Cody
| Town: Stevensville, Maryland
Deaf dog: Cody is a wonderful 2 yr. old deaf Mini Aussie. I
adopted Cody from the Cleveland Ohio Dog Advocates Rescue Group (C.O.D.A.)
when he was six months old. Cody and I have completed basic and advanced
obedience, beginner and intermediate agility classes. Cody had his
agility competition debut Memorial Day weekend 2007. He earned 9 titled
in his first 7 1/2 months of competing, as well as earning his Novice
Versatility Award. Cody really loves agility and he has come so far
in such a short time that I am excited about his competitive agility
future. I only hope that my handling skills can keep up with him.
:-)
Human companions: Leanne
Other pets: Cody has a hearing fursister, Sydney, a 5 yr. old
Cockapoo who also competes in agility and recently completed her NATCH,
perhaps the first Cockapoo to do so, but I haven't been able to verify
that yet.

Sydney
|
Town: Eldersburg, Maryland
Deaf dog: Sydney Aine is a 7 year old Dalmatian. I just adopted
Sydney on 9/1/07 from a Dalmatian Rescue. We did not know the level
of her hearing at that time. She was dropped in a shelter in January
of this year after her owners suffered a family crisis. She was
fostered and well cared for. She's beautiful and loving and just
a joy to have around. We know nothing about caring for and training
a deaf dog. But we love her very much and anyone that has tips,
tricks or advice is welcome to contact us. All we want is for her
to be happy and have a wonderful life!

lost in New York City. She was put into a high risk shelter. A special

dog around us.
Peaches is a 3 year old Rough Jack Russell.

much more. She is always the adventure dog and the most powerful
dog and loves to be the boss of everyone.
Prince is our 5th dog in the family. We were fostering him but
ended up adopting him. He was in horrible shape when we brought
him into the family but with care he came around. He is the most
charming dog we ever had. He loves to be home where there are so
many soft places to sit. He acts like a soldier when so many people

Gertrude
|
Town: Towson, Maryland
Deaf dog: Gertrude is a 9 month old English Bulldog. We are
very blessed to have found Gerty. I am a member of a Bulldog forum,
which I joined when we got Gerty's adopted brother, Carl - who is
a (hearing) English Bulldog. Another member of the forum had put
a deposit on Gerty, who had been bred for showing and breeding,
but was unable to give her a home when she learned of Gerty's deafness.
We immediately made the 6 hour drive to get Gertrude, and she is
such a wonderful part of our family. She is the most affectionate
puppy in the world - she is constantly snuggling with Carl or one
of us.
Human companion: Lindsay Hughes and Kevin Fryer
Other pets: Carl, who is about 10 months older than Gerty

in a park in Washington D.C. at the age of 5 months. We adopted her
from the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League, Inc. when she was
7 months old. Aspen also has some vision limitations as well. She's
learned approximately 30 hand signals and has phenomenal problem solving
skills. She's a true ambassador for our breed at all of the fund raising
events our rescue participates in. I'm blessed to share my life with
my deaf Great Dane, Aspen, and have helped other people in adopting
deaf Danes through my work with the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue

China |
Town: Wheaton, Maryland
Deaf dog: China was saved from a county shelter that was convinced
that she needed to die because of her deafness. We talked them into
letting us adopt her anyway. We've never regreted one moment. She
is the light of our lives and has convinced us that we will never
again be without a Dane and preferably a deaf Dane. We also hope to
start a small-scale deaf rescue in the near future. Adopting a deaf
dog was one of the best things we've ever done for US! I would never
have believed how much China could have enriched our lives. She is
so very smart and crafty. She has the most wonderful personality.
She's such a clown and makes us laugh all the time. I love my "little"
girl very much.
Human companions: My husband Rob and I (Barb) are the only

Olivia

Harpo |
Town: Adelphi, Maryland
Deaf dog: Olivia is a 2 1/2 year old Dalmatian. She was my
foster. She was adopted by Harpo's owner to keep Harpo company after
his hearing Dalmatian passed on. Tim specifically wanted another deaf
Dal because "they are the most loving and affectionate of dogs." When
Tim contracted cancer, I took both dogs to care for until he got better.
Unfortunately, that didn't happen, and I promised Tim that they would
live out their lives with me...an easy promise to keep because they
are both wonderful, sweet dogs.

Nikita |
Town: Lexington Park, Maryland
Deaf dog: Girlie (Nikita) is a Great Dane who is 150lbs of
white super fun and always looking for something to get into companion.
She drags her 185lb brother across the living room when they play
- even now when she's almost 7 years old. She's a lover and spoiled
rotten - loves our waterbed, ice cream, cookies, her Sunday morning
French Toast or pancakes - with extra syrup! She is also mostly blind
but we get large 5 gallon pickle bucket lids for a frizbee. She can't
see where it goes but she'll snort it down until she finds. She loves
life and LOVES ANYONE who will play with her - just throw it, pull
it, or something - but just play. She never stops! She is never aggressive
but she doesn't realize how big she is. She is always happy to greet
anyone or anything that comes in the yard. She also loves the water.
She's a special girl and has a great personality. She really loves
life. I really would recommend a deaf, blind, or otherwise handicapped
animal to most folks. They honestly do seem to have an appreciation
of life.
Human companions: My wife and I are all the immediate family.
Other pets: Joab - black Great Dane. Lots of ducks, geese,
and whatever else wanders up out of the creek. The ducks don't pay
her no mind anymore. She sniffs'em down but they just walk away knowing
she can't see. It's kind of funny - they know somethings up and she
knows something there but she never catches them.

Town: Baltimore, Maryland
Deaf dog: Angel is a 1/2 year old Papillon mix. her family
says "Angel is a true angel. She is very intelligent, sensitive and
loving. Loves playing with our two hearing dogs, who are five times
her size. We adopted her from a rescue group, but traced her history
back to the family that allowed her to be born. Her first adopted
family could not deal with a special needs dog and gave her up to
the rescue group, rather than euthanizing her, which many people told
them to do. Angel has passed the screening to be a therapy dog with
the local Pets on Wheels program - she visits an assisted living facility
once a week and loves to be cuddled and to be the center of so much
loving attention! We just bless the day that she entered our lives
- we are so much the richer for being able to share our lives with
her."
Human companions: June & Terry Bond

Shepherd mix (Both Lady and Chloe are rescues also).

Hero (in back) & Lily |
Town: Baltimore, Maryland
Deaf dog: Hero is a 1 year old Dalmatian. His family says "He's
the best dog we've ever had!! He's incredibly happy, playful and affectionate.
He's extremely visual - loves mirrors, actually watches T.V.! We've
never seem him become aggressive, even when startled. He's great with
kids. We use a vibrating collar for off-leash walks in the woods with
no problem - he stays close by and consistently checks to make sure
everything's O.K. (even when we don't "page" him). He's also very,
very good in the house - plays with his own toys only and never destroys
or even touches, really, anything he shouldn't (and he knows what
he shouldn't touch!) Oh, and he loves socks!!"
Human companions: Lisa Capitos and her husband, Albert
Other pets: Lily, a four-year old lemon/white pointer that
we adopted from a local shelter. She and hero seem to be doing very
well together.

Deaf dog: Pepper is a 16 year old Chow/Aussie mix. "Pepper
is the best companion I've ever had! She loves everyone and demands
to be petted. She was rescued from a local humane shelter at the age
of 10 years and I loved her at first sight. She's getting older now,
but I know that the past 6 years of her senior life have been perfect
for her! I hope that anyone reading this submission will also make
an effort to adopt a senior dog with hearing loss. They are the best
creatures in the world!"

Town: Gaithersburg, Maryland
Deaf dog: Katie is a 9+ year old Boston Terrier. "I adopted
Katie at 6 months from Boston Terrier Rescue of Maryland/Virginia.
She had originally been purchased from a pet store, and given up when
the original owners found out she was deaf. I have had absolutely
no regrets about bringing her into my life. I have grown up with Bostons
in my life, and my father had grown up with them in his life, and
neither of us have noticed any difference between her and the other
Bostons in our lives. She currently lives with 5 other large dogs,
and she gets along with them fine, as she is the oldest and the bossiest!
She loves to shop, go to the vet, and meet other people and dogs.
I talk to her and treat her as I would any other dog, and although
she has had obedience training, she and I are lax on following through.
She always has to be with people, and that, coupled with her small
size, means that I rarely have to worry about what she is up to or
if she is "out of control." We communicate with a mixture of hand
signals and facial gestures, and have no problem staying in sync.
I wouldn't hesitate to adopt another deaf Boston, I've been more than
lucky to have Katie in my life!"

Dingo |
Town: Hanover, Maryland
Deaf dog: Dingo is a 4 month old Australian Shepherd. "Dingo
is a double merle Aussie and he has double the love! We found his
brother on DDEAF
and emailed the breeder to adopt his brother, but he was already adopted.
She told me she had another deaf dog, and a week later Dingo was on
a plane from Florida. When we took him out of his crate at the airport
he jumped on me and licked my face, and he has followed me around
ever since. Dingo is a little trickster, every week he escapes from
the pen at puppy play group. Dingo is also a smart puppy - in less
than a month he has learned sit, stay, lay, shake my hand, come, and
loves to give high-fives! You can also find Dingo on our website
in the about us section!"

Curly (top) and Choopie |
Town: Reisterstown, Maryland
Deaf dog: Curly is an Akita/Dalmatian mix. "My favorite
lab mix dog, Blackie got older. I swore that she would be my last
dog. But I happened to rescue a hearing puppy, Choopie from the busy
street in the Baltimore city. He loved to be with Blackie. He would
not be happy to be alone. So I decided to get a Deaf dog because I
am Deaf. Here comes Curly, which I got through DDEAF
website. I was looking for a same age and size for Choopie. Curly
is so sweet and loveable. Also very protective of me. Choopie and
Curly play and fight as brothers."

Town: Baltimore, Maryland
Deaf dog: Bert is a 3 year old Dogo Argentino. I got little
Bert when he was just under 4 months old and a teeny 30 lbs. Bert
is perhaps the most charming dog I have ever met. He has truly brought
joy to my life, as well as many others that know and love him. He's
a big boy, and has a big personality to match! One of the things that
I taught him was that he needs to sit in order to get pet (most of
the time ;)). When I have friends over and we're standing around chatting,
he will go from person to personand sit in front of them, ears cocked,
intently waiting and hoping to be pet. If they don't respond quick
enough, he'll just stand up, turn, and sit in front of the next person,
right aroung the circle. He will do this as long as we stand there.
It's quite funny to watch. I certainly cannot imagine my life without
my little Bert!

Town: Germantown, Maryland
Deaf dog: Oppih is an 18 month old Dogo Argentino. I have known
Oppih since he was 6 months old & tossed into my friends rescue since
he was deaf & the breeder refused to take the dog back. 1 disadvantage
of ordering a dog over the internet & not meeting the breeders.
Since I have 3 other toy dogs & live in a condo I can have no more
but I will be moving soon & since a year later he is still in rescue
he will be going with me. He is very well socialized since there are
rescue dogs in & out of the house all the time & at least 10 dogs
there at all times. Since I am taking him I have started to walk him
weekly to work off the fat & have been doing training with him. He
is a fast learner & very smart. I hope to do more obedience showing
when I have the time & money. Dogos are very intelligent & I love
the sporting breeds so his silliness mixed with his smarts is a perfect
match for me.

Angel |
Town: Bel Air, Maryland
Deaf dog: Angel is a American Bulldog/Dalmation Mix that is
3 years old. I rescued Angel from the local Humane Society about a
year ago. She is by far the sweetest and most loving dog I have ever
had. She's a big snuggle bug but also loves to romp and play. I didn't
know she was deaf when I adopted her and found that she was hard to
communicate with. However now that I know she just couldn't hear me,
we've worked on hand signals and she knows I mean business when she
gets the look. I wouldn't trade this sweetheart for anything.

Yogi |
Town: Clarksville, Maryland
Deaf dog: Yogi is Australian Cattle Dog/Terrier that is 9 mos.
I adopted Yogi from Homeward Trails, a rescue in Virginia, they got
him out of a high kill shelter in rural part of Virginia. After he
was adopted, the family found out he was deaf and decided to foster
him til he found a home. That is when adopted Yogi. I have never had
a deaf dog before but he is a really smart dog and he is doing great
after having him for about 6 weeks. I trained him to the invisible
fence and he can run free in our yard with our other dogs. He has
fit in really well. He is a great addition to our family and I wouldn't
give him up for anything. He is a very sweet loving dog. My daughter
had really become very attached to him and he to her also. I am really
glad that things worked out the way they did, so we ended up with
Yogi. He belongs with us and in the future I would not hesitate to
adopt another deaf dog.

Deaf dog: I got Ethel from a breeder I've known for many years.
In 25 years of breeding, she'd never had a deaf puppy and was very
concerned about finding the proper home when I called. She knew I
was up to the job when I decided I was ready for the challenge. Ethel
jumped in my arms and hasn't let me out of her sight since. It was
