Camdida

Clyde

Town: Port St. John, Florida
Deaf dog: Camdida is a 2 year old Australian Shepherd. Camdida originally came to me as a 5 week old foster and the cutest little white ball of fluff. She is a double-merle Australian Shepherd and because of this breeding she is completely blind and bilaterally deaf. When she was she was ready to find her new forever home I couldn't say no. She now has a forever home with me...and I'm so happy she's a part of my life. She is such a joy! I can't ask for a better personality than this special little girl. She has recently passed her tests and now is a certified therapy dog despite her disabilites. It's pretty amazing watching a special girl such as herself touch the hearts of everyone she meets.

Clyde is a 4 and 1/2 year old Australian Shepherd. Clyde is bilaterally deaf, but does seem to have good vision. He is
considered a double-merle. Mr. Clyde had a hard start to the first part of his life. He, along with his other Aussie friend, was turned into a county shelter. Due to his disability he was deemed unadoptable, but I really don't understand why. A wonderful private rescue pulled him from the shelter and that is where I met Mr. Clyde. He has such a goofy, loving personality and is always ready to greet everyone and anyone with the happiest smile on his face and the craziest Aussie wigglebutt. He is an amazing boy and is turning out to be quite the agility superstar thru American Sign Language.

Town: Orlando, Florida
Deaf dogs: Milo is a 1 year old American Bulldog. Milo's breeder didn't know what to do with him as he was their first experience with a deaf dog. We saw him one day and within 1 week, we had him at home. That was a year ago. He's the love of our lives!

Lilly

Town: Ft. Pierce, Florida
Deaf dog: Lilly is a 16 week old American Bulldog. I am a newly single mother to my beautiful, bouncy American Bulldog. I fell in love at first site, and after a couple weeks I knew immediately she was severely
impaired if not completely deaf. I am struggling and am working with two trainers. I need some assurance she will be okay!

Other Pets: Xena (Chiuahaha)

Snowey

Town: Ft. Pierce, Florida
Deaf dog: Snowey is a 3 year old American Pit Bull Terrier who was rescued from a snow storm in Ohio. Somebody left her in a crate in the snow storm to die. The dog warden came and picked her up. They were going to euthanize her, but Measle's Animal Rescue stepped in. She became a part of their rescue. I was asked by the director to foster her. I did, but fell in love with her and adopted her! She's very playful and howls when she wants to go outside. She's a very quick learner and loves to go on walks.

Athena

Town: Deltona, Florida
Deaf dogs:
Athena is a 1 and 1/2 year old albino Pit/Lab mix. We were at the pound looking for a sister for my other dog, Kitana. Athena was standing outside with her original owner. We went outside to pet her because she was gorgeous. The woman told us she was deaf and that she was completely trained with sign language. She said that it runs in Albino Pitts, but she was also a Hurricane Katrina puppy. So it's unsure if she was born deaf or something happened to her during the hurricane. We decided to take her home. The first day was difficult because I was worried she wouldn't get along with our first puppy. Besides one spat over a bone, they have gotten along wonderfully. Athena watches how Kitana reacts to sounds and has learned how to react with Kitana's reactions.
Human companion:
Rachael and Jim
Other pets:
Kitana is almost 6 months old and she is a Rhodesian Ridgeback/Blue Heeler mix

Town: Port St. Lucie, Florida
Deaf dogs: Roscoe is a 2 yr old Pitbull/Lab Mix.
I found him at the local pound. I was originally looking for a hearing pitbull puppy, but I fell in love with him. This is a dog who has been abused, left outside on a chain, and had horrendous things done to him. He had been dumped at the pound when a breeder found he was deaf as a puppy, and had been in and out of the pound since birth. I fell in love with him. he's an excitable sweet dog, who gets along perfectly with my mini daschund. He loves to play, explore, give kisses, and make your heart melt. His favorite pastime is chasing frogs :) He's a smart and mischevious little one- he uses his eyes a lot, and he, through observation, has learned how to open car doors, car windows, house doors, open the garage door. He loves looking in the mirror at his own reflection. When I got him 3 months ago, he knew NO LANGUAGE at all. He's learned about a dozen signs so far, and i m confident he'll keep learning quickly. He's already rescued me from being attacked by a stranger on the street, so its a myth that deaf dogs can't be guard dogs. I'll have Roscoe with me, forever. :-)

Sundown

Town: Orlando, Florida
Deaf dog: Sundown is a 1 year old Australian Shepherd. "We adopted "Sunny" from ARPH and he is truly a sweetheart. We picked him because we felt it he might have a hard time being adopted. We have another Aussie and love the breed. We were told when we got him that when happy he would wag all over. An understatement. He's an average teenager, hungry all the time, loves to play tug, and loves to irritate his new sister who is 9 years old."

Update11/5/07: We lost our 15 yrs old mixed breed cat shortly after initial entry, and very sadly we lost our precious Brownie (Sunny's sister) this past August after 14+ wonderful and blessed years. Although Sunny had some problems right after she passed, he is doing great now and is our baby. He has learned to sing which is delightful and we get to hear it when he is happy to see us. Sunny is now 6 years old.
Human companions: Jan and her husband Ron.

Camera Shy
Town: Palm Bay, Florida
Deaf dog: Jake is a 7 month old Australian Shepherd. "Special Agent 007 "Jake" is a very loving dog with the most beautiful blue eyes. He loves attention and in return gives more love back to you than you would expect. I adopted Jake from the New Leash on Life rescue. Jake saw me and waited for me to come to him and pet him, and when I did he, put his head on my shoulder and his paw on my hand and just looked at me as if to say, 'Well, partner, am I going home with you or what?' No matter where I go Jake is there with me and sleeps close to me at night.A very friendly and gentle dog, Jake is also very smart and a fast learner. Jake likes to sit on the float in our pool and enjoy the scenery. He also enjoys eating coconut, and playing tug-of-war with our German Shepherd. Jake is the sweetest and most wonderful dog."
Human companions: Sahar Rice, her husband John, and son Nick.
Other pets: Arrow, a German Shepherd.

Muffin The Intrepid
Muffin the Intrepid
Town: Orlando, Florida
Deaf dog: Muffin the Intrepid is a great example of the genetic disasters that can result from puppy mills. We rescued at 18mos. nearly dead of skin infection. He's survived life-long skin problems, raging bacterial infections that required the amputation of first one, then both of his ears (called "ear ablation"), and now he's a cancer survivor. Muffin has his Canine Good Citizen and is a certified Pet-Assisted Therapy Dog. He's learned to respond to about 36 signs so far (some ASL, some home-made). But he just doesn't ever give up. He's been deaf not quite 2 years -- it's different than a dog born deaf (not better or worse -- just 'different' because he HAD hearing and now is stone deaf). He has a huge affinity for children.
Human companions: 'Callie' and David
Other pets: Foxy the Mostlie Sheltie, Socks (a foster who just stays and stays) and Hootie the Talking Cockatiel
Email: callie@critturs.com
Or you can email Muffin at: muffin@critturs.com
Comment: I tend to rescue "special needs" dogs -- I have rheumatoid arthrtis myself, asthma and severe dermatitis and the dogs I help tend to have one of those problems (at least). I took Muffin because of his skin problems, and he earned the name "The Intrepid" simply because he's THE bravest animal I've ever known. He is truly "Muffin the Intrepid English Cocker Spaniel"

Cappuccino
Cappuccino
Town: Cocoa Beach, Florida
Deaf dog: "My family and I just brought Cappuccino home from the local humane society and did not know at that time she was deaf. Now we know and we love her that much more. She is very affectionate and playful and has been great with our two small children. It has not been any different than raising a hearing dog, except that she doesn't come when called. No big deal...we go to her! "
Human companions: Lisa & Kerry Waddle, Alyssa (3) & Buddy (1)
Other pets: Minnie Mouse, our family cat
