California Deaf Dogs

<< Back to CA map
Town: Mountain View, California
Deaf dogs: Jingles is a 9 month old Jack Russell Mix & was adopted in Dec 2010 after I lost my 15 yr old Jack Russell 3 weeks earlier. When she came to us, we didn't know she was deaf. I wondered if anyone in the Mountain View area would like to do some playtime with her as she is not ready for the dog park just yet. She is very playful and needs a smaller dog to play with.

Brody and Pacey

Town: San Jose, California
Deaf dog: Pacey is a 2 year old Cattle Dog Mix. Pacey is a sweet cuddle-bug who thinks he is a 10 pound lap dog. We rescued
him when he was a few months old. He had been dumped and was wandering the streets of a nearby town. He responds well to hand signals and loves to play at the dog park.

Brody is a 10 month old Australian Shepherd. Brody is a wiggly ball of Aussie energy. Being deaf has not slowed him down
one bit! He loves to play with Pacey every morning and evening. We got Brody when we were looking for a companion for Pacey. Pacey chose Brody at an adoption event and they've been best friends ever since.

Human companion: Lindsay and Sarah
Other pets: 12 year old Yellow Lab

Town: San Jose, California
Deaf dog: Rocky is a 4 year old Chocolate Lab. We got Rocky at 6 months old from a home that was abusing him. We were unaware that he was deaf at the time of adoption, and just needed to get him out of his home. Already having experience in training search and rescue dogs, I decided I would try Rocky at human remains detection. HRD dogs tend to stay closer to the handler than wilderness search dogs. Rocky is now a certified human remains detection dog, and is a valuable member of
several search teams, and an asset for our Sheriff's office. Rocky's deafness is an absolute benefit as it keeps him focused on his job. He gets less distracted during a search. Rocky is a one of a kind search dog, and if I could give him his hearing back tomorrow I don't know if I would. We have a bond and closeness that I think would not be there if he was a hearing dog.
Human companion: Elise and Tim
Other pets: *Tater* Task Force 3 FEMA dog (in training) *Moose* Certified type 1 wilderness search and rescue dog
*Deuce* certified type 1 wilderness search and rescue dog *Lupin* Search dog in training.

In fact, Mel attended Sirius puppy classes, got her CGC and APDT Rally1 Obedience title in addition to becoming a Delta Society Pet Partner at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford. Mel has never required any special accommodations because of her hearing deficit or imperfect vision. She's a very capable dog and perfect just the way she is :)

Pan

Latigo

Town: San Jose, California
Deaf dog: Pan is a 2 year old Australian Cattle Dog (born 03/31/08) . Pan is such a sweetheart to everyone he meets. He keeps me laughing and has been an experience, since he was my first deaf dog. He was dropped off at a shelter by his backyard breeder (along with his 2 sisters) and taken in to a foster home all before 8 weeks. By 9 weeks, I adopted him and he hasn't left my side since. He loves the dirt and sleeping in my bed.

Latigo is a 1and 1/2 year old Australian Cattle Dog (born 10/21/08) . Latigo is an amazing little girl who has stolen everyones' hearts. She was born in a breeders house with a home already set up for her but when she was BAER tested it was determined she was bilaterally deaf. The home she was suppose to go to wanted a hearing dog so they could not take her. Her breeder posted the notification of her deafness on a cattle dog list and I had to contact her. Latigo came to me at 3 months and loves California!

Human companion: Tasha
Other pets: Horses, a pot-belly pig, chickens, a duck, cats, and other dogs.

Town: Morgan Hill, California
Deaf dogs: Queenie is a 11+ year old American Cattle dog. Queenie was an abused dog rescued from a puppy mill. She was so badly abused that we had to put food into her mouth for her to eat and use a syringe for water. We had to carry her outside to "potty" and then had to clean her up because she would not even stand up. She was "unadoptable" so we kept her. It took two years for her to run, hold up her tail and bark. My son, then 2 years old really is the one that rehabilitated her. He would sit with her for hours and just hold her and pet her. We are grateful every day for her. She was our first deaf dog.

Daisy is a 3 year old American Cattle dog. Daisy came up on an adoption site. We were looking for another dog, (really
a smaller dog) but when we saw her my son, (now 10) fell in love with her. After having one deaf dog we were unconcerned about having another. Daisy is very high energy, has the softest mouth and is loved by all of us. My two year old daughter
lays with her for naps. Daisy likes to lay very close to someone when she sleeps so that she knows when you get up. She responds to a light when it is time to come in at night and will play fetch forever. We use hand signals with her and she does great. Everyone that comes over constantly asks "Are you sure she's deaf? She is so responsive that people can't believe she is deaf.
Human companion: Tami, Joseph and Sammy
Other pets: Brandy, a Lab Chow mix, she is the hearing dog and rules the roost

Pukku
Pukku
Town: Ceres, California
Deaf dog: Pukku is a gorgeous blue merle Australian Shepherd. We adopted him in Aug. of 2001 from the North Bay Canine Rescue & Placement agency in Petaluma, Ca. Pukku is our 4th aussie. Our family is madly in love with the breed. Despite Pukku's deafness, he is the most wonderful animal anyone could have the pleasure of knowing. He is an absolute joy to be around because he is one very happy dog. Like all Australian Shepherds, Pukku is extremely intelligent as well as loveable. Also, he is soon to be a registered therapy dog! If you would like to see pictures of my wonderful doggy and read a little bit more about him, he has his own little corner of the web at: http://dogchow.com/yourdogPageDisplay.asp?PageId=pukku
Human companions: Teresa describes her family: "My mother is a special ed. teacher at a grammer school. My father is a traing manager at a major winery. My older sister that lives with us as of right now is also a special ed. teacher. She also specializes in working with deaf and hard of hearing children. I am a high school student and aspiring jazz musician (but if that doesn't work out I would like to work at either Sea World of San Diego or the San Diego Wildlife Park) =)"

Camera shy Town: San Jose, California
Deaf dog: We have been owned by Dolly (Australian Shepherd Blue Merle) ever since she was 8 weeks old. We rescued her from the Oakland SPCA through Hop Along, She has been the joy of our lives ever since. We started taking her to training classes at the Santa Clara Fairground when she was three months old on Wednesday nights. We have learned a lot from the wonderful instructors several of them have experience with deaf dogs. We are teaching her hand signals and she is teaching us that having a handicap does not limit almost anything that she wants to do. Our next class will begin on the 14th of Aug, 2002 and will be a C.G.C. class. We have just begun and love every minute of it.
Human companion: Joyce and Gene
Other pets: Three cats: Samantha, Sunny & Cheesy.

Kisses
Kisses at 14
Town: Modesto, California
Deaf dog: Kisses (American Cocker Spaniel) is a wonderful dog. She will chase a tennis ball with energizer bunny enthusiasm. I rescued her from the sister of a co-worker who was going to put her in the pound because they were moving and didn't want to travel across state with a dog. Some people! She learned obedience hand signals when she could hear and I have used those and added a few more. She now has a wheelchair because her back legs have gone out on her. Getting old is a bummer! But she is still enjoying chasing the ball! She is wonderful to have around. She follows me everywhere and goes everywhere with me. She is definitely a Mommy's dog. She is very affectionate and lives up to her name by giving out lots and lots of kisses.
Human companions: Cyndi, Balzrette and David
Other pets: Kisses rules the house over my 3 yr old male American Staffordshire Terrier, Ares and my 3.5 yr old pit bull (shelter rescue) Doesha. And she tolerates the cat, Noge.

Wednesday
Wednesday
Town: Gilroy, California
Deaf dog: Wednesday is well-adjusted 4 1/2 year old. She relies on her Brother and Sister Boxer siblings. She can be a handful at times when she has issues with separation anxiety, but that is normal. We love her like she was our child and we are very glad to have her as a part of our family. It has been 4 years adjusting, at first the separation anxiety was really bad and she would jump the 8 foot fence to look for us.. Thank God she has out grown that problem. Her Boxer siblings keep her busy and she only gets out of control if we leave her at home for more than 6 hours. I go home for Lunch each day and that really helps her. She is very needy for attention and does tend to whimper when her Dad leaves in the morning for work, but a quick tap and hand signal gets her up in bed and snuggly happy again. I think the two other dogs have really helped in training her. She can shake, sit, lay down, fetch/return and knows "no". So that is pretty good. We use a lot of hand signals for her and use them with our hearing dogs too. She is our Baby girl....
Human companions: Daniel, Rebecca and Derek
Other pets: Two other hearing Boxers. She also has two Kitties that have been around since they were only a couple days old. She loves them and treats them like her family.

Camera Shy
Town: San Jose, California
Deaf dog: Dotty is an 11 week old Great Dane. "We bought her from breeder, and we were unaware of the risk of deafness with a white, blue eyed dane until after we got her. She was a cuddle bug of 5-1/2 weeks when we got her - skinny, skinny because her mom ran out of milk and her 'brother' was FAT! She bonded so easily with us all and is so feminine looking with her pink nose and blue eyes."
Human companions: Cindi G.
Other pets: Hank, a 5 year old black male Pug.
Email: crendrag@yahoo.com

Camera Shy
Town: Campbell, California
Deaf dog: Tyson is a 8 week old Boxer. "Tyson is such a sweet boy. We got him 2 weeks ago and I am so in love with him. We got him from a family that owned 2 boxers and the female had an accidental pregnancy. They did not know he was deaf, they just thought he was a heavy sleeper. It didn't take us long to figure out he was deaf, but it doesn't matter to us. We know he will just take a little while longer to train than a hearing dog, and we are up for the challenge!"
Human companions: Nicholas and Katrina
Other pets: Humbolt are cat we rescued from a rest stop in Humbolt County CA
