Miss Piggy
| Town: San Francisco,
California
Deaf dog: Miss Piggy is a 3 month old French Bulldog.
Living in the city, we knew that a French Bulldog was the breed for
us. They were bred as apartment dogs, and just have the best personalities.
When we saw a picture of Piggy, we knew she was ours. After 3 weeks
of anticipating her arrival, we found out that she was deaf. We were
faced with the decision to still get her, or choose another from the
litter. Immediately we did research and found a lot of useful information
(this website included) on how deaf dogs can be well-adjusted and
great pets. We were in love with her and didn't care about her handicap.
We've now had Piggy for a month and she is the funniest, happiest,
and most well-adjusted puppy we have ever encountered. She has the
most outgoing and loving personality with anyone or creature she comes
across. Her favorite things include food, giving kisses, food, chasing
leaves, food, her stuffed frog, food, going for walks in the Presidio,
food, sleep, and she loves just loves food! We don't know how we lived
without her!

Town: Santa Cruz, California
Deaf dog: Lucy Lu is a 2 year old American Bulldog.
Last year I decided that I was finally in a place (to live) where
I could adopt a dog. I really wanted a dog that *needed* a home.
I signed up with a couple of rescue sites with the breeds I was
interested in and no one got back to me. So I began looking on craigslist.org
and this is where I found Lucy. She is beautiful and well I just
knew she was the one for me when I saw her. Her temperment is playful
yet stubborn. Man does she love cat poo. I can't keep her away from
it. It's our longest standing fight. She loves other dogs - hasn't
met a dog she didn't like yet. People are scary though. She has
a boyfriend - a male Boxer that absolutely loves her. We met this
dog via a friend. Having a hearing dog around is a huge help.
Human companions: Briya Serrano and lots of close
friends who have become very close to her as well.

Town: Redwood
City, California
Deaf dog: Shasta is a10 week old Lab/Australian Shepherd
Mix. She is incredible. She is white with two ice blue eyes. Body
just like a pure bred lab. Smart as a whip, funny as can be and more
than anything, the most loving dog I've ever had. I adopted her from
a very poorly run humane society in Oregon that had a PARVO epidemic
and didn't know it until I had driven Shasta back to San Francisco.
She luckily overcame the parvo and we found she was deaf too. My goal
is to train her and see if I can make her a successful waterfowl hunting
dog. Deaf pupppies are like pre-mature babies, they are gifts from
heaven. It's a very special and deep relationship.

Tripper

Town: San
Francisco, California
Deaf dog: Tripp was my first Dane as well as my first
deaf dog. He was very special. I have now learned that deaf dogs and
their owners have a bond different from that of their other dogs.
Tripp was so goofy and sweet! He had no idea he was any different
from any other dog! He died a young man, but all who met him, loved
him! Tripper, you are missed!

Bill

Ted
|
Town: Santa Cruz, California
Deaf dog: Bill and Ted are 4 year old Australian
Shepherds. Both were brought to a veterinary teaching facility by
their breeder at 8 weeks of age. Rather than euthanizing them, they
were used in teaching labs once a week. I took them home at 3 years
of age after I met them, determined to find them a home, and here
they still are :) They are the most loving boys I've met and smart
as heck!!! They play hide and seek with me when it's time to go
to bed. and they LOVE the beach!!! Ted can't see too well either
so he gets mixed up when joggers pass by and starts to follow them
instead. His big brother Bill usually goes to get him and bring
him back to us.
Human companions: Debra D'Angelo
Other pets: Taz & Sydney are both Australian
Cattle Dogs

Bleu |
Town: San Mateo,
California
Deaf dog: "We simply love Bleu. He is the happiest
dog I've ever had, and there have been dogs in my life since I was
born. After reading "Amazing Gracie" (by the founders of Three Dog
Bakery) and realizing we had room for another dog in our lives, we
set out to find a dog with special needs who needed a forever home.
Visits to Petfinders.com and other adoption websites led us to Bleu,
who was about 90 minutes away at a shelter, and we've been packmates
ever since! Bleu is crazy over lightbeams (ie. flashlights, reflected
sunbeams, a shadow on the lawn) and we've learned we cannot "play"
this with him, because it tends to make him a bit neurotic for days,
resulting in several ruined pieces of furniture! People tend to react
to him with "what a beautiful dog! What breed is he" (from dog lovers)
and "is your dog safe?" (from non-dog lovers). Bleu's unusual eyes
(one blue, one brown) tend to make an imposing stare that is quite
intimidating to non-dog people! But we know him better as a big dopey
clown who is ecstatic over freshly washed hair, damp towels, and of
course...DINNER! Since adopting Bleu, I know that I always want to
have at least one special needs pack member in our household (we currently
are a pack of six, three of which are human). Bleu has recently become
my running companion and is up to 5-milers...I think he is becoming
my personal trainer as his preferred pace is slightly faster than
mine! "

Popeye

Bulldog mix. "Even though Popeye is deaf, he is the best dog
I've ever had. Extremely smart and talented, he has picked up on everything,
including vibrations to know when I am home. He is very spoiled and
demands constant attention, and is constantly on my lap, weighing
in at 90 lbs. He enjoys dog parks, car rides and hiking. I adopted
him from LA where he was residing in a shelter, having escaped two
abusive households. He is the love of my life!"

Town: Pacifica,
California
Deaf dog: Freckles is a 4-1/2 year old long-haired
Chu/Spaniel mix. "We rescued Freckles at a small dog rescue service.
When the van arrived at a PetsMart store, all we could hear was lots
of barking. I laughed and said to my daughter --I hoped she's not
a barker. When they opened the van, she was the only one not barking.
At this point, no one knew she was deaf. We fell in love with her
right away, and immediately took her from the van and started shopping
for her. That night, I began to discover that she was probably deaf.
I took her to the vet, and they believed that she was more than likely
born deaf. I had passed up another dog that had been posted as deaf,
and my daughter got all excited and said we should now adopt him too,
so they could be companions -- but, I felt one dog was enough. I bought
a sign language book, and began teaching her sign language -- she
caught on so quickly. She is such a smart -- loving -- sweet dog,
and she communicates all her needs to us. We absolutely love having
her. I look forward to many special years with her. It was so rewarding
to watch her bloom as she discovered we understood her. She had been
returned by a family that I believe didn't even get that she was deaf,
not dumb!"

Town: Castro
Valley, California
Deaf dog: Nani is a Catahoula Leopard Hound. "She
is very smart and very stubborn. If she does not want to do something,
she becomes an inert lump! Most times she is very sweet and loving.
She knows she is a lap dog and hasn't figured out why she can't really
fit in my lap when I am at the computer. She is an incredible scent
dog. When she wants to find someone, she catches the scent and off
she goes! This particular talent also helps her with counter surfing
and kitchen garbage rummaging. Nani enjoys her daily romps with Gabriel
and Maggie on the ridge near home. She is very friendly with everyone
she meets, and likes to be petted and admired."

Town: South
San Francisco, California
Deaf dog: Teddy is a 10 year old Miniature Poodle.
"We just adopted Teddy from a wonderful Foster Mom in Ventura,
CA, from the Poodle Club of So. CA. She got him out of the Camarillo
shelter just before Christmas, had dental done and he looks great.
He is just learning his way around here. He is a smart little guy
and watches us and let's us know when he has to go out. He needed
a home and I really didn't think much about him being deaf. I was
looking for an older dog who might need a home so we can give him
a loving forever home. Deaf is no problem, he knows where the kitchen
is."
Human companions: William and Evelyn Utterback
Other pets: Midnight, black miniature poodle who
might be 12 or 14, who knows.
