Daisy and Blue
Town: Washington, DC
Deaf dog: Daisy Pongo Nalla is an 8 year old Dalmatian. I rescued Daisy when she was 9 months old. Her previous owners did not want her when they learned she was deaf. A dog with large black spots, Daisy is very intelligent, easily excited, obedient and protective. She's the one who barks at the door when her hearing comrade, Blue, perks his ears. She loves to play with reflected light from flashlights, windows or any other glare. She smiles each time I get home, and each time she sees me after she wakes up. On signed commands, she sits, barks, circles, begs and plays dead. She understands also when I tell her its time to eat, walk, ride, sleep, or sign her name. Each time we go for long walks off-leash, she checks her surroundings for my location every minute or two.
Human companions: Margie English, I live with my sister. My dogs are also intimate with my parents and my brother.
Other pets: Blue George, a liver-spotted Dalmatian/Labrador mix

Bullwinkle

Town: Washington, DC
Deaf dog: Bullwinkle is a 2 and 1/2 year old AmericanBulldog/Pitbull mix. I got Bullwinkle at an animal shelter in Alexandria, VA in August of 2006. I had my ideal dog picked out in my mind and was just waiting for him to come along. I guess that just proves the old saying "Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans." Watching him bend his neck all the way backwards so he can still see what's going on behind him while you're scratching him under his chin was probably one of the more endearing things I'd ever seen a dog do. That and his big disqusting kisses. I was immediatley hooked. Nothing about Bullwinkle is what I thought I wanted and now that I have him I can't imagine having any other dog! I want to share my little story with people so they realize how rewarding and SMART deaf dogs can be. I've had ZERO problems communicating with him. Don't ever be afraid to give a deaf dog a chance!

Sassy
Sassy

Town: Washington, DC
Deaf dog: Sassy is a 1 year old Pit Bull. "A good friend of mine who lives in the Bronx, rescued this starving little girl after she was abandoned by people who moved out of a house and simply left her behind. My friend could not keep her so I volunteered to help her find a home. She is all white, with sad brown eyes and black freckles on her mouth. And she is deaf! We fell in love with this extremely sweet and beautiful baby! I look in her eyes and see her love every day! We are hers for keeps, she has a spot staked out on the bed (her head on the master's pillow). She is learning from our other dogs, and we have just started with a dog trainer, who is very special. Life is good!"
Human companions: Judy Niemyer and Tom McMillen
Other pets: Ritzy, Critter, Dimple, Mickey

Dempsey
Dempsey
Town: Washington, DC
Deaf dog: Jon and I are both students at Gallaudet University, the only university in the world for the Deaf, and use ASL to communicate. Jon is Deaf and wanted a deaf dog, preferably a Boxer. After some searching we finally found our cute little girl from a breeder in Conn. Dempsey is a very active and intelligent little dog. She is very attentive and intently watches our hands for signs that she recognizes, a list which is increasing at an impressive rate! She is a very playful pup and loves everyone she meets.
Human companions: Brett (myself) and Jon
Other pets: Rory (a 9 yr.old Blue Heeler/Border Collie mix), Jack (a good ol' Heinz 57), and Foster, our deaf cat (cause unknown) that isn't sure yet how he feels about his new playful little sister :-)
