California Deaf Dogs

<< Back to CA map
Town: Madera, California
Deaf dog: Murphy is a 5 year old Great Dane. I rescued Murphy from the animal shelter in our town. She came into my work with a broken hip, and the shelter could not afford to take care of her so I decided to take her home and give her a chance. We were unsure if Murphy was deaf until we got her home and noticed she didn't react to sounds like our other dogs.
Human companions: Ashley and Kevin
Other pets: Bailey (Mastiff/Dane) Brutus (Jack Russell) Rex (Pit X)

Town: Madera, California
Deaf dog: Murphy is a 5 year old Great Dane. Murphy was brought into the Veterinary Hospital where I was doing my school externship by our local animal control. She had a broken hip and weighed 90lbs. Because of her broken hip she was to be euthanized. I fostered her until her hip was healed then adopted her. She has been a joy to us. Murphy is one of the most well behaved dogs I have ever had. She watches to see what we want her to do and uses the other dogs to know when to come to us. She knows basic commands using hand signals. She gets along wonderfully with people, children and other animals.
Human companions: Ashley and Kevin
Other pets: 2 Dogs, and 2 Cats

Sugar at 5 months
Sugar

Town: Turlock, California
Deaf dog: Sugar is a 11 month old female white Boxer. She was born deaf. We brought her home when she was 9 weeks and she has been our baby since then. She is great with children that visit our home and has enough energy to keep up with us. Sometimes too much though. Training was hard but she is smart and has a heathly appetite, which means she'll do anything for a treat. She has already learned ten hand signs at this point (9/2002). She is very loving and we try to pay her back all the love she gives. Visit Sugar's web site by clicking here!
Human companions: Jamie and Priscilla Suarez
Other comments: Deaf dogs are not any less of a dog then those with hearing. Sugar was born deaf and doesn't realize she is missing a sense. She loves life and we love her!
