Kentucky Deaf Dogs

<< Back to US map
Town: Wilmore, Kentucky
Deaf dog: Pete is a 9 week old Boxer. At first, I never noticed anything different about Pete. His mother, Dixie
passed away from complications when his litter was only 4 days old. From then on, I got to know all of them very well. Pete was just like all of his hearing brother and sisters. I noticed he was deaf when he was about 5 weeks old, when I went in to feed them and despite all of the noise from all of the other puppies, Pete slept through everything. His deafness has become more apparent as he gets older. I decided to keep him and one of his sisters, Bailey. They are very close to each other, and won't even sleep without each other. Their best friend is my Shih Tzu, Allie who has watched over the litter ever since their mom died. I showed Pete a picture of his mother, Dixie and told him how she would have loved him. He stared at it for a minute and then started licking it as if he already knew. He has already got the "paper training" thing and won't go to the bathroom in the house unless it's on newspaper. He is soo smart!
Human companion: Grandpa George and Grandma Rosemary, John and Meaghan
Other pets: Bailey (Pete's littermate) and Allie (a Shih Tzu who "adopted" the puppies after their mom passed)

Wilson

Town: Nicholasville, Kentucky
Deaf dog: Wilson is a 2 year old Australian Shephard/Boston Terrier/Collie mix. He was the only deaf dog in his litter. The moment I saw him, he was so cute and cuddly I knew it was meant to be. At the time, I didn't know he was deaf. It was only later when he didn't recognize his name and never responded to my voice that we suspected he may be deaf. This has never stopped him from being the most wonderful dog! We only love him more and more every day. He is the sweetest and most charming dog I've ever had the pleasure of sharing my life with. He believes he's a lap dog.

Keller

Town: Frankfort, Kentucky
Deaf dog: Keller is a 2 year old Boxer/Greyhound/Rat Terrier. After graduating from college with a degree in education and a focus in ASL, someone called me and told me I HAD to go look at "this dog". I knew the minute I saw him I loved him. He came home with me that day and has made my life very interesting! My other dog Nemesis loves to wake up her sleeping brother when I come home!
Human companion: Allison and Anthony Lorenz
Other pets: Nemesis, a Chow, Shepherd, Rott mix

Felix

Town: Lexington, Kentucky
Deaf dog: Felix is a 9 month old Boxer. I adopted Felix when he was 3 months old. Apparently his mom was left to fend for herself while pregnant. He came to me with a rash that was healing thanks
to his foster mom, and coccidia. Felix is a sensitive soul but also full of mischief! He loves playing with other dogs at the dog park, annoying his boxer sister and jumping on kids :) He is a fast learner and I've just gotten a vibrating collar so I can get his attention from a distance. Because of his love of children and sensitive nature, I hope he can become a therapy dog when he is old enough.
Human companions: Kelsey Hostetler
Other pets: Delilah, a 6 year old hearing boxer

Henry

Town: Elizabethtown, Kentucky
Deaf dog: Henry was 50-60# of tongue and tail, and 100% happiness. I adopted him from an SPCA facility in California in Nov 1995. He was an incredible companion. He loved to go everywhere. He didn't know he was deaf. He did very well without being able to hear. I could be home for 10 minutes before he knew I was there! His deafness meant that I never let him loose. But, it also meant that I walked him 2 x per day, and had wonderful visits with him. He loved to bark. Anyone with dark blue / grey was a good reason to bark. So were birds, and squirrels. He managed to occupy a queen sized bed all by himself. Many nights I gladly slept on the edge. I'd never seen a dog drool for bananas and carrots. He'd take those over his biscuits any day -- and they are yummy biscuits by all dog accounts. He died happy, in his sleep. That morning, we went for a walk, doing all the usual dog stuff -- sniffing, peeing, barking, ... When I left the house at 5 pm, he was running around, playing with his toys. When I cam home a few hours later, he had already passed. People say, "I'm so sorry" when they learn of his death. But, I don't want anyone to be sorry; I want people to know that he was a wonderful friend. He didn't know he was deaf, and it didn't matter. He was still all dog.

Deaf dogs: Tia is all about happiness. She is happy all the time. I found her on the Deaf Dog site. The breeder's husband would not allow Tia to be put down. Therefore, Tia's first doggie mom search, found and put her on the Deaf Dog adoption list. As soon as I was told I had passed evaluation, I drove to FL and picked her up. Tia has the most wonderful personality and truly a "genius." I need to inform you that she allows my husband and I to live with her, and for that honor we pay the bills and clean. Hey don't get me wrong - we get paid back more than we give - Tia's love and devotion. Tricks...um...no just genius. I can sign to her the toy that we will play with and she will go get it. I also give her the ability to chose when I spell toy and sign find. She is getting to where she likes this command the best. All who know her say she is spoiled. We just can't help ourself - those big brown eyes just melt us. *SMILE*

Deaf dog: Sydney is a 1 1/2 year old Australian Cattle Dog/Deaf Dog rescue. One of the sweetest dogs I have ever had. Easily trainable and very smart. She passed her obedience class with flying colors. Our other (hearing) ACD, Sheila, will "go get Sydney" if we can't see her and want her to come to us. We can't imagine why no one wanted this wonderful dog.

Town: Louisville, Kentucky
Deaf dog: Delia, a 2 year old Dalmatian, was abandoned by her first owner. She was left by the side of I-65 in Tennessee with a 40-pound bag of dog food. A rescue worker picked her up and she made her way to St. Francis Animal Rescue in TN, where she was loved, cared for and fostered. Due to her playful, fun-loving nature, she got in trouble frequently with other dogs - she didn't hear the warning "you're going too far" growl in time to stop playing. Delia is fun loving and has the sweetest disposition for someone who has been abused, abandoned and beaten up by humans and animals.

Deaf dog: Fennigan was born as an AKC hunting water dog. It is not known when he bacame deaf but it is suspected that it happened at birth. He was left alone for three years and bounced from oliar to post. As a result he became very protective of his enviroment. Since rescuing him in May, it has been a long journey. His protection aggression is difficult but underneath all of that is the most wonderful dog. He is sweet and loves everyone. Just needs to learn to turst and know that this is his home. The family has learned a lot by having him here. We have a long way to go but slowly we are all learning sign and lots of hugs....

Town: Louisville, Kentucky
Deaf dog: Bobo's humans write: Bobo is our "only child" and is wonderful. We rescued him when he was a puppy at the Humane Society. We think he lost his hearing due to a series of severe staff infections but we are not exactly sure. His mommy teaches special education and taught him about 30 ASL signs in the past several years among a variety of other gestures and visual cues to help him get by. He has adapted wonderfully to not being able to hear and even goes to grandmas house to stay a few days at a time. Grandma, Grandpa and all of the nieces and nephews have all learned the sign we use with Bobo so they can all communicate with him too! His "cousin" Jackson, my brothers lab has picked up on the signs as well and will do the same thing we sign to Bobo when they are together. The next dog we get will be a rescue deaf dog for sure!
Human companions: Terri and Troy
Email: territeo@aol.com
Comment:Terri writes: I am a special education teacher and have used Bobo in lessons to help teach the importance of everyone learning sign language because you never know when deafness may strike you!

I bought her out of the paper, what I didnt know when I got her was that she was deaf until one day I called for her and she did not respond to me at all. I walked up behind her and clapped my hands, whistled, called her name, but she just laid there, never knowing that I had done any of those things. She is very smart!
