in my house and the gate. I often feel like I now live in a maximum security prison due to the number of latches, locks, ties, cords, etc. that I use to secure things that she should not open. Valentine has no problems "hearing" because her 5 other doggie friends all help to let her know what exactly is going on. I would definitely adopt another deaf dog in the future."
Human companions: Amber and Jeff McConkey
Other pets: Dagon, Collie; Dalos, Blue Heeler; Gheist, Great Dane; Shub, Great Dane; and Tink, Saint Bernard.
