Bijou

Town: Ladignac le Long, France
Deaf dog: Bijou is an 11 week old Labrador/cross who we adopted from a couple who had adopted a dog from a rescue centre only to find that she was pregnant. We have two other hearing dogs and didn't find out Bijou was deaf until we had had her for 2 weeks. We noticed she wasn't learning her name and biting the children excessively hard even when they screamed. After a few homemade tests we realized she is completely deaf. I searched the web to get as much info as I could and now we are progressing with homemade signs. It is very rewarding when she responds to a sign. We love her to bits as do our other two dogs.
UPDATE 9/16/02 Bijou, is now 5months old and still growing fast! She knows 8 signs really well. We are in the process of getting her used to going out for a walk on her own on the lead. She was very nervous at first but is getting the hang of it and although her tail only wags when we get home it isn't tucked in between her legs now. Her favourite game is tag with the other two, Belle & Daisy, they have a massive garden and fields to run around in so she doesn't miss out on the fun even if walkies has to be on the lead for her.

I took the test in Maison-alfort (Paris) this week... She's totally deaf... but totally cool and friendly...She's never afraid, wants to know what's happenning all the time and meet all the other dogs, children and people! I created some signs to communicate with her"
