Florida Deaf Dogs

<< Back to FL map
Town: Cantonment, Florida
Deaf dog: Zoe is a 2 year old Catahoula/Pit Bull Mix. My fiance' and I adopted Zoe from a local shelter. I originally found her on petfinder. She was being fostered by one of the shelter employees. Zoe didn't get along with our other dog Marcuss at first. She was/is very food aggressive with other dogs and they got in a couple fights. Once I worked them through that phase they got along great. One thing I love love love about Zoe is how much she loves to cuddle. Bed time is her favorite time of day, and she just loves to sleep and cuddle with us. I am still working with her on some dog aggression, but she is coming along great!! I hope to eventually get her a akc canine good citizen award because she is part Pitt. That doesn't matter to us, but the good citizen title could
reassure other people.
Human companions: Sarah and David
Other pets: One other dog Marcuss, a Lab/Beagle mix

Town: Pensacola, Florida
Deaf dog: Justin is a 9 month old Blue Heeler. I bought him from a breeder in Az to help with my breeding program. He was a very happy puppy, and very energetic. After having him for about a week I
noticed he did not respond to my voice, or anything around him. I started working with him to test if he was hard of hearing, and come to find out he was born completly deaf. He is very attentive, and watches me where ever I go. I do work him on livestock, using hand gestures, and he is wonderful! If anyone has trouble with their dogs, and needs any help please let me know.

Brody

Town: Pensacola, Florida
Deaf dog: Brody is an 11 month old Boston Terrier. He is the one spunky little dude. He loves his Boston Terrier sister, Remmy, and uses her ears to help him. He likes to play with stuffed animals, ice cubes, and twigs. Being deaf doesn't seem to bother him other than being scared of the dark. He knows many signs, tricks, and is one smart cookie! He was so smart that we didn't realize he was deaf until a couple months ago and then a vet confirmed it. We realized he never responded to his name or other words, he would sleep through anything, and often be in his own little world. He is more clingy than our other dog but I enjoy it. He is a cuddly monster!
Human companions: Tiff Evans and Daddy Rick
Other pets: Remmy-6 month old Boston Terrier, Shadow-7 year old cat and Clyde-14 year old cat

Town: Tallahassee, Florida
Deaf dog: Clyde is a 2 year old American Pit Bull Terrier. Clyde is a lovable 70+ pound puppy that due to some higer power found us just in the nick of time. Around May-July of 2006 late at night our other 5 hearing dogs went nuts, we looked out the window and there was the skinniest brown dog cowering near the dog food bowl, we turned on the porch light and he disapeared. Early the next morning we noticed the dog was still on the property so my dad somehow got the dog in the the large dog yard for further inspection, my mother and Ii went out to look at the dog and discovered what we thought was a bait dog used in dog fights. He broke our hearts he was so skinny you could see every knob on his spine and every rib, we also discovered he was crawling with fleas. my mother and I decided even if the dog tries to eat us we have to do something, slowly I entered the pen and approached him he was so weak he didn't even bat and eye. We warmed water in the house and lovingly bathed him, he never moved. The flea dirt was so thick he felt like plastic and when the water was added it looked like we had slit his throat the water ran red with the flea dirt. Slowly we discovered he was white, and he was so anemic his gums were pure white he had no color. He had scratched so much his ears were bloody, and his testicals were covered in scabs from the fleas, how he survivied we will never know. he was not a bait dog thankfully just very abused. To make a long story short we fed him and took him to our vet and got him shots and ointments for his poor skin, on that visit he weighed 15lbs! the vet informed us he was most likely born deaf. That visit the vet staff named him Clyde (we have a Blue Heeler named Bonnie whom Clyde loves to harrass). Today Clyde is a healthy 70+ pound "puppy". he protects myself and my mother and currently we are attempting to train him, any tips are more than welcome, if Clyde cannot be trained he will have to be put down... I just can't bear the thought he's already been through so much. my family has a theory, that the higher power knows we cannot turn away an animal in need, you see we have 5 dogs and in my 23 years on earth we have NEVER bought a dog, each and every one finds its way to our home, either by car or on foot.
