Deaf dog: Keila is an 8 week old Boxer/Lab mix. Keila's mother
is a white Boxer who is not deaf. Her father is a white Lab, also
not deaf. We were hoping with this background she would not have the
genetic hearing problem, but at this point she appears to be either
severely impaired or totally deaf. I would appreciate any pointers
or advice that anyone would be kind enough to offer

Diablo
|
Town: Nixa, Missouri
Deaf dog:. Me and my boyfriend got a beautiful old Bull Boxer
mix and we named him Diablo. We love him so much!! He loves to bite
especially at his age, he's almost 6 weeks old. We found out he
was deaf about a week ago. Diablo can seriously sleep for 3 hours
easy because he can never hear anyhting to wake him up. He is the
sweetest puppy that I have ever known. We can't wait to start teaching
him sign language!! A lot of people keep asking us why we didn't
give him back to the breeder when we found out he was deaf, and
what people don't understand is that these dogs need a home too!
Just because he's deaf doesn't mean that he shouldn't be loved and
have a family. A lot of people that I have talked to say that deaf
dogs that know signs mind better than most dogs that can hear. We
love him to death and we can't imagine our life without him!!

Emma
|
Town: Springfield, Missouri
Deaf dog: Emma Goldie Wever is a 1 year old Boxer. Emma is
our little doll baby. She is so much a part of our family, I can't
even express it. She is an inside dog and loves to run and play.
She absolutely loves my kids and has to be right in the middle of
everything that's going on. When we go for walks outside, she of
course, has to be on a leash for her own safety. Because she is
deaf, she can't hear traffic or other dangers. She is just as goofy
and playful as other boxers who can hear. We communicate through
sign language and body gestures and she is really into facial expressions.
She pays attention to our faces as much as she does to our gestures.
My sister is the owner of "Joe Boxer" or "Joey"
and I loved Joey when she got him, so Emma found me and we are now
a family. Joey and Max (the lab who is Joey's yard mate) and Emma
play together. Boxers are an awesome breed and the ones that are
deaf are just a little more special.
Human companions: Robyn Wever. My husband, daughter and son
are all just crazy about Emma too.
Other pets: 3 yr old cat, named Storm, our Betta fish named
Zorro, and our outdoor toad named Froggie

Town: Columbia, Missouri
Deaf dog: Lilly Bean Stolle is a 3 year old Jack Russell
Terrier. As is with all JRT's Lilly can be very rotten at times
but also one of the most affectionate and loving animals I have
ever owned. My husband and I got her from my brother and sister
in law who breed JRT's and German Shepards. Lilly was the only one
born deaf in a litter and we took her. The vet wanted to put her
to sleep and we refused. She has won a few awards when she was a
puppy. I would love to meet people in my area that have deaf dogs.
I hear that they are common but I have yet to meet any myself. We
are still training Lilly so anyone that has advice or tips we would
greatly appreciate them!
Human companions: Kate Stolle and husband
Other pets: A German Pointer/Labrador mix. She is one year
old and a handful but she adores Lilly our deaf dog. They are best
buds.

Phog
|
Town: Kansas City, Missouri
Deaf dog: Phog is a 4 month old American Bulldog. Dr. Forest
C. "Phog" Allen is an all-white American Bulldog that
we got from the Lawrence, KS Humane Society. Phog is also a huge
basketball fan and can't wait to watch his beloved University of
Kansas Jayhawks win for the first time this winter. We believe he
was born deaf, but he was very sick when we first got him, and that
may have caused his impairment. He is incredibly playful and smart,
and thus slightly mischievous. We love him so much and are desperately
trying to train him appropriately. Our homemade hand signals are
working well for sit and down, but getting his attention and no
(especially for biting) are difficult for him. We are definitely
open to any suggestions... Oh, and Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!!
Human companions: Krista and Patrick Allen, 25 and 27 respectively
are loyal Jayhawks, Chiefs, and Royals fans who like to play with
Phog, travel, and enjoy time with friends and family

Riley and Rudy
|
Town: Springfield, Missouri
Deaf dog: Rudy is a 20 month Chihuahua. We were looking for
another Chihuahua to add to our family. We found an ad in the paper
for AKC registered "teacup" (which doesn't exist) chihuahuas.
There were several puppies to choose from, and we chose Rudy. We
did not know that he was deaf. We never thought of giving him back
when we found out. He is a great dog, and has brought us much joy.
He loves to give kisses and take naps. He has never been agressive
with us. He is skittish around strangers, but we always explain
why. We love him just as much as our hearing dog. If I had it to
do all over again and I knew Rudy was deaf, I would pick him again.

Stella
|
Town: Osborn, Missouri
Deaf dog: Stella, a Great Dane puppy. Her mom writes "Stella
was born 2/18/00 and is still doing wonderfully. Stella came from
a puppy mill situation that seems to produce a fair amount of deaf
dogs, through irresponsible breeding. This poor dog could have wound
up in the wrong hands and been bred, if not abused and neglected.
Stella is a joy to be around and she is very intelligent. She learned
some basic sign language very quickly and I think is one of our smartest
dogs! She loves to go on long walks or play with her many brothers
and sisters in the yard, but she also loves a good nap on the couch!
Stella is the youngest of our "herd" at just over age 2."

Town: Bridgeton, Missouri
Deaf dog: Ghost is a 10 month old Australian Shepherd. "Ghost
was born deaf. Let's just say it was love at first sight. He was a
little scared & full of mats, but once I started scratching his belly,
he fell in love too. When we picked him up, he had never been on a
leash, but he took to it right away. He did great in the car (but
shed all over). Once we put him in the backyard and let the other
kids out to meet him, he let them know I may be deaf but be nice to
me. Our only real problem is that he really wants to herd my Golden
Retriever, Marshall. He was doing it to my 12 lb blue merle Sheltie
for a day, but she finally was like, wait a minute, I am the herder
around here. So she put him in his place, now she will herd him if
he tries to herd Marshall. So I think it will all work out just fine,
he is already learning signs. He loves my fiance and my 13 year old
daughter. He is mostly white with black patches on his back and has
one blue eye one brown eye. SO CUTE."

Mojo |
Town: Pleasant Hill, Missouri
Deaf dog: Mojo is an 8 month old Jack Russell Terrier. "I
bought Mo from a breeder who wanted to put him down. I didn't know
then that he would save my life too. In Dec. of last year our three
Jack Russells were used as target practice by a trespassing hunter.
We found them and several other dogs along a creek behind his house.
We contacted the sheriff, game warden, the humane society. They closed
the case over the phone in less than an hour. I was told they had
more important cases. I spent the next 2 months in a deep depression.
Then God sent me Mo. He reminded me of all the good things about my
babies. I see so much of them everyday through Mo. It took me a few
days to realize he was deaf but by then he had given me so much. One
week later I bought Foxy. It's amazing how close they are. He follows
her lead. She deserves most of the credit for training him. He is
such a loving dog. I truly believe he was heaven sent."

Joey |
Town: Springfield, Missouri
Deaf dog: Joey is a 6 month old Boxer. "Joey (aka:Joe
Boxer) is 6 months old now. He was a birthday gift to my son, Eric
when Joey was 6 weeks old. We realized he was deaf the first day he
was with us. We could have traded him for a different dog from the
breeder, but he was just too adorable. When he turned 2 months old,
we were advised by the Vet if we got another dog, Joey would be easier
trained. We went to the Humane Society and adopted a 6 week old Black
Lab. His name is Max. He has helped Joey soooo much. He made house
training much easier, among other things. Everything we teach Max,
Joey learns at the same time. It just amazes me. They are both a couple
of goofs. They play all of the time. We built them a a very large
dog house because they would not sleep in their separate dog houses.
They tried to pile in the same one. We even built the new dog house
with a radiant heat floor in it. They sleep very close together in
the house also. Joey is also an attention-getter. He gets in these
moods where he wants to run as fast as he can, and if you act like
you are going to try to catch him, he just tucks his butt and runs
faster. He will stop really fast and then tuck his butt and take off
again. He is hilarious! While all of this is going on, Max is lying
like a rug. He is our calm one. He just looks at Joey like he is weird."
