Town: Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Deaf dog: Beethoven, a Catahoula Leopard Dog. "Toven is
now 2 years old and definitely Mom's (my) dog. He is wonderful. Being
a Catahoula, he has aggressive tendencies, but always listens to me.
We have stopped our training for a while and need to get back at it.
We have just acquired a hearing puppy that is part small Shepherd
and I think Chow. Toven likes him and we've had no problems yet at
least. Toven loves the heat, hates the cold and in the winter he can
most often be found in front of the fireplace. He is becoming a couch
potato and has a width (that we have to whittle down) to show for
it."
Human companions: Linda J. Hansen; daughters Mistie and Meghan.
Other pets: AnnaBelle, black Cocker; Tinkerbelle, his Catahoula
sister; Little Bear, puppy; Mugzy, pug; and 5 assorted cats, who he
loves to cuddle with but also to chase around the fenced in yard.

Town: Marrero, Louisiana
Deaf dog: Spanky's human writes: "spanky is an albino rottweiler
born on valentine's day. he is one of 6 in the litter. the people
who had him didn't know anything was wrong with him. i took 2 puppies
from the litter. when i first saw the litter when they were about
2 weeks old i spoke for spanky. knowing that there is usually something
wrong with albino animals, i didn't want to take a chace that he would
be put down just because he was different. spanky's sister [franny]
is very normal, but she was the one who seemed to be protective of
spanky, so i thought it would be best to bring both of them home.
i do have other dogs in my home, and the puppies are fitting right
in. spanky was the largest puppy in the litter. he's still the largest.
he is a people dog. he does't like to be out of sight of people. even
outside he tries to keep a person in his sight. he is very well behaved
for a puppy. when he does something he shouldn't, i tap him on the
nose to get his attention and then i wave two fingers in! front of
his face to say no-no, i say the words so he can see my mouth at the
same time. its rare that we have to repeat anything for him. when
he learns so does his sister. when he wants our attention he pulls
on our shoes or nips our ankles. he barked the first time a couple
of days ago and surprised himself. he looked like it scared him. spanky
looks like a baby polar bear. he likes to lay under my feet when i'm
on the puter. he plays ball with his sister when no-one else will
play with him. we have a 5 year old 110 pound lab and a 8 month old
rat terrier. our lab [marley] is the only one who tries to make the
babies mind him. he uses his nose to push them around and make them
do what he wants and growls when they don't pay attention to him.the
only thing marley won't share with any of the other dogs is his food
bowl. he shares his toys, bed, treets, and his master, but not his
food bowl. hope there will be someone who can give me some pointers
on training spanky. we are! just kind of winging it right now. i don't
know if there is ! a proven way to train deaf dogs. but, i'm hoping
that by learning so early that spanky is deaf that we will have an
easy time training him as he won't have to re-learn alot of things
he had already learned. if anyone has any sujestions that will help
please email me. i'm sure that i can use all the help that i can get.
spanky has really livened up our house. everybody that comes in has
to spend time playing with spanky.they all say they've never seen
a white rottweiler. and a deaf one at that. and they have all asked
how i train him so everyone that's around him is learning the same
hand signs that spanky is learning. so, you could almost say spanky
is training us. i don't allow anyone to show him new signals but myself
so that i know what he is being taught and he doesn't get confused
about who his master is. i have made a chart and posted it on my frig
as to the signals he is being taught and what they mean. there are
no small children in our home so we have to use the nei! ghorhood
children to teach him about children. so far there hasn't been a problem.
he likes children who play with him. i thought that the sooner he
learned about children and they learned about him the better it would
be for all. spanky likes water. he loves to take a bath. he also likes
to sleep on my water bed. when we can't find him in the house i know
where to look, in the very middle of my water bed. he likes to hide
from me."

Dovey Patches Adams |
Town: Pineville, Louisiana
Deaf dog: My wife found Dovey listed on the internet after
the loss of my longtime canine friend, Dawg. Dovey is very special
to our family, she is the child we never had. She likes to greet people
at the door with a smile, which sometimes scares them because she
is so big and showing all those teeth. She is quiet spoiled, she sleeps
on the bed and dominates the couch. She loves to go for drives and
to run free. It is difficult to find a place to let her go free, because
she cannot hear, we cannot call her back to us. She spends most of
her days being treated like a queen around the house or running through
it chasing the cat or our other dog "Spanky" a dachshund. Dovey LOVES
peanut butter and homeade garlic dog treats. She knows a few commands
such as, sit, beg and "get down off the counter!!!"
Human companions: TJ and Sherry
Other pets: 1 - cat named "bear" 1 - dachshund named "spanky"
2 - firebellied toads named "frc and frac"
