Deaf dog: Kratos is a 1 year old American Bulldog. Kratos is
the best dog we ever had gotten!!! We got him when he was 7 weeks
old from a breeder. When my boyfriend and I had gotten him, we kept
calling his name and talking to him...but he never responded. The
Vet finaly confirmed that he is indeed deaf. When we found this out,
we tried to find everything out that we could
about deaf dogs...and there really isn't much info out there. Kratos
is trained mostly on hand signals that Brad and I made up. We also
use a laser pointer as well. Kratos is the sweetest dog ever and is
very smart...he learned shake in one day!! We love him so much and
would never trade him for a dog that can hear!!
Human companions: Sabrina and Brad

Nikki
|
Town: Naples, Florida
Deaf dog: Nikki is a 3 year old beauty of unknown breed.
She is wonderfull. I adopted her from the pound, knowing she was
deaf. Too cute to let slip by. She is excellent with my cat and
people. She opened my eyes to handicapped dogs, and when she passes
(not looking forward to that day) I WILL be adopting another deaf
dog. I just wished people wouldn't throw them away because of their
disability. By far, she is the most obedient dog I have ever met,
and thankfully she is mine :)

Deaf dog: Mimi is a 3 year old Boston Terrier. Just because
they are deaf does not mean that they are any different. They love
and are every bit as energetic as all of the rest. I have 5 Boston
Terriers and Mimi by far is the most loving of all. My husband calls
her my shadow, everywhere I go Mimi is right beside me. I have 2
kids and other than a few simple modifications, like explaining
that under no circumstance is she to be let out by herself, which
we have an acre fenced in for the Bostons to play plus a doggie
door. Mimi understands hand commands and body language. It is so
funny when she gets scolded (which is less than never) She will
turn her head away and pretend she does not even see you! She is
the most special dog, I would not trade her for anything and I am
happy to have her. When we got her, we did not know that she was
deaf. It did not take long to figure it out though. It did not make
any difference. She was 6 weeks old when I got her and I own her
grandmother and her father. She follows their cues!

Town: Captiva, FL
Deaf dog: Closer to death than life, starved, filthy, matted-coat,
fragile, confused and afraid, When my wife first saw this emaciated
toy poodle at the local "pound",Sharon saw past the appalling appearance.
She saw a beautiful being, with a fierce desire to live and love.A
staff member explained the young dog's history. A distraught person
who reported the almost constant half bark, half screams of a distressed
dog, had called the authorities. When the officials arrived at the
empty house they discovered the desperate dog in the bottom of an
empty swimming pool, no water, no food and no shade from the southwest
Florida Summer sun. This rescued dog had been at the "pound" for one
day and the veterinarians were not sure she would survive. At the moment
Sharon was introduced to this wonderful animal, the dog wrapped her
front legs, as tightly as her weak muscle could, around Sharon's ankle.
Two spirits met and bonded in love. With medical care and grooming
she was as fresh as a daisy, and so Daisy came home to her new family.Daisy
was showered with loving acceptance and patience. During her first
visit to a private Vet, the Doc discovered her back knees were malformed.
Daisy had a peculiar behavior of walking while holding the top of
head tucked down low near the side of her paws. The vet suspected
neurological damage. When Daisy did not react to sounds the Vet confirmed
our observations of the obvious: Daisy was deaf. The Doc said malnutrition
was most likely the cause of her physical challenges.Sharon and I
committed to include Daisy into our lives. We sensed Daisy had a great
gift to give: the spirit of joyful aliveness.
Human companions: Sharon and family
