Blizzard
Town: Augusta, Maine
Deaf dog: Blizzard is a 4 month old Boxer. My friends are breeders and that's where I got Blitz from. He was the last of his litter and so lovable so I had to give him a home. There were always other dogs around so it wasn't until he was home with me that I started to notice something was different. Keeping in mind I've been around this dog since he was born. Anyways out of the two litter and 18 puppies born there were 5 white Boxers and I guess I just got the special one. The flip side is he is wicked smart. I work a lot and don't have a ton of time to train him but we are in puppy class. Even if I don't work with him during the week he still gets everything right in class. he was house broken at 3 months and is great with my 2 y/o nephew.
Human companions: Tanya
Other pets:
I have a 20y/o cat Samantha who is actually going deaf and a Hamster named Clementine. Blizzard loves both, the Cat hates him and the Hamster is indifferent.

Puppa Dawg

Town: Westbrook, Maine
Deaf dog: Puppa Dawg is a 3 year old American Bulldog. We rescued Puppa Dawg from the Animal Rescue League in estbrook, ME. He had had five different homes before we adopted him. He had just turned one. He is very smart and he picked up hand signals in a heart beat. He is very good at reading facial expressions and body language. He even knows when I'm leaving the
house when he smells my perfume. As soon as he smells it he runs to the front door. If I look at him and raise my eyebrow he gets very excited and he barks. That's our way of telling him to speak. No matter where you hide something, he can sniff it out. He loves laying out in the sun with my daughter in the summer time. Since he has a pink snout we have to put sunscreen on him. No one wanted to take the time to get up and teach him. There was no telling him or yelling at him. Everything had to be "get up and show him" In no time he was trained and he is the most loving dog in the world. One of the saddest things was that we also had to teach him how to play. We love him so much. He LOVES to cuddle!! He must be in bed by 10pm or he gets cranky. He waits until everyone is settled in bed, then he jumps up on the bed and comes to the head of the bed and crawls underneath the covers till he is completely covered at the foot of the bed. Now we can't even remember what our lives were like without him.
Human companions: Mom, and two teenage girls
Other Pets: We rescued a cat with double paws named Snicklefritz 7 years ago, Rupert a 5 year old Snapping Turtle we rescued from our parking lot. He was a hatchling and had a bad eye and bad leg. He was the size of a quarter. None of the wild animal rescue places wanted him so we kept him and now he is healthy and thriving.

Brutus

Town: Portland, Maine
Deaf dog: Brutus is a 2 year old Boston Terrier. Brutus was our foster dog (we volunteer for a Boston terrier rescue called Friends Of Homeless Animals Inc., (http://www.petfinder.com/~RI76/index.html). Brutus had been a stray in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and was brought to our rescue through a sister rescue in the south. We really had no intentions on keeping a third dog (we have two hearing pug mixes already). But the moment we met Brutus we knew we couldn't let him go! So after 2 weeks we had officially adopted him... :) He is the sweetest, friendliest most affectionate dog I have ever met! He loves everyone and everything and nothing seems to bother him! He takes life in stride, is curious about everything and is just an all around amazing little guy! He just happens to be deaf... :) He is still new to the family and he is learning his hadsignals and is doing very well! To the point where we are planning to eventually have him CGC certified and hopefully have him certified as a therapy dog! He just has the best temperament ever... And what better than to have a dog with disabilities help people with disabilities!

Brutus has a blog: http://brutustheboston.blogspot.com
He is also on myspace: http://www.myspace.com/brutustheboston
And also on dogster: http://www.dogster.com/dogs/782094

Town: Anson, Maine
Deaf dog: Spider is a 4 month old American Bulldog. My aunt got an American Bulldog one day about 2 or 3 months ago (Jan. '08)
and I decided that that would be the next dog we get. Or a dog for me anyway. So she calls me up 2 or three days ago (April '08) and leaves a message on my machine, "I have a bulldog here who needs a home, there is only one problem with her". So when I call her, she says she is deaf. I decided to meet her to see if I could deal with having a deaf dog in my active house. And I instantly fell in love with her. She is a wonderful addititon to our home. She is as active as the rest of us. We find she has no disability at all. She just can't hear. :) We will never give her up. My son named her Spider after Spiderman. He says she is sneaky like one. And trust me she is.

Adain
Luke
Town: Sabattus, Maine
Deaf dog: Luke is a 3-6 years Australian Cattle Dog. We got Luke (previously Ichabod) from Rescue Unlimited. I saw his post first on petfinder and later on deaf dog's site. He had this fabulous smiling picture with bright eyes...love at first sight. He has been with us for only two weeks, but I have never met a sweeter dog. He only wants to be near us and please us. I think he is starting to understand that this is his forever home and is showing his personality more and more. He loves sliding on the snow, on his back, wiggling and kicking for speed. He is so smart and learns with only a few repetitions. Usually he knows what we want him to do before we give the command, though. We couldn't have asked for a better dog, hearing or not.

Human companions: Pat and Bill

Zeb
Zeb

Town: Norridgewock, Maine
Deaf dog: Zeb
is a Boston Terrier that is 12wks old. I got Zeb at 8 weeks old, I didn't know he was deaf, I got him for my birthday from my partner. He also has hypospadias, which we knew before we got him, after two weeks with Zeb we realize he wasn't responding to his name and he wouldn't move or flinch when anything noisy came near him, so after taking him to the vet, we varified he was deaf. We told the breeder and she said we could get our money back but we would have to give back Zeb. I would never he is so cute and cuddly. Very good natured and calm. He is pretty much house broken, and has started to learn signs, he knows "No", "Speak", "Stay" and we are still working on others. My partner and I work with special needs adults, so we are the perfect parents for this little guy.

Anyone with information for us new parents please email us some tips we would apprecaite it. Thanks.

JD
JD (left) and Max (right)

Town: Steep Falls, Maine
Deaf dog: JD is a 2 year old Australian Shepherd. We just can’t tell you how grateful we are to our dear friend, Melissa Shaffer who encouraged us to adopt a deaf dog from DDEAF, has a deaf dog herself when we mentioned her that we were considering to get another dog for our beloved dog, Max (hearing) to have a company. We really never thought of that because we’re profoundly deaf ourselves. We decided to adopt a deaf dog and got one. I fell in love with JD at first sight when my husband and I first saw him in a crate at the cargo and our bond were clicked right away after I tried to comfort and give him some time to come out of the crate. He became secure with me because he knew that I was deaf and it was amazing to watch how he could sense that! It was our natural connection with our language. We became very close each other. He loves to cuddle me and my family! JD and Max became great siblings and love to play together. JD constantly melts my heart whenever I look a! t him. He has been learning a few ASL quickly and we’re continuing to teach him more ASL. He’s a superiorly smart, gorgeous, and affectionate dog! We will never trade him for anything because he’s a very special dog in our life and we love him! We want to thank Melissa for this wonderful encouragement. Thank you, Melissa! :-)
Human companions: Mom (Jennifer), Dad (Matthew) and our precious sons, Benjamin & Jonathan
Other pets: JD's rascal buddy, Max - Miniature Australian Shepherd
