Abby
Town: Redondo Beach, California
Deaf dog: Abby is a 2.5 year old Australian Shepherd. She is a deaf double merle red Aussie. We got her a little over a year ago from Aussie Rescue of Southern California. I've had deaf Aussie's since I was a teen-ager and always loved them. My wife and I had 2 Aussies and she wanted another but I wasn't going for it. I'd always talked about my deaf Aussies over the years and she started scanning the rescue sites until she saw a picture of Abby and fell in love. She knew little deaf girls were my weakness and took advantage of this and
sent me the link. I fell for it. We contacted rescue and made an appointment to meet with Abby and Diane, her rescuer. My wife was talking about meeting Abby, coming home and talking about it and maybe bringing her for a visit next week... sure sure sure. Once we got there and met Abby and Diane, I was sold. Diane felt
we were a great match because of our experience with deaf dogs and Aussies. I'd had Aussies since I was 12 or so. So when I started talking to Diane about bringing Abby home that day it sure surprised my wife. So, we ended up taking her home, introducing her to the herd and included her in the family. Abby is amazing!! Matty, our alpha girl, took about a week to accept her and Abby has settled in great! Abby has some vision problems but she is still wonderful. Once she realized that the fire hydrants weren't little people our walks went much smoother. We love her so much and she is unique in her personality as any Aussie. Anyone who thinks that deaf dogs don't move their ears and show expression with them would be totally amazed with Abby, she has the most expressive ears I've ever seen. We're so glad we have her!!!
Human companions: Paul, LeeAnn my wife, John and Jeff our boys who live with us, Laura our girl at college and Vanessa & Chris who lived with us but are now living in NY.
Other pets: Bruin our black tri Aussie and Matty who always lives in our hearts and souls.

Nixie

Town: Long Beach, California
Deaf dog: Nixie is a Wirehair Dachshund. Nixie is a spunky Doxie who, even though she is only 2 inches off the ground, thinks she is a big dog and will take on anything more than twice her size. Being deaf is not a challenge for her and she takes on life at full speed!
Human companions: Katherine and Justin
Other pets: Kellie the Calico Cat
Email: koppel_kat@hotmail.com

Benny

Town: Long Beach, California
Deaf dog: Benny is a 4 month old English Bulldog. I found my pup at a local pet store. I was in search of a companion for my other Bullie and came across this one, her name is Inana and she has survived pneumonia. From her pneumonia, deafness set in. I figured this would be great--they could each help each other out in different ways. One to guide the other and one to comfort the other. I have family members who are deaf. Seeing as how Ii am new to deaf dogs, but am quite familiar with deaf people, Ii am very much so interested in any and all suggestions for training and caring for this fantastic pup.
Human companions: Benny LeMaster
Other pets: A hearing Bullie, 2 Bengal cats

Hank

Darla

Town: Orange, California
Deaf dog: Darla is a 1 and 1/2 year old Pitbull mix. My husband and I adopted Darla when she was just 5 months old at a local animal shelter. After we brought her home we noticed she wasn't responding like a normal puppy when we called her. We got her tested and the vet concluded that she was indeed deaf. She has been the greatest dog and responds very well with the hand signals I have taught her.
Human companions: Amber Auch and husband who is a dog trainer at a dog boarding facility we both work at.
Other pets: We have a cat named bonkers, two boas named baghera and sierra and our other dog named Petie. All of our animals are rescues except the snakes.

Buddy

Town: Orange, California
Deaf dog: Buddy is a 6 month old Boston Terrier. He was given to me by the pet store where I bought my first Boston. He was purchased by a family that no longer wanted him when they discovered he is deaf. He is a GREAT dog and understands signs pretty well for his young age. He lives with his Boston brother and they get along great. Very few problems with having a deaf dog.
Human companions: Joseph Lombardo
Other pets: 1 1/2 year old Boston Terrier, Mugsy

Tilly

Town: Pasadena, California
Deaf dog:
Tilly is a 6 month old Australian Cattle Dog. She came to us from a local CA dog rescue. I was specifically looking for an Australian Cattle Dog and found her on the internet. The rescue had no Idea that she was deaf. So we took her home and discovered that Tilly was deaf the first day she was with us. I suspected that she might be when she didn't respond to my voice. She would be asleep and we'd shout her name and no response until we touched her, gently of course as not to startle her. At first I was unsure of whether I wanted to keep her, fearful of getting in to a training situation where I and my family would be in over our heads, I began searching on the net. I was looking for training suggestions and found alot of encouragement on this web site. Because of it We have since decided to keep Tilly and have found that she is intellegent and a very loving and trusting dog. Our two young children have even learned some of the sign language and standard obedience signals and Tilly is learning pretty much like a hearing dog except that we need to get her looking at us before we can give her a command. If we are in the house I can stomp on the floor to get her attention and if she's outside at night I have turned on the porch light to get her attention. I've tried using a flashlight too but she just wants to chase the light and won't look at me! Even though it is a challenge to have a deaf dog, it is worth it to us. My husband reminded me that we prayed for the right dog for our family and Tilly is the one that God sent us!
Human companions: Kathy Scroggins, husband and two daughters age 5 and 9.
Other pets:
cat and horse

Shea

Town: Sherman Oaks, California
Deaf dog: Shea is an Australian Shepherd/Saluki, she is a rescue dog. We believe she was born deaf. She also has diminished eye sight. We adopted her when she was about six years old. We knew that she was deaf, and neither of us had ever had a deaf dog before. She has a sweet personality that we fell in love with. We were worried about the potential challenges that might come with adopting a deaf dog but Shea is a very easy dog to live with. She's very calm and only barks occasionally. When we're home she follows us around and when we leave she sleeps
under the bed. We communicate with waves and gestures. She watches us closely and when we need her attention we just stomp on the floor. She'll warm up to people and other dogs on her own terms but doesn't like to be touched by strangers.
Human companions: Alaina and George Kommer

Radar
Radar
Town: Rancho Santa Margarita, California
Deaf dog: Radar is a 1 year old Dalmatian. He has only been a part of our family since December, 2000 but already I feel like he's been our baby since he was born. He is very well behaved but when it's play time, watch out. He loves to do the indi-500 in the backyard and there is no stopping him. He's definitely a lover, not a fighter and he loves to cuddle. We adopted him from an animal rescue who got him from the pound. He was malnourished and had a major case of hair loss. He was nursed back to health and then put up for adoption. He is now 51lbs and all his bald spots are gone.

Camera Shy
Town: Irvine, California
Deaf dog: Kiara is a 7 month old Dalmatian. She is new to our family but she seems to fit right in. She is very active and loves to play with her new brother Doobie who is Lab/Dalmatian mix and only a month older than her. Kiara was dropped off at the pound because she couldn't hear. The person will never know of what they are missing out on. She is so sweet and loving and deserves to have a happy family. I have read some articles in the past few days about deaf dogs and some of them say that you should put a dog down as soon as you know that they are deaf. I can't see where that frame of thought comes from. These dogs are just like any others and need they same love. They just need to be trained like any other dog but it's just in different ways. Any hearing dog can be aggresive if not cared for properly and any deaf dog can be a great pet if loved enough.
Human companions: Kenny & Becky Pacheco (daddy & mommy); Ricky - 11; Michael - 10; Alyssa - 9
Other pets: Doobie, Lab/Dalmatian mix; Zazu, Kovu, Shakes, & Angel Cats; 2 fish - no names; Rocky - Snake

Camera Shy
Town: Cameron Park, California
Deaf dog: Otto is a 3 year old Dachshund. We brought Otto into our home several years ago because he was an abused dog as well as being deaf. He was going to be euthanized if a home was not found. We already had three dogs and had never had a deaf dog in our family. However, we fell in love with Otto when we saw him and happily included him into our family. Otto is great. The first night we had him he fit right in and made himself at home. Bringing Otto into our family is the best thing we did. We took him to the University of Ca., Davis Vet Center to check his eyesight, as it was thought at first he was also blind. However, they tested him and concluded that he was not blind, but likely had limited vision. This does not hinder his ability to play, etc. He goes through the doggy door, plays in his sand box, loves the beach, and generally has a great time. He is a handsome, sweet Doxie.
Human companions: Patricia & Mike Welsh
Other pets: Harry - Doxie - 15 yrs, Rose - Doxie - 3 yrs, Patsy - Basset - 3 yrs, Dixie - Parakeet, Elvis - Chubby toad, and Owen - Lizard

Bonnie Blue
Bonnie Blue

Molly
Molly
Town: Los Angeles, California
Deaf dog: Bonnie Blue is a 5 year old Sheltie. Her family says "I got Bonnie through Southland Sheltie Rescue (a GREAT organization!). Bonnie is a "double merle" - mostly white with blue merle and beautiful blue (crossed) eyes. Bonnie is the happiest dog on the planet and has fun everywhere she goes. Once I was walking her and a motorist leaned out of her car window and yelled, "Great dog!"
Molly is a 2 year old Border Collie. Her family says "I got Molly Molly Border Collie through the DDEAF e-mail list, and she was on the DDEAF Adoption page. Mollie is mostly white with a black saddle and a black derriere. She was born on a ranch where they wanted to euthanize her because she was deaf. A rescuer took her to find her a home. I wish Molly could be a full-time working dog, as she is very, very serious about herding. She herds my cats, the Sheltie, and me. I hope soon I will have some extra time and money to get her involved in agility or herding. Molly is too A-type to just be a suburban dog. She does love to play in the back yard, dig holes, and chase imaginary animals.
Human companions: Fran Longmire
Other pets: Five cats, two parrots. Having deaf dogs is an advantage when you have parrots, especially bossy birds like my African Grey, Henry. He likes to constantly scold or give orders to the dogs, and since they can't hear him, they don't have to do what he says. My other bird is a Cockatoo, who is very, very loud. Deafness is a definite plus when you live with a Cockatoo!

Stella

Town: Hermosa Beach, California
Deaf dog: We don't have her yet, she will be coming to us in two weeks when she's 8 weeks old. I am gathering up information and learning some sign for when she arrives. The breeder was going to put her to sleep because she was born deaf and is white ... so, we took her...

Update 8/11/07: Stella is now 5 and 1/2 years old and here is a recent picture of her.

Camera Shy
Town: Rancho Santa Margarita, California
Deaf dog: I selected this dog from a litter of pups that my boyfriend bred, she was unusual since she was all white. I selected her for her personality. She is the cutest thing. It took a very long time to realize she was deaf since there are 2 hearing dogs in the house. They alert her to the things she cannot hear. She is a normal Jack with tremendous energy who loves her big Rottweiler sister more than anyone. Jack is a one-and-a-half-year-old Jack Russell.
Human companions: Kathy, Ed and James
Other pets: Kloussy, a Rottweiler mix-female Ti, her biological brother but from a previous litter

Lola
Lola

Lola's Companions-Boggie and Betty
Boggie and Betty

Town: Glendale, California
Deaf dog: May 13th, 2002. We have not held Lola (a French Bulldog) yet, she is only 6 weeks. She is still with her family and breeder and we just found out that she is deaf. My sister and I have been surfing the internet looking for information to get ready for her arrival. This is how I came to this site...
Human companions: Laura and Barbara
Other pets: "Boggie, a 3 year old fawn boxer, and Betty, a 2 and a half year old white boxer. We thought Betty might be deaf because of the reputation of white boxers and because she has so much personality, stubborn... but she could hear. Since we started our research into deaf dogs to prepare for Lola's arrival, we have realized that Betty is deaf in one ear. If she looses sight of us and we call her name, she runs into the opposite direction looking for us."

Rollo
Rollo
Town: Los Angeles, California
Deaf dog: As of this writing, we adopted Rollo (boxer) from the Long Beach SPCA just under a week ago. We didn't set out to adopt a deaf dog, but instantly fell in love with this boy. He was put on hold by another family, but the volunteers told us they'd call if the adoption didn't go through. And lucky for us, it didn't! Rollo is the sweetest dog. We can't imagine why he ended up at the SPCA. He loves people, and just wants to play with all other dogs of both sexes. We're giving him some time to adjust to his new home, then we're going to get him into some obedience training to learn how to direct him with hand signals. If only we could learn to get a handle on his snoring...
Human companions: Helen and Paul
Request: "We'd appreciate any referrals to trainers who have worked with deaf dogs in our area."

Tacky
Tacky (left) and Pepe (hearing)
Town: Laguna Beach, California
Deaf dog: We just found out that Tacky (long hair chiuahua) was deaf, we've had her since she was 3 months old. We couldn't figure out how a dog so smart was so hard to train. I'm glad I found this site so we can learn more about how to train her. I can't believe people actually put these darling creatures to sleep just because they can't hear!!!

Ruby
Ruby
Town: Woodland Hills, California
Deaf dog: Ruby (an Australian Cattle Dog) is a rescue dog that I located on the Internet and had transported to our home in California. No one realized that she was unilaterally deaf because she was fostered with other dogs that she could cue from. We noticed it immediately but didn't care - we already loved her. We decided that we could train her with hand signals and voice commands and one way or the other she would thrive and learn - and she has. She is a beautiful dog with a beautiful tempermant. Each day she seems to understand that she is finally "home" and her charming and funny personality blossoms in noticable stages. She is cherished treasure that we are happy to have found!
Human companions: Teresa, Bob, Emma and Charlotte Foote
Other pets: Judy a boy cat, Harriet a wild cat and Tiger our cat that thinks she's a dog!

Camera Shy

Town: Granada Hills, California
Deaf dog: We did a lot of research on dog breeds and had decided that a boxer would be a great dog for our family. We have two small children and wanted a dog for them that would really love them. We found our Buster (American Bulldog Mix) at a pound. I was pretty adamant about adopting from a pound to save a dog. Buster had been at the pound and was close to his last days. He was listed as an 11 month old boxer. The day after we brought him home, we realized he was deaf. I got online and read a ton of info. After a week we realized that he still had teeth coming in. Upon talking to a vet, we were informed that he was probably about 6 months old. He was already 70 pounds! At that point we recalled the comment of the first vet who said that he'd never really seen a boxer with his coloration. He's white with large brown patches. Again, we got online and found pictures of younger American Bulldogs and decided that we think that may be his mix. He has a nice underbite and a docked tail. If he really were a year old, he'd definitely be a boxer. We're pretty confused as to what his mix is, but we really love him! He is such a sweet boy! He loves our kids and is the best playmate to them! They lay blankets over him and lay against him to watch television. They put hats and princess crowns on him! He loves it all! He's very silly! Without a doubt, he has turned out to be the best dog we've ever owned!
Human companions: Kathie and Kevin, Nicole, 3 years old and Hayley 1-1/2 years old.
Other pets: Tonka, a Rottweiler; Marcus, a Lab/Spaniel mix; Moose, a cat; and goldfish, Dorothy and Sprinkles.

Zodiak
Zodiac
Town: Costa Mesa, California
Deaf dog: Zodiak (Dalmation) was rescued from a high kill shelter in Los Angeles. Although we didn't know he was deaf at the time we adopted him, we couldn't resist such a handsome dog with such a wonderful disposition. All he asks for is human contact and company. Our other dalmations help him out by being his ears for him while he helps them out by smelling things miles away. We are lucky to have found him!
Human companions: Kim and Kristin
Comments: Zodiak motivated us to take a sign language class that has proved interesting and very rewarding.
Other pets: 2 Dalmations-Zack and Zephyr, 1 Cat-Calypso, and a saltwater aquarium.

Gordie
Gordie
Town: Monrovia, California
Deaf dog: Gordie is an 8 month old Jack Russell Terrier. "We got Gordie from our local pet store. We chose him becuase of his spunk. He was such a playful and happy dog. He came right to the window every time we passed by, and we fell in love with him. We noticed that Gordie was deaf when we couldn't get him to follow voice commands in obedience class. We took him to the vet and they diagnosed him as a deaf dog. They were very supportive and encouraged us to train our little guy with hand commands. Gordie is such a loving dog. He is fun to be around and makes us laugh every day. He is a hit at our local dog park, and plays well with all the other dogs."

He's growing up to be a very goofy, affectionate dog who likes the ocean, little boston terriers, and pulling my boyfriend on his skateboard.
