Massachusetts Deaf Dogs

<< Back to US map

Town: Saugus, Massachusetts
Deaf dog: Frank is a 4 year old Australian Shepherd/Collie mix. Frank came to me when he was 4 years old, his old owner figured out he was deaf & the older dog that was there did not want him around. He went to basic training and he passed. He is so friendly, he wants to meet everyone. I have to stop people and ask if they will pet him. He loves to take walks, swim and go hiking. he does not like when you do not pay attention to him. He will nip me or push my bed to wake me up. He is the best dog, he knows when you're sick and you could swear he understands english. I don't think I can ever have a hearing dog again.
Human companions: Jennifer Powers, sister and neice.

Cassie - a.k.a - Littles

Town: Springfield, Massachusetts
Deaf dog: Cassie a.k.a Littles is a 1.5 year old Papillon. I got Littles from a breeder in Arkansas. Neither of us knew she was deaf. When I came home from work on the second day I got her, she was lying in her crate not moving at all when my other dogs were barking up a storm, happy to see me home. I was scared that she had died!!! When I ran over to her crate frantically yelling her name she didn't respond until I shook her crate. I'd never had a deaf dog before but I love her to pieces, she is my heart dog and wouldn't part with her for anything.

She's now a ball nut and will stare at one for hours, just waiting for you to throw it... if you don't, she attempts to herd us toward the ball so we see what she wants. She's like a bull in a china shop compared to Neiko the princess... they are very funny together! Neiko an Australian Shepherd, born 1998. We rescued Neiko from a shelter at roughly 5 years of age (September 2003). Don't know how anyone could have given up this little princess.
