Illinois Deaf Dogs

<< Back to US map
Town: Cary, Illinois
Deaf dog: Kermit is a 1 year old Border Collie. Kermit is a double merle BC, from a product of known bad breeding. It's important for people to understand some breeders will trade the health of the pups for the financial gain and gamble of a fully facultied high white dog. Kermit is also blind but as a rescue dog, he is the absolute *best*, funniest, comfortable and kind dog I have ever had the pleasure of caring for.
Human companions: Christine and Greg
Other pets: Blue, Border Collie, Ben, Pit X

Vala

Town: Dakota, Illinois
Deaf dog: Vala is a 2 year old. American Bulldog. I heard about her from a friend. I always wanted an American Bulldog so I got her. She had a pretty tough time as a puppy before I got her at 8 weeks. I train and compete my dogs in obedeince, rally and agility, and was surprised to find that she is the smartest dog I have every trained. I'm the one who needs to learn more to communicate with her better. I'm planning on showing her in agility, obedience and rally competitions. I also would like to get a TDI on her as well. She's such a good dog and loves everyone and any animal. People that have seen her are surprised to find out that she's deaf.
Human companions: Karen
Other pets: 4 other dogs, 4 cats (one is her buddy).

Town: Saint Charles, Illinois
Deaf dog: Coconut is a 4 month old Pyrenees mix. Coconut is a dancing queen! She loves to chew her toys and follow her
humans around the house. She loves playing in the yard and with the neighborhood kids, and she is just discovering her "woof." She is quickly mastering her first few signs. She is smart and always happy & friendly, and she loves to sleep with
her paws to the sky.

Mr. Mojo Risson

Town: Scott air force base, Illinois
Deaf dog: Mr. Mojo Risson is a 2 year old Dogo Argentino. Our boy was a rescue from the St. Louis humane society, we pretty much stole him! Mojo is our first deaf dog and now because of him being so awesome my Wife and I only want to adopt deaf dogs. He currently knows 10 signs and we hope to expand his knowledge. Mr. Mojo Risson is by far the coolest dog I've ever encountered. Please do not let deafness be the deciding factor in adoption.
Human companions: Jimmy and Danielle

Gracie

Town: Oswego, Illinois
Deaf dog: Gracie is a 3 year old Boston Terrier. When I purchased Gracie from a pet store, I did not know she was deaf. It took about a week to figure out she couldn't hear. We have since had her take the BAER test which confirmed that she was deaf. Gracie is now 3 years old and I couldn't imagine life without her. She's my unconditional love in my life.
Human companions: Rebecca and Gracie's "Grandparents"

Town: Chicago, Illinois
Deaf dog: Dottie is a 3 year old American Staffordshire Terrier. Dottie is the most unusual dog I have ever met. She is incredibly intuitive and pays very close attention to gestures and body language. While she can be stubborn, she is goofy and sweet! She loves to play and is just one of the very best additions to my family I could have imagined!

Town: Belvidere, Illinois
Deaf dog: Chloe is a 1 year old Australian Shepherd. Anyone that thinks deafness is a handicap doesn't know our Chloe. She is currently in obedience class and should have her CGC title in a couple of weeks. We lost a loved pet in January and after 3 weeks I had to have another dog. After searching the internet for a breed and a breeder we found Chloe. The breeder told us she thought that Chloe was hearing impaired because of too much white but you really couldn't tell because of the way she reacted with all the other pups. After some sound testing at home, banging pots and a dog whistle, we discovered that she really didn't hear anything at all. Although we have only had her for 7 months, I can tell you, we will probably always have a deaf dog. Three months after we brought Chloe home, we adopted a hearing companion for her from Aussie Rescue. Also, a good choice. Narrie was a wonderful addition to our family.
Human companions: Adam & Penny
Other pets: Narrie a 2 year male Aussie from rescue

Hammer

Town: Rushville, Illinois
Deaf dog: Hammer is a 2 year old Great Dane. We didn't know Hammer was deaf, when we bought him. I'm so happy that we did buy him. We are so lucky to have him. Everyday he does something to tickle us. He is always trying to talk. He loves to run and down the creek with his brother, Ace. He will stalk, and pounce on him too. I picked him because, of his color. He is white with brindle spots, and two blue eyes. But one eye changed to brown. We have four Great Danes, they are all special in their own big way.
Human companions: Cindy
Other pets: Our other Danes and some Horses

Mr Dexter D. Dogg

Town: Bartlett, Illinois
Deaf dog: Mr Dexter D. Dogg is a 1 year old Dalmatian. He is is a bundle of pure puppy energy. He is suspected of being
dumped by a disreptuable breeder, and after a long time in crates and shelters, he made it to the Dalmatian Rescue of Illinois. He is presently learning his ASL signs from Miss Cleo T. Dogg using the Monkey See, Monkey Do method of training. He's just know gotten his adult teeth and is slowing down on the chewing of anything he can get his mouth on. He's an absolute delight to have, and is well on his way to being a lapdog. A most warm companion for me. And an occasional source of aggravation for Cleo. He has recently been neutered, a little earlier than planned. But we had to knock him out since they thought the nittle nipper had inhaled a wood chip. Entirely possible the way he is snuffling his way into developing a map of his surrournings. He's also a source of amuselment, especially around any large white object. Other Dals and white furry dogs intrigue him. White AMerican Egrets on the pond mesmorize him. And white real estate Open House signs scare the bejeebees out of him! He is my forth deaf Dalmatian, I don't know why anyone would possible want a hearing dog. It is so nice to unload the car while a deaf dog slumbers upstairs in their bed! They may be extra work, but the result is having a most devoted and attentive pet.
Human companions: Mark
Other pets: Miss Cleo T. Dogg (also deaf) and one very cranky old fish that eats any new fish I try to add to the tank.

Mouse

Town: Schaumburg, Illinois
Deaf dog: Mouse is a 1 year old Great Dane. We got Mouse from a breeder (countryboygreatdane) in Alabama. I searched the web looking for Dane puppies as we knew we would be losing our Mastiff/Rott mix to cancer soon. I saw her face and kept going back to her picture day after day. Then we made the decision to bring her home. We found out after we had her home she was deaf and we now are faced with Persistent Right Aortic Arch Surgery tomorrow, but we still wouldnt trade her for the world.
Human companions: John, Shelle, Kaleb, Carsyn, Noah and Cassidy
Other pets: Meeko our cat

Town: Cortland, Illinois
Deaf dog: Morgan is a 3 year old Red Nose Pit Bull. My husband and I rescued Morgan from a family who could not care for her. They thought she was too snippy. She was only 8 weeks old when we took her in and have never regreted it for a second. After about 6 months we realized that she could not hear a thing because she would not respond to her name or a whistle, so we learned to use hand signals for commands and she caught on fast. She is awesome with our young kids and very loving.
Human companions: Kari and Husband
Other pets: one Cat and a Irish Terrier Puppy

Yeti

Town: Arlington Heights, Illinois
Deaf dog: Yeti is a 4 month old Great Dane. Yeti was the "runt" of the litter of Dane pups I looked at as a companion, and playmate for my Dane/Lab mix Chena... but this sweet boy stole my heart right away with his kisses and cuddles with Mama. He definitely benefits from having 18 month old Chena to play with and picked up potty training within 6 weeks (he was 8 weeks when he picked us) and responds to basic hand commands to sit, lay down, and sometimes "watch me..." Hey- he is still learning! I am so in love with this boy's spirit!!!
Human companions: Cher and Matt
Other pets: Chena, a Great Dane/Lab mix

Cracker

Town: Poplar Grove, Illinois
Deaf dog: Cracker is a 4 month old Boxer. Cracker is new to our family. He has been with us for only 2 weeks now. He was abandoned at a shelter in Wisconsin, therefore we do not know his exact age. We were told that he was 10 weeks but now thing he could be 4 months because he is now losing his puppy teeth. He does hear some tones or very loud noises but otherwise is completely deaf. In his first week here he has learned the sit and come command and is doing great at his potty training. Who ever says that a deaf dog cannot learn is merely someone who cannot teach.
Human companions: Steve & Adreane
Other pets: We have another Boxer dog named Lexie and a cat named Leo

Town: White Heath, Illinois
Deaf dog: P.T. is a 1.5 year old White Boxer. P.T. came home with Zoey (her sister) and on puppy pick-up day from the breeder. The day before they found out she was deaf and the family didn't want her anymore. On the way to get Zoey (about a 2 hour drive) I had been thinking we could be her temporary home until a suitable arrangement could be made. Well, she and Zoey had other ideas in mind. Not to mention, we have two other Boxers 5.5 & 4 years old who adored their new little buddies. Long story short, I told my husband she needed a name and his response was why, she won't hear it? No, you're right, but the others will and we'll give her a sign. He came up with P.T. (Part-Timer). Everyone jokes she should be F.T. (Full-Timer) now. P.T. and Zoey already knew she was right were she belonged. P.T. knows numerous hand signals and she is one smart cookie. All four go by both hand and voice commands (plus facial expressions). She takes visual cues from the other dogs too, however, her nose is very in tune with her surroundings (other animals and food!) Right away she learned to sleep against Gabby's muzzle (Gabby alerts all into action). She took visual cues from Pablo our white male and on her very first day figured out how to go out the dog door! Needless to say, Gabby nosed her through because she was so small. Then from Zoey, her best friend and sister P.T. figured out immediately to sleep with one paw over your favorite toy, someone may sneak it away while you nap. She adores my husband and he adores her. While he works on home projects she figured out stealing his tools will get all of his attention in a great race chase game. Or for him it is hide and seek while she watches the show. She sneaks into his favorite chair and gets away with it. As for myself, I quietly fell for her at age 2 days. When the puppy arrival photos were emailed and I had inquired about her right away. My husband had already picked Zoey but P.T. had been spoken for. So, I watched her grow with her litter mates over the next 8 weeks and as I said, long story short, I have loved her from the moment I set eyes on her. P.T.'s deafness didn't inhibit her loving spirit from speaking to my heart. I was asking for her to come home the day after she was born and she heard me. I occasionally foster other animals & P.T. does well with them. She is great with other dogs and children. She is an all-around great dog.
Human companions: Terry Allan, my husband; Brittany & Chad, our married daughter & her husband
Other pets: Gabby, 5.5 yr fawn brindle female; Pablo,4 yr white male; Zoey, 1.5 reverse bindle female (PT's sister) All boxers.

Roxie

Sable

Town: Pecatonica, Illinois
Deaf dog: Roxie is a 3.5 year old Australian Shepherd who I found on the ARPH web site and fell in love with her. I train and show her and she has her CGC and her Rally Novice title in APDT. She is beautiful, smart and a wiggle butt. I can't imagine not having her in my life.

Sable is a 13 yr old Golden Retriever that I raised for Leader Dogs for the Blind. She was released from their program and came back as a pet. She has her CGC and TDI and is so smart. She has lost her hearing now at the age of 13 years, but does therapy work and loves everyone. The world is here for her and she is here for the world. She is the best.

Human companions: Mikki and Jim
Other pets: 4 Greyhounds, 4 Chihuahua's (one blind) and 1 Aussie (with tail)

Jake and Ellie

Town: O'Fallon, Illinois
Deaf dog: Ellie is a 6 month old Boston Terrier. I was told at the time of adoption that Ellie may be "hard of hearing." She was in such filthy condition at the breeders that I had to have her. (I had put a deposit on her before we knew that she was deaf). The breeder offered to refund my money when I came back, but I am sure Ellie would have been put to sleep. I have one hearing Boston, Jake, and Ellie sleeps with her back against one of us so she won't be startled. She wakes from a sound sleep by smell and by assigning hand
commands to verbal commands, she has learned everything that Jake has. By keeping a bell attached to her collar, I can always find her in the house. If the bell has stopped ringing, she is typically doing something she shouldn't be. She is a little nervous around new people, but if she is allowed to initate the contact, she is great. If she is approached by a stranger, she will always keep a few feet of distance.
Human companions: John and DeAnn Mooney
Other pets: Jake

Snowball

Town: Chicago, Illinois
Deaf dog: Snowball is a 12 week old Sealyham Terrier/Bichon Frise. She is your average Pup, She is very happy, and I don't think she knows that she is deaf. how to better communicate with her.
Human companions: Bob, Judy, Joe, Sarah Tuytens
Other pets: Rusty, a Toy Poodle

Town: Lake in the Hills, Illinois
Deaf dog: Lily is a 3 year old Aussie. She was rescued from a bad breeder who thought double merling was a good idea. Then the breeder wanted to put Lily and her blind sister down, so a local shelter, Pets in Need, saved them both. I saw a photo of Lily with her pink nose and white face on Good Friday and thought she was a lamb, so I adopted her the same day. I named her Lily because she is my Easter Lily. She is the best and sweetest dog ever! Super easy to train with hand signals. And, she just got her herding certificate. Lily is my baby! I will only ever own a special needs dog from now on. They have so much to give and it is so rewarding to love them!

Abydos and Me

Town: Chicago, Illinois
Deaf dog: Abydos is a 5 year old Saluki
Human companions: I adopted my Saluki from Saluki Tree of Life Rescue organization. I had seen an article about abused Saluki's in the Washington Post and began to search to find out what happened to them. My boy had been placed with a Vet in Dallas, TX, who herself had a love of Saluki's and welcomed Abydos into her home as a foster care for Saluki Tree of Life. After a month or more of communicating with the Vet we arranged with Saluki Tree of Life for me to adopt Abydos. I got him on Dec. 16, 2005 and he was 3 1/2 yrs old having been born on May 21, 2002. He is from the EleKtra Kennel in Alexandria, VA. I am an Episcopal Priest and live alone in the Rectory, so he is a perfect companion. He is a tri-color Saluki, which means he is mostly black with white and tan accents. It has not been hard for us to adjust given he is deaf. He was also abused, and that is the bigger hurdle. He is particularly leary of women, and of course all strangers freak him out. But as long as he is with me and knows where I am he is fine. He has made the Rectory his home and thinks it is more his than mine or the Parish's! He is a delight to take on vacation and everywhere we go people ask what is his breed and we get into a conversation about deaf & abused animals. My parish supports an Animal Ministry in our neighborhood, with a food cafe for the pets of lower income & elderly people. We call the program AniMeals. We have an annual Pet Blessing in October and a Pet Memorial in May. The whole neighborhood and their pets show up for these events. They even have a reception with food for the 4-legged and 2-legged. I may add a picture of that if I can. Or check out our Pet Blessing pictures under Photo's at our parish website: stpaulsbylake.org.

Dephne

Town: Rockford, Illinois
Deaf dog: Dephne is a 4 year old Rough Coat Jack Russell. She was a VERY difficult placement .. we got her from a WONDERFUL rescue person on http://www.deafdogs.org. Pat never gave up on her, as the months dragged on :-( . Finally, WE found her! Thanks to my son, who is deaf, and teaches out of state. He sent me the link and I visited deafogs and there she was :-). That was almost 3 years ago (today is 2007). She is a CHARMING little girl and I wish we'd had her since puppyhood. She missed out on lots of important development, being a pound puppy many times. She lives happily with her adopted sister, Dilly, another JRT, and has a love affair with her kitties.. a Siamese and two hairless Sphynx.
Human companions: Gary, Rachelle, Joe and Eric Holmberg
Other Pets: Dilly, another JRT and three cats.

Charlie and Me

Town: Woodstock, Illinois
Deaf dog: Charlie is a 5 year old Australian Cattle Dog/Sheltie. My dog is the greatest! I purchased him at a pet store, and I had no clue he was deaf. He was just the cutest thing I've ever seen. I had no intention of even buying a dog at that time. I just walked in the door of the store and fell in love. He's beautiful, smart and incredibly loving. I don't know what I'd do without him.

Town: Chicago, Illinois
Deaf dog: Pooch is a 13 year old Rat Terrier mix. Pooch was rescued at about 4 1/2 years old. He was hearing at the time, but became deaf in the last few years. Pooch is a real clown and he is always keeping us laughing. He loves clicker training and learning new tricks and has a pretty good repertoire of tricks. Pooch went for a dental procedure/tooth removal a few years ago and when he came back he was completely deaf-- could not hear anything at all. We did steroid treatment which helped him regain some hearing, however he is still hearing impaired. He can hear only loud noises and raised voices that are nearby. Luckily I had used hand signals when training him so I was still able to communicate with him. I have since taught him more hand signals of various types.
Human companions: Lizzi K
Other pets: Ginger, an 11 year old Golden Retriever and Sneakers, a 14? year old Tuxedo Cat.

Town: Chicago, Illinois
Deaf dog: Riley is a 6 month old Blue Heeler. Riley's a great boy. it is sometimes very frustrating to try to train and correct his behavior. But lack of hearing doesn't affect his enthusiasm, athleticism, or affection. he's a loving boy that has come into my life for a reason. If anyone would like to meet up at the Chicago Montrose dog beach I'd be more than happy to head out there with the pooches. Also getting in touch with people in this situation would be a great tool for me in training. He's got basic commands, but encouragement and advice would help me out.

Cleopatra

Town: Bartlett, Illinois
Deaf dog: Cleopatra is a 7 year old Dalmatian mix. Miss Cleo T. Dogg is the third deaf Dalmatian I've had. The original owners adopted her from the animal shelter, and she was adopted to her first family. A year later she came to us "incorrigable" and "maybe hard of hearing." In truth, she is stone cold deaf, and just wasn't sure what the rules were. When she was brough into the home, the second deaf Dalmatian was still alive, and it was a case of monkey see, monkey do. And Cleo was trained within a week. She's extremely visual/odor sensitive, spotting other dogs or rabbits blocks away. She's strong enough to pull a plow. She is every bit as sweet as the previous two deaf Dalmatians, and is a 65 pound lap dog.

Aurora

Town: Rockford Illinois
Deaf dog: Aurora is a 2 yr old Border Collie. We were fostering her for Great Lakes Border Collie rescue and she never left our home, we fell in LOVE with her. It was not known at first what was wrong with Aurora. She had a wobble to her head, one Vet said brain damage and she would not live to be a year old. The animal control wanted to put her down. Thank goodness the vet techs pleaded to save her and rescue took her in. The rescue spent much money for Cat scans, spinal taps and finally a hearing test. To find out she was deaf, her inner ears never devloped at birth. We did not know much about raising a deaf dog but started learnig everything we could. Our 3 other border collies really helped her by being able to read their body language. We thank God the rescue cared enough to save our little girl. She's just a joy.

C-Zar is a Harlequin Great Dane puppy who was born deaf. Sweet and funny, C-Zar is a joy.
Ice Man is an 8 month old congenitally deaf Great Dane. Ice Man was dumped at animal control by his uncaring breeder. He came to me with mange, whip, round and tape worms and a terrible case of kennel cough. He is very underweight and also has a hygroma (fluid filled sack) on his elbow from being crated on a hard surface 24 hours a day! But, despite all of this, he is the most loving and well behaved little boy a mama could ask for. He is grateful to have me as much as I him.

Lizzi Lu is also an Australian Shepherd, born 6/01. Her family says "Lizzi Lu came to us through Aussie Rescue. After Lexi adopted us, we knew we would add a playmate. Another deaf Aussie was our first and only choice. Lizzi Lu is the family clown. She can brighten the gloomiest of days. I think her daily goal is to give as many puppy kisses as possible and to be the receiver of at least 100 daily hugs/pets/pats. Lizzi and Lexi are the best of friends!"

Deaf dog: Luckytown's Pal Joey is an adult Dalmatian. "He is a wonderful friend. He gets along with everyone, and is an attention grabber in the obedience ring, making the hearing dogs and their handlers scramble for the other placements. Joey is a knock-out demonstration dog for 4-H obedience classes. He makes full use of his off days to go out on therapy visits. Joey is very popular with disadvantaged people who appreciate him even more because of his audible challenge. Joey is a very political dog, refusing to join the Dalmatian Club of America because of their ethical guideline requiring breeder/members to euthanize deaf puppies. In this same area, he is working on a plan to convince the AKC to change their rules and allow deaf dogs, as well as other disabilities such as only having 3 legs, to compete in performance events. Joey is a busy dog. Whenever you're in Chicagoland, look for Joey, because he'll be looking for you."

Deaf dog: Sugar Baby is a 6 month old Australian Cattle Dog. She was supposed to be a show dog, but to everyone's surprise, she flatlined her BAER test. Her "now" mommy, Tracy, was going to help the breeder find a home for her and guess what? You know what comes next.
SB is in private training now, but you'd hardly know it from the way she "listens." ACDs are often a tough breed to raise, and this girl is no exception. Unless you really know what to expect, please PASS UP that cute litte fuzzball you see in the pet store or on the neighbor's farm. But if you don't mind having a baby shark on speed, read up on the breed, batton the hatches, get a stout crate and leash and go for it!
We hope that someday our little girl will do agility and also some performing on stage and maybe in commercials. But for now, she's too busy destroying our furniture, zooming around the house and having temper tantrums in training sessions to even think about such advanced work. Sigh. But she is a cutie, and we love her dearly.

Deaf dog: Little Critter is a 3 month old Shih Tzu. Her family says "Two weeks ago we purchased a Shih Tzu puppy. Five days later, the breeder called and asked if we would be interested in a littermate for half price. The catch was, she was deaf. The breeder had sold her, but she had been returned when it was discovered that she was deaf. When we saw the puppy we fell in love! At first she was scared and shy, but she is already discovering that she is adored! It's only been five days, but she is learning fast and loves attention."

He was easier to train than our hearing dog. I am a devoted deaf dog owner and will never own anything but deaf dogs again. The advantages of a deaf dog are too long to list but this past 4th of july we enjoyed the fireworks together."

Deaf dog: "We rescued Tucker from a dog breeder that was going to put him to sleep because he was not a perfect double merle. We have a normal toy Collie who is 13yrs.old.There was a note at the vets office about the puppy. We went to see him and fell in love with him as soon as we saw him.He is a very handsome double merle Sheltie(or toy collie). We thought Shelties were smart because of Lindsey our older dog,but Tucker far surpasses her.Was house broken in 2-weeks and knows how to sit, lay down, speak, and roll-over all by hand commands. He has a zest for life and loves people. We didn't know what to expect because we never had a deaf dog before, but it has been the best reward for us and its awesome to see how much love he has for us.Deaf dogs make up for there deafness by heightening their other senses and ours seems to be especially smart and easy to train. We would encourage anyone who loves dogs to give a deaf dog a chance!Having Lindsey helps with his training and he watches everything she does. Also we have a cat and its funny because when she hisses at him he can't hear her so he is not afraid of her.She swats at him and he swats her back it's hysterical."

Deaf dog: Gracie is a 3 year old Lab/Shepard Mix. Her Mom says, "Gracie has been a member of our family for only two months. We adopted her from Save-A-Pet Animal Shelter in Grayslake, Illinois where she had been for 7 months. She was originally found as a stray. The cause of her deafness if unknown. We were attracted to her because despite her deafness, she is a very happy, playful loving dog. We just started obedience school with Gracie but I think she'll do extremely well. In addition to her deafness, she has a balance problem apparently coming from an inner ear problem and tends to walk in circles and tilt her head. All of her "problems" should make her cuter to us!"

"He is such a happy, loving, playful, intelligent boy. He loves treats and snuggling.
"I had expected training to take longer, but it hasn't. Infact, he learned the sit sign in 15 minutes, the down in 15 minutes, come sign after a few times (less than 15 min), and all when he was less than 11 weeks old! He has already learned all I know, so I'm brushing up on more signs.

Rennie
Rennie
Town: Carpentersville, Illinois
Deaf dog: Rennie is a 6 month old double merle Sheltie. "Hi, my name is Rennie. I think I am God's gift to Earth. I LOVE EVERY ONE: dogs, cats, people, moving vehicles, you name it. In fact, I get offended when people don't stop to pet me or annoyed that my owner doesn't let me play with all the 80+ lb. dogs I see! My owner plucked me out of the depths of Red Rock, Texas. This is probably a good thing since I was sent without food or medical papers and had to go through a lot of unnecessary tests to make sure I was OK. I love to snatch the toilet paper from the roll or steal shoes. I am lucky that my owner plays with me constantly and takes me for lots of walks even though I live in a townhouse. For the most part, I have free reign in the house although I do get into trouble once in awhile. We train everyday when we go for walks. My owner worked with a deaf person once so has some experience with sign language. She also has a coworker who participates in agility so I've learned obedience skills too. Overall I am a good boy with lots of love to give. Everyone who meets me thinks I am cute...and I am."

Deaf dog: Sugar is a 9 month old Boxer. "Sugar was born to my female. She was 1 of 8. At 6 weeks we thought, boy what a brave little girl. At 8 weeks as she chased lawnmovers, weed eaters and tractors, we realized this pup can't hear! We then realized this was the one we would keep. We live in the country but had to build a fence. At 12 weeks she learned how to open the gate! she is all ears and eyes! house broke at 9 weeks. Sugar is one of the smartest dogs I have ever owned. She knows many tricks that alot of friends can't get their hearing dogs to do. She does not like being alone. she is always with her mommy or her human family. She likes to touch us when she's sleeping. She thinks she's a great watch dog, she barks at the door with her mommy. She loves to groom everyone. She hold her mom's head down and licks ears, head, even the inside of her mouth! She does not like doors shut with anybody behind them. She can open all of our doors except the round door knob type. The only time we think about her being deaf is when we want to yell to her to get off the counter! Her deafness is not a handicap, it makes her who she is - which is our sweet little angel butt. Her sense of smell and sight is unbelievable. She can smell a candy bar from the back room and be on your lap before the wrapper is all the way off!"

Boo
Boo
Town: Gillespie, Illinois
Deaf dog: "Our family has a purebred white Boxer named "Boo". He will be 2 years on on 12-16-04. We got him right after he was weaned from a family that just had a litter of 8 pups. We didn't know he was deaf until the car ride on the way home, but didn't care cause we weren't taking him back! He's very smart and incredibly spoiled and has slept with my husband and I since the day we brought him home. You really wouldn't know he's deaf because he's so observant. He stays very close by both my husband and I and follows us everywhere and does not like to be alone. He does two really funny things. If you don't pay enough attention to him after you have been gone he will put his head up in the air and howl at you! He also does what I call the "psycho run" when you let him back in the house sometimes. He will run like crazy from one room to another and jumping off the sofa, etc. It's truly a hilarious thing to watch! You just need to plaster yourself against the wall and let him go.LOL He's the sweetest and most calm dog I have ever had before and is so loved and spoiled. I would take another deaf dog in a minute! I am so partial to white Boxers now, and that is all I want from now on. I'd take another baby right now! :-)"

She has only been with us a few short weeks, but is smart as a whip. She has already learned signs for sit, lie down, stay, and come. We are also using a vibrating collar to get her attention at times. She is a sweet and funny dog who fits in well and adds a lot to our lives."
