Deaf dogs: Molly is a 10 year old Scottish Terrier. Molly is
our sweet girl. She came into our lives when she was a wee 5 months
old. She loves to hunt for moles in the backyard and keep an eye on
her furless brothers and sister. We noticed Molly was going deaf about
the time of her fur-brother, Duncan, crossing over the Bridge in November
2007. Even with the deafness, she is still a true Scottie - full of
life!! :)

Sally Bear
|
Town: Inkster, Michigan
Deaf dogs: Sally Bear is an 8 yr old Lab mix who came to
us as a young pup. I found her on my daily walk with my huge dane
mix Teeny. She wouldn't come to us, so my husband ran back to pick
her up. We didn't realize at first she may have been hard of hearing.
Thought just stubborn. At about age 5, it finally dawned on us that
she was completely deaf. Once we knew that, it was only a matter
of days before we were communicating like old pals. It was like
a new dog took over, and the cool, aloof dog was history. She is
now a loving little bundle of hard-working snuggle bug. Sally has
recently been diagnosed with cancer. Although she is doing well,
any prayers or goodthoughts on her behalf are greatly appreciated

we have a wonderful vet who is supportive and knowledgable. We are
currently teaching Lumia hand signs and she is

Aurora Dior

Town: Ferndale, Michigan
Deaf dogs: Aurora Dior is a 1 and 1/2 year old Chinese Crested.
She was born deaf due to her "whiteness". She had five
other siblings who all were born with full hearing. She had two
BAER tests and they confirmed she was 100% deaf. She was originally
brought to the US from a breeder in Canada to be a show dog, but
due to her deafness, Aurora got spayed, and I've been her new "mom"
and training her ever since to be a therapy dog. She just graduated
from basic obedience this past December and is starting sub-novice
obedience next. Aurora is just such a special girl, she loves kids,
loves everyone she meets, and has never met a dog who hasn't liked
her instantly...she's just magnetic!

|
Town: Goodrich, Michigan
Deaf dogs: My 20 year old (animal
lover) has and has been riding Horses most of her life, we were
at one of her High School equestrian events at The Detroit State
Fair a couple of years ago. We were strolling through the cow barn
when she saw a posted sign "Australian Shepherd Puppies For
Sale" and of course she wanted to "just look", well,
as soon as we, "she" set eyes on them I knew we would
not be going home empty-handed. There we 10 puppies altogether,
she picked one out but by the time we went back with the money someone
had already purchased that particular puppy, so she picked another,
she was soon to be named "Sadie-Lynn". Being the Mom,
I was left with the task of breaking the news to her Dad, "We're
adding ANOTHER member to our family" which already consisted
of (2) 12 year old Yorkies, 4 horses and many, many, outside mouser
cats. Good thing Kelsey was the youngest and the rest were grown
and gone. Sadie was only 6 weeks old when we brought her home, she
was just adorable! She had a hard time staying up when pottying
because she was so young. It
didn't take us long before we knew something just wasn't right with
Sadie. The doors would open and shut, the vacuum would run and she
would never even flinch. I started clapping and whistleing close
to her ears, not even a flinch. I had Kelsey look up deaf dogs on
the internet, then we knew, it was all too obvious that she was
deaf. We called the lady we bought her from, she suggest she take
her back, NO WAY, we were in love with Sadie, hearing or deaf, we
didn't care. She is the prodect of Merle to Merle congenital deafness,
which is in-curable. Sadie is the most wonderful dog, she is full
of personality, a funny dog and protective. She's a beautiful dog,
with pretty blue starburst pupils. She's full of energy and LOVES
to have her bottom scratched. She responds to many hand signals,
head gestures and sometimes a look on the face, she knows what's
wanted of her. Is she a lot of work, yes, but SOOOOO! worth it,
Sadie is much loved!
Snap is 1 and 1/2 year old Mini-Australian
Shepherd. My daughter Kelsey was on her own when she purchased a
6 month old deaf Mini-Australian Shepherd. She was at a Horse Expo
in Ohio with our 4-H leader Carrie. Carrie called me from Ohio to
tell me that my daughter Kelsey had adopted a baby, Kelsey didn't
want her to say "DOG..ANOTHER DOG!!! Well, Kelsey brought this
little guy home, Kelsey knew he was deaf when she bought him, another
product of merle to merle congenital deafness which is in-curable.
She brought him home and we fell in love instantly, "Snap"
is the sweetest, most lovable dog I have ever known, just an absolute
sweetheart, a real lover-boy. He's a real people dog and full of
personality, loves to play "anything", loves walks, and
loves to ride in the car. He also responds to hand signals....Snap
loves everyone and we love him.

Shaina |
Town: Ann Arbor, Michigan
Deaf dog: Shaina Pumin came into my life via the Michigan English
Setter rescue. I fell in love at first sight, and then found out she
was deaf. I am her fourth mom and her previous mom said she thought
Shaina was deaf due to ear infections. However, my vet said that based
upon her ears not showing telltale signs of past untreated disease
that it was most likely that she was deaf from birth. Considering
how much white she has, it would not surprise me. Shaina and I are
learning signing together. I believe that she would be a good candidate
for agility training (that or the circus) because she loves to leap
over laundry baskets and run under and through my dining room chairs
in sequence! Also, her field dog traits are so strong. Often, as she
points and sets on our walks, I think I can hear her screaming "Mom!
Get the gun!"

because he's clutzy and when he plays his ears fold back and stay
that way and he's silly. We're sorry to say that Duke passed away

Deaf dog: Cuddles is a 4 month old Spaniel mix. My puppy loves
to cuddle. That's how she got her name. My family went to a shelter

to cuddle all day. She will jump up next to you when you are sleeping
and put her head on your arm and take a nap then before you wake up
jump down. The training is hard because she doesn't look at me. Puppies
wear you out so they can take naps with you. We are not sure what
her breed is and can only guess. We have her today because somebody
got cancer. Her owner got to sick to care for his dogs. She is 99%

occations that they had to actually shake him awake. While the other

Deaf dog: Pooter is a one year old Jack Russell/Aussie mix.
"We got Pooter when a friend asked if he could use our kennel
for a dog that got dumped at his house before he went to the pound.
We said that we would keep him until we found him a home. So we took
him for a check up to get his shots, and get fixed. The vet said he'd
probably be blind by the age of two. We then put him in the lost and
founds, and the internet but nobody took him. We did find him a good
home, our own. He's very smart, loves to go on walks, and cuddle.
He's not aggressive towards people but is very defensive of us to
other dogs. He is now a very large part of our lives and we hardly
know he's deaf. We love him very much, and can't imagine life without

Town: Fowlerville, Michigan
Deaf dog: Oliver is a 9 year old miniature Dachshund. "Until
last yr I had two dogs, Heidi, an Australian Shepherd mix and Oliver.
Heidi, who I am sure could hear, passed away last yr at the age of
15. Oliver was her constant companion. After she died we thought his
lack of responsiveness such as failing to meet us at the door when
we came home, not coming in when he was called, etc., was due to depression.
It slowly dawned on us over a period of months that Oliver is deaf.
According to our vet he is profoundly deaf and judging by the lack
of damage to his inner ears , he has been deaf since birth. Who knew?
It is shocking to me that anyone would even consider not keeping a
dog that is deaf. Oliver is housebroken, follows the routine of the
household, comes in now with the visual help of a flashlight. He is
a joy and delight and the same lovable pet he was before we learned
he was deaf. We used to joke around, since he never learned to sit,
lie down, or roll over on command, that he just wasn't very bright.
"The! lights are on but nobody's home." It was actually we who are
on the slow side as it took us all of 9 yrs to figure out we have
a deaf dog."

Sidony |
Town: Grand Rapids, Michigan
Deaf dog: Sidony is a 9 month old English Cocker Spaniel. "Sidony
is a black and white parti-colored with black points, she's quite
stunning . While looking for an EC, the breeder offered this one after
learning I wasn't interested in showing and that I had prior experience
with a deaf Cocker (Am). After much consideration and discussion with
my vet and other deaf dog owners I brought the puppy home. Deafness
in my previous Cocker was age, and perhaps tumor related as we were
to discover later, but she was well trained by the onset and it was
fairly easy to switch to hand and/or light signals. This, as I expected,
is harder as I must teach her that we CAN communicate before I can
teach her how. She's a sweetie though, and I'm not about to give up
on her."

Town: Ypsilanti, Michigan
Deaf dog: Martha and Millie are 10-month old Australian Shepards.
When they were 5wks old, they were brought to a shelter in northern,
KY. They were found wandering along a road on a snowy February weekend.
We stopped in the shelter and couldn't resist nor could we separate
the two.
We brought them back to Michigan and they were given a clean bill
of health by the vet. The next day they both developed Parvo. Martha
suffered worse than her sister Millie. They have both recovered and
are now very energetic dogs.
Their deafness is hardly noticeable because they follow our other
dog's lead and get cues from him. Don't forget the bonuses of having
a deaf dog. They aren't distracted by other dogs. When you are walking
them they don't pull towards dogs barking at them and they don't get
involved in the late night chorus of the neighborhood dogs.
Martha is a very loving dog. She has a very very developed sense of
smell and can find her toys wherever they may be.
Millie likes to watch things more than her sister and is a great ball
fetcher. She will bring the ball back to my hand and even picks up
balls that her sister fails to deliver fully.
We enjoy having deaf dogs. The benefits of them not being distracted
by other dogs is better than than the drawbacks. They are so alert
in every other respect that most people don't notice they are deaf
without being told.

Town: Quincy, Michigan
Deaf dog: "Boo was dropped off by ? We didn't know she was
deaf when we decided to keep her. She is short haired and white except
for tan spots on silky droopy ears. Her belly skin has spots too.
She has one blue eye and one brown eye. About 18 inches tall. My husband
discovered her deafness when he was playing his clarinet and she did
not respond to the high notes, didn't even wake up. I aquired two
books on deaf dogs and started teaching her sign. She does quite well
for the time we have put into it. We live on a farm and she loves
to chase the barn cats and the chickens whenever she gets the chance.
She is of course on a lead whenever she is outside, but does sneak
out once in a while. Her favorite spot is on a cot by a window watching
for cars to go by or a cat to cross the yard so she can bark at them.
And bark she does. We also have a 7 year old Airdale who is an outside
dog. Boo dearly loves to play with her.
We have one problem and anyone who can help would be great. There
are times when we have to leave her alone in the house, which was
fine up to about a month ago. Now she tears up things she knows not
to touch, like a book I was reading, and a cover to a footstool. Getting
down old teddy bears from a shelf. I could go on. What can we do to
remedy this situation? HELP!"

Francis |
Town: Allen Park, Michigan
Deaf dog: We adopted Francis on 3/7/03 at the age of 1 year
from Italian greyhound rescue. It ends up that he is actually related
to one of my existing IGs, Roxanne. Her sister was his grandmother.
Anyhow, Francis is never far from Roxy and they curl up to sleep together
and she has become his "ears". Francis came from OH where he was left
out in the cold wintry weather and became frost bitten because his
humans didn't understand how he tried to communicate that he wanted
outside to potty. He has had a few accidents this past winter, but
what IG doesn't in the wintertime? He is a good boy and has slept
every night in bed with us including day one. He loves to play, he
destroys stuffed animals within minutes and he loves to run in the
yard. He knows sign language such as "outside", "good boy", "no" and
"come", and he obeys well. He tries so hard to be a good dog and I
must say he is very successful. We love him to pieces.

Town: Grand Rapids, Michigan
Deaf dog: Bella is a female GoldenRetriever/Border Collie who
is 22 months old. Bella is a delight! I learned about Bella online
and drove across the state to meet her. It was love at first sight!
I have been working with her in obedience classes. \ She is very smart
and studies my face so intently, she looks like she is trying to read
my lips! I hope to get her certified as a therapy pet. She has come
to my classroom and is wonderful with my students. Bella's motto is
Fetch IS Life! Recently, I taught her how to catch a ball while sitting!
Bella, her mother and her litter mates had all been abandoned near
a hospital in Flint, MI in August 2001. They were rescued by a medical
student who has saved many dogs. She never gave up on finding a forever
home for Bella and in June 2002, she came home with us! The vet speculated
that Bella's deafness was caused by a high fever and lack of water
while homeless.
Human companions: Ken and Karen MacGregor
Other pets: Bob, a hearing dog, age 11 1/2 years; two cats:
Akiko, age 14 1/2, and Maxie, age 3.

Evita |
Town: Roseville, Michigan
Deaf dog: Evita is a 19 month old Dogo Argentino. "I bought
Evita from an unscrupulous who swore that Evita was BAER tested and
was fine. The breeder was always going to send the results to me,
but I never got them so I had her tested when she was about a year
old (no longer trusted the breeder and there were too many signs of
her being deaf to ignore). We found out she is deaf in her left ear
and nearly deaf in her right ear (she can hear some high pitched sounds
in the right ear). Needless to say, Evita is the best, sweetest, most
loving and affectionate, and smartest dog in the world. She went to
doggy school and her first year of life without us knowing she was
deaf and doing a great job of getting along in a hearing world. She's
a lot happier, though, now that we know she's deaf and that now we
understand how to communicate with her. She is my best friend - my
world! She is a big, white, lovable mushball! She is a chatterbox
- not with barking but with noises, like she's talking to us. She
has a gentle soul, loves kids and her "baby brother" Lance, our hearing
Whippet. She is the best thing that ever happened to me!"
Human companions: Amy Burnard, her brother, sister-in-law,
and two nephews.
Other pets: A hearing Whippet named Lance.

Mackie

Snowman |
Town: Eastpointe, Michigan
Deaf dogs: Mackie is a Dalmatian born in February 2003.
"Mackie is a sweet puppy rescue who came from Columbus, OH through
Dal Rescue. I had a deaf dog before and believe they are wonderful,
so I actively searched for another deaf one to add to my family. My
smart collie knows how to help a deaf dog so I knew it was right to
have one."
Snowman is a 2 year old Catahoula Leopard Dog. "Snowman
came to me as a foster dog. He had been tied outside most of his young
life and when we found him, he had heartworm. He is cured now and
has won my heart and is now part of our family. He is a great brother
to his deafie dal Mackie and plays with all the new foster dogs that
come through our house. He is a gem!"
Human companions: Lori Zawacki
Other pets: Bullet, female Border Collie mix; Buddy, male golden/orange
Tabby; Ms. Edie, female black/gray Tabby; and Mr. Mooney, male black/brown
Tabby.

Town: Clinton, Michigan
Deaf dog: Buddy is a 10 year old Collie mix. "Buddy came
to me as a rescue 12/02. I had lost my Rottie several months before
and didn't think I was ready for another dog. The rescue I volunteer
at had snatched him from a kill shelter just in the nick of time.
As the weeks went by and nobody wanted him because of his deafness,
I got permission to foster him and get him out of a crate for a while.
Well, that sweet collie temperament and his gratitude did me in and
we have been together ever since. I took a book on ASL, made some
changes for 1 handed commands and he is doing famously."
Human companions: Mary Green and Aunt Nell
Other pets: Two cats - Michael and Oreo.

Caleb |
Town: Lowell, Michigan
Deaf dog: Caleb is a 12 year old Lab mix. "Caleb, my 12
year old lab mix was a stray that ended up at my parents home 11 years
ago. His wonderful temperment and beautiful brown and black brindle
coat instantly gained him a spot in my heart and room on my bed. Just
in the past 2 years he has begun to lose his hearing, fortunately,
it doesn't seem to bother him too much. In fact, it may be a little
helpful when storms come in, he no longer is startled at night from
thunder. His days consist now of laying on his couch, playing with
my daughter, Shelby (5), and Bryce (2). Following me to the horse
barn to do chores, and a massage once a month. Caleb is a cherished
member of our family!"
Human companions: Kristin & Brandon Damstra, Shelby, 5
and Bryce, 2.

Huey |
Town: Southgate, Michigan
Deaf dog: Huey is a 5 year old Australian Cattle Dog (Blue
Heeler). "I'm so glad I adopted Huey. He is a loving boy and
loves to learn. I wish I could spend more time with him. I found Huey
at pet-finders. In his info it stated that he was deaf and he had
crossed-eyes, well I did not think anyone would adopt him so I asked
the husband if the three of us could go and meet him (three of us,
husband, hearing dog Brandy and me). We drove to Ohio (4 1/2 hrs.)
met Huey, fell in love, and now he has a forever home. Huey has been
with us for 3 yrs. We showed him how to eat a chewie with his paws
and Brandy tought him that a cookie is a good thing. I think the best
thing about Huey is when he does not want to hear he closes him eyes."
