Scarlet
|
Town: Atlanta, Georgia
Deaf dogs: Scarlet is a very energetic and loving Dalmatian
pup. Her favorite activity is playing ball. She loves cats, and
of course people. "She frequently licks our 17 y/o cat who
just seems resigned to it. Scarlet "talks," a lot. She talks to
get our attention, when she's annoyed with us, wants us to play
ball, or whatever. We took Scarlet from some people who intended
to euthanize her because of her deafness. She is no more trouble,
and really no different from any other dog. She is a wonderful addition
to our family. "
Update 8/12/11: Even at 10 years of
age, Scarlett is still a very energetic and loving Dalmatian, though
she can get a bit testy if provoked; a hazard of the abuse many
deaf dogs face, and she was not spared. Apparently until she was
diagnosed as being deaf, it was assumed that she was stupid; they
were certainly wrong about that! Her favorite activity has changed
from laying ball to stealing the most comfortable seat wherever
my partner and I are in the house, but shift happens and we're all
a bit older. She loves her moms and thinks it's great fun to chase
her siblings. After living in Philadelphia for the past couple of
years, she's thrilled to be back down south where the weather is
easier on her bones.
Human companions: Khiki and Samantha, Khiki's significant
other and Scarlet's other mom.
Other pets: Romeo, Maeve, Belle and
4 week old Johnny; 3 hearing cats

Suki
|
Town: Dallas, Georgia
Deaf dog: Suki is our sweet two year old Jack Russell Terrier.
The minute we met her, we were in love because of her solid white
color and "calmness" she displayed at the initial meeting.
It's amazing how much has changed in the 1 year, 11 months we have
had her! When we found out Suki was deaf, we were devastated, but
our trainer, Anna reassured us that we could give her a great life
so we kept her. She knows so many tricks now and her love of life
keeps us going as well. Suki loves her 2 brothers and they help
"guide" and "teach" her the dog stuff we can't
teach. We also found out Suki was epileptic at 1 year old, but nothing
has stopped her. She LOVES balls and chasing toys and always keeps
us on our toes. She will lick anyone to death once she meets them!
I wouldn't change anything about her :)

Town: Jeusp, Georgia
Deaf dog: Angus Jones is a 14 month old French Bulldog. We
picked out deaf toilet paper terror as a pup not knowing he was
deaf. Now ashamed, I share this for people now in our shoes for
we too turned to this website for guidance, we cried our eyes out
deciding what was best for the pup, our new marriage, my own health
problems and selfishly scared of not knowing what to do for a deaf
dog. In the end we concluded: we picked the pup, he didn't pick
us and it was the perfect decision! The ride hasn't been easy but
it definitely hasn't been the deafness either. We have ran into
It's almost like we forget about the deafness. He doesn't do the
most impressive tricks or mind very well (bulldog, he knows the
signs), but he has the most intoxicating spirit about him I have
ever seen in a dog and would not trade it for anything. He absolutely
loves life and we absolutely love him.

Bird
|
Town: Kennesaw, Georgia
Deaf dog: Bird is a 6 year old Dalmatian mix. I got 'Bird'
in 2005 from a shelter, she was almost 1.5 years and she had been
in there for over 4 months! They never told me she was deaf, just
thought it would take a while for her to learn a new name and basic
obedience skills. I found out about a week later when she didn't
budge when a door slammed! She is the light of my life though! She
is quite a handful and requires more work and attention than a dog
that can hear, but I love her so much. She loves to get bones and
hide them in couch cushions. I recently moved and packed up the
couch and found 5 bones in it!! She loves chasing shadows, playing
with tennis balls, eating cheweez and having me chase her down the
stairs. She is a CRAZY dog!!

solid white. Their LOSS! She is my baby and smart! I couldn't imagine
life without her!!!!

Onyx, Mya and family
|
Town: Powder Springs, Georgia
Deaf dog: Mya Calway is a 1 year old Pitbull. We found our
Mya on the MSPCA Nevin's Farm website. We went to meet her several
times and were a bit weary of adopting a deaf pit bull. Friends
and family advised it was a bad idea because she was a "dangerous
breed" and her deafness would put her in a chronic state of
defensiveness. Fortunately my husband and I didn't listen to all
the pessimists in our lives. We decided to "foster-to-adopt"
and brought her home with us. It was clear after the first day with
her that there wasn't a chance we were not going to keep her. We
officially adopted Mya in October of 2008 after a long two months
of visiting her at the shelter. Mya is an amazing dog!! As a family
we have had a lot of foster dogs come through our home and even
though she is deaf Mya has been the fastest learner out of all of
them. Mya is one of the most intuitive dogs I've ever met. She is
very sensitive to people's emotions, and is first to jump in your
lap if you're expressing a negative emotion. No one can ever tell
she is deaf. She does more tricks then our hearing dog and responds
better too. She knows all her hand commands well, and despite having
a thick stubborn streak, she's very well behaved. Mya now spends
her days sunbathing, chasing tennis balls, taking runs, and harassing
her canine sibling. She gets along with everyone she meets, canine
or human. Mya has enriched our lives and we are so happy to have
found such an amazing companion.

Town: Marietta, Georgia
Deaf dog: Bella is a 5 month old Pitbull. Bella is the joy
of our lives, we got her from my daughter whose dogs had
puppies. I walked in among them and Bella chose me. I had decided
that dogs always choose us, not that we choose them. So which ever
puppy came to me and wanted me, that is the one I chose. She is
sweet and smart. She knows only a few signs so far, but our trainer
is helping us teach her.

Harper

Deaf dog: Harper is a 1 year old Great Dane. Harper was recued
when he was 9 weeks old from a Chihuahua breeder who was going to
put him down. Harper was only 6 pounds, and was living on tiny breed
dog food. The breeder knew Harper was deaf and assumed that he was
blind...due to his icey blue eyes...in fact Harper can see fantastically.
Harper is the goofiest dog I have ever owned...and my life hasn't
been dull since bringing him into my home!

Sydney
|
Town: Norcross, Georgia
Deaf dog: Sydney, a 10 month old Australian Cattle Dog, says:
"My family found me at a local SPCA when I was 4 months old.
They didn't know I was deaf, however, I was so sweet, I sold them
on me. I don't think they have seen any difference in me, because
I have no idea I can't hear. Since then I have graduated from puppy
training class and I am currently enrolled in basic obedience class.
I love to play ball anytime, anywhere. When I wake up I grab a ball
and put it at my dad's feet. I could do this all day. I plan on
continuing to learn and prove that I can't be limited by my deafness."

Took me a couple of weeks to realize the poor guy was deaf. He's
