California Deaf Dogs

<< Back to CA map

Town: San Diego, California
Deaf dog: Tito is a 7 year old Corgie/Terrier Mix. Tito was a rescue dog from a local animal shelter. He has been a part of our family unit for six years now and if you didn't know any better, you'd never
know he is deaf. He is great with maintaining eye contact. Tito knows several hand commands and with the right treat in your possession, he'll do anything!

Shaak Ti is a 2 year old Dalmation/Jack Russell/Basset Hound. Shaak Ti is more enthusiastic and vibrant than most hearing dogs. She adores going to the dog park or the beach where she can chase birds, wrestle with other dogs and generally just run around until she is tired. She is a lover and a
snuggling machine and will hop into your lap before you've even decided to sit down. Even when awakened from the deepest of sleeps, she never startles, just slowly opens her eyes, sticks out her tongue halfway and lets out a big yawn.
Human companion: John and Alycia

I'm Rocket and I'm a 4 month old Boston Terrier. I was born Oct 2007 with a condition called hypospaias as well as being 100% deaf. My new family drove 3000 miles to get me so that I didn't have to fly anywhere. I joined their family on Christmas Eve 2007. I had an emergency surgery on
January 10th 08 and they fixed my problem - you can read more and see pictures at www.myspace.com/rocketboston I love my family, they sign with me and I am learning very fast because of that. Hope one day to meet you!

Town: San Marcos, California
Deaf dog: Luke is a 2 year old Border Collie. I was aware that Luke was deaf when I adopted him from his breeder. I am an ASL student, and have always been interested in Sign Language, and the deaf culture. After stumbling on to Deafdogs.org and seeing all the availabe dogs, I found Luke...who at the time was named Hughes. Now he is the love of my life. He watches closely after my son, and helps me herd and work my goats. And for some reason he and my husband conspire against me, and Luke always seems to end up with most of the bed at night.
Human companions: Ariana Guzman, Husband, and 1 year old son.

Cali

Town: Vista, California
Deaf dog: Cali is a 3 month old Australian Cattle Dog. We just rescued our little girl from a small rescue up in the Riverside area a week ago. When we got her we did not know she was deaf and the rescue didn't disclose that information. We tossed the idea around of giving her back but she already had my heart, it only took 1 day :-). We are starting puppy classes with her next month and so far she has taken to hand signals very well! She is potty trained, crate trained and learning come, sit and down right now. We have a 2 year old Rat Terrier named Bailey who acts as Cali's ears. She follows pretty much every move he does, and we are teaching Bailey to fetch Cali when it is time to come inside. It's such a shame that the owner of her litter dumped them for dead at 2 days old. She is just as smart and cute has any other puppy her age!
Human companion: Anjeanette and Jimmy
Other pets: Bailey ~ 2 y/o Rat Terrier, Stormy ~ 7 y/o APHA/AQHA Mare

Max

Town: Ramona, California
Deaf dog: Maximus (Max) is a 6 year old Great Dane. Max was born deaf, and was adopted by a couple who kept him until he was 5 years old. The couple never gave him any obedience training. When the couple had a baby, they decided that it was too dangerous for the baby to have Max around. They gave Max to Indian Dane Rescue in San Marcos, California. Rick and I had already adopted Goose, another Dane from Indian Dane Rescue, and we wanted to adopt another Dane. Rick was on business travel when Rene introduced me to Max, and it was love at first sight! He is such a big guy and so very loving. When Rick returned from travel, "WOW" was all he could say. Max bonded quite quickly with Rick and I, and he is slowly learning how to be a member of a family with other dogs and cats and doing quite well. Rick and I are using a combination of dog training hand signals and American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate and train Max. He is a very fast learner. However, when he doesn’t want to do something, he just simply turns his back on you like any child…– LoL! Having a deaf dog is no more difficult than having a dog that can hear. There are some minor adjustments ~ like how to get their attention when they are not looking in your direction but that has been easily overcome with squirt bottles or flashing lights pointed at him. So ~ please do not discount having a deaf dog in your family they are loving and deserving of a happy life as with any other animal." You can read more about Max HERE.
Human companion: Rick and Jill Zimmerman

Blizzard
Blizzard
Town: San Diego, California
Deaf dog: Blizzard is a 17 week old Boxer.
Human companions: Janice Gumtow
Other Pets:All the dogs I foster are special needs dogs. They are usually crippled in some way and I rehabilate them and get them adopted out. Buddy - My Boston Terrier came to me this way - he was kicked and suffered spinal damage, he could not walk and he was starved so that you could see every single bone sticking out on his little body - he has no control over his urine/bowels. He wears a diaper at night only now and now walks and continues to improve daily.
Bridget - Tibetan Terrier - was hit by a car and suffered a broken front elbow, a dislocated front elbow and broken pelvis. She has had many surgeries and is now begining to use her front legs more. We call her our prarie dog as she sits on her hind legs to mask the discomfort of standing on her front legs.
Rosie - Poodle/Maltese was injured but don't know how. I rescued her when the owners called to have her euthanized. She ended up having knee surgery and is now recovering and she can be adopted out as soon as she starts using her back leg.
Kaiser - Doberman - clean bill of health

Horchata Ivette and Santana
Horchata Ivette and Santana
Town: San Diego, California
Deaf dog: Horchata came into our lives in August 2001...like an angel sent from heaven. We did not know she was deaf when we got her and finding out was hard. After a little research, we decided to follow our hearts and keep her. We got her a "hearing" dog, Santana, a month later and now they are inseparable. Horchata has done excellent with learning hand signals and facial expressions and was easier to potty train that her hearing baby brother. You can visit them both at http://www.geocities.com/torero_77/

Barking Baxter at 12 years old
Barking Baxter at 12 years old
Town: El Cajon, California
Deaf dog: I adopted Baxter through the Afghan Rescue Foundation of Southern California. Even though he wasn't an Afghan, they won't turn away a dog in need. He had been rescued from a home where he was neglected and abused. No one realized he was deaf so I didn't know what I was in for - what a challenge! He probably is deaf from lack of health care for ear infections. He had other serious health problems when I adopted him, including very bad teeth (7 extractions - ouch! $$$). I am just now learning how to train him with body language and hand signals. Since he is approximately 12 years old, he is very mellow most of the time (until he spots a cat!) and is training well. I think it is me who needs the training more than him. It is a challenge to train him not to bark at the cats and birds and anything else that wiggles. Even so, he is a wonderful little character with a loving heart and a gentle spirit. I am glad that fate brought us together!
Human companions: Dee Prindle
Other Pets: A semi-feral elderly hermit gray tabby cat named "Starvin Marvin."
Other Comments: I have no experience with dogs with special needs such as Baxter and his deafness. I would appreciate any hints, tips, or other information, on caring for and training him."

Camera Shy
Town: Oceanside, California
Deaf dog: Li'l Bit came into our home 2 years ago as a foster (I am a dismal failure at fostering--I keep them) but she has found her permanent home. We got her from a young couple that had a small child, they were in the service and were being transferred to another state. They took the cat but not Li'l Bit, had even considered having her put down because she supposedly had seizures and was deaf. Well, she has never had a seizure in two years and she has adjusted to the rest of our crowd of animals. Our other little maltese furkids kind of showed her the ropes, i.e., sleeping with us with her own pillow, playing with the cat, patiently waits for her food, all kinds of things but most of all, a cuddle bum. She is a love and absolutely adores my husband. We built the back seat of the car up to right below the window so all four of them (especially Li'l Bit) can see out and have a little excitement in their life.
Human companions: Scott and Gigi
Other pets: 3 other maltese (all rescue), 1 indoor only cat who is also a "dumped" rescue who is now 16 years old
Comments: This year I have lost one of my maltese who was blind to a brain tumor, one to cancer and one to old age and one persian cat to liver failure so it has not been a good year. All of my animals are rescue except our fish.

Town: Chula Vista, California
Deaf dog: Olive is an 8 month old Dalmatian. "We fell in love with Olive at our first visit to the local shelter. She came into our lives at the age of 3 months. She is our first dog, and for months we were not sure that she was deaf. The veterinarian told us that puppies tend to act as deaf, so we were waiting for puppyhood to pass. We live in Southern San Diego and we visit Coronado Dog Beach very often. She is the most loveable and friendly dog."
Human companions: Milena Ivanova
Other pets: We have a three year-old cat who is a little bit upset about our new baby.

Blue
Blue

Drake

Town: El Cajon, California
Deaf dog: Blue is a 7 year old Dachshund. "Blue is a blue and tan Double Dapple dachsie who was born deaf and also has limited vision due to subluxated pupils (another common problem in Double Dapple dachsies). He was neglected by his former home, so he only has 3 teeth left in his mouth, and his jaw was broken at some point in time and healed a little off center. He's an amazing companion for our other dachshund, a female rescued from a puppy mill. The two of them are best buddies and being deaf doesn't slow down Blue in the least bit! "
Human companions: Matt and Katie Earle
Other pets: Nellie, a hearing Dachshund and 4 rescue cats, Blue, Tiny, Sky and Willie.
Email: kearle@chsd.org

Deaf dog: Selby McGill is an 11 year old Australian Cattle Dog mix. " I adopted McGill from Helen Woodward Animal Center. I knew he was deaf and that was not an issue. He makes very good use of his other senses to compensate for his lack of hearing. No one ever realizes he is deaf. He is a wonderful member of the family. Living with a deaf dog isn't difficult - it just takes a little adjusting in how you communicate."

Kitty
Kitty
Town: San Diego, California
Deaf dog: Kitty is a 3 year old Australian Cattle Dog. "Kitty was given to us as a gift. When our friends chose her they did not know she was deaf. They kept her for the first few weeks with their hearing dog. This masked Kitty's condition, but it became evident as soon as we separated her from her hearing companion. Kitty learned signs quickly and is delightful to be around. We heard all the warnings about deaf dogs being aggressive or difficult to train, but we totally disagree. Being patient and consistent with her has worked very well. She is a neighborhood favorite. All the kids have to pet her as we go for our daily walks. She seems very empathetic to kids and they respond to her very well. We wouldn't trade her for the world. There are actually benefits to a deaf dog. She doesn't bark at trucks going by and isn't stressed by loud noises."
Human companions: Lauretta and Jim Johnson
Other pets: Two horses. Kitty is great with them and loves to go to horse shows.

Bruce
Bruce
Town: San Diego, California
Deaf dog: Bruce is a 4 month old Boxer. "Bruce is awesome! We got him late last night 8/15/04. We drove over an hour into the mountains just to pick him up. The breeder was going to put him to sleep because he can't hear. Let's be honest, I have 3 kids that don't listen half the time for no reason at least I know he isn't ignoring me. The second I saw him I was in LOVE! He has so much personality! He jumped in my arms and gave me more kisses then I have ever had! He sat in my lap and fell asleep like a baby on the way home. I know we haven't even had him for 24 hours but he is family! I am thankful that God blessed us with him!"
Human companions: Anthony and Sincere Robinson, children Bishop, 11, MaKela, 9 and Roiyel, 18 months.

Mr. Personality was born deaf, identified one week after his original owners purchased him from a breeder out of state. They immediately relinquished him to a shelter, which called a rescue, and he was subsequently posted on Petfinder and deafdogs.org. Egg is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. My boyfriend and I take our kids to San Diego's Fiesta Island all of the time, so if you are in the area we'd be happy to meet you there!"
