Echo
Town: Mesa, Arizona
Deaf dog: Echo is a 4 month old Dalmatian. We acquired Echo when we purchased her littermate Ember a couple of months
ago. We had previously owned a Queensland Healer that was deaf and decided that the two sisters should remain together. They are both very sweet and loving, but I must say that Echo (our deaf puppy) sleeps like a rock compared to her sister. At around
8 weeks she already knew hand signs for sit and stay, and although she was terrified of walking on a leash at first, she now loves to go for walks or rides in the car.
Human companions: Cece, her Husband and 2 Sons ages 9 and 17.
Other pets: Pepper - a 14 1/2 year old Queensland Heeler mix

Macy

Town: Waddell, Arizona
Deaf dog: Macy is a 5 month old Dachshund. Macy is the sweetest little thing. She came to us from a rescue group here
in Arizona. I initially planned to foster her but within a day fell in love with her and knew she belonged here with us. She is definitely a spunky little thing but a quick learner as is our Jack Russell, Riley's shadow. She is learning hand signs quickly and has learned to come, no and no bark signs. When she first came to us she was very aggressive but has since learn that being loved on is nice and has learned her boundaries with biting hard on the kids with simple handsigns. She is such a joy!
Human companions: Lynn, her Husband and 6 kids
Other pets: One Jack Russell-Riley and two Chihuahua's, Molly and Harley

Leroy

Town: Phoenix, Arizona
Deaf dog: Leroy is an 8 year old Lab. When I was looking for an adult dog to adopt, Leroy was puttering around towards the back of the rescue facility. When I learned from the caretakers there that he was deaf and frequently found himself amidst other dog skirmishes because he was oblivious to the commotion going on around him, I started to think. I didn't begin my search with a "special needs" dog in mind. I thought I might be able to give him a quieter, no pun intended, environment to live in. I was very scared about taking him on and wondered if he would be nervous, jumpy and a thousand other myths due to my own ignorance of owning a deaf dog. I wrote to several folks on this site asking for advice and what I got back that put my fears aside was that a deaf dog is a dog first, the breed second, and by chance, deaf. Leroy is truly a Lab's lab. Very patient with my other pets and children we meet on walks. His deafness isn't even an issue and I usually forget. He has changed my life for the better, as only dogs can, and I'm very grateful I chose to put aside my self-conjured fears over adopting a "deaf dog". Many thanks to the other folks on this site!!
Human companions: Leroy's Mom

Town: Tucson, Arizona
Deaf dog: Brooklyn is a 2 year old American Bulldog. Brooklyn was given up to a CA shelter/rescue for "eating the roses" and was finding life in foster homes difficult. He was deemed "food aggressive". I flew there, met him and drove back to AZ where I introduced him to my family of 5 other dogs. After an adjustment period, he is the biggest baby ever! Lives for love and
affection and snores like a freight train! I saw his goofy face on Petfinder and knew he deserved a chance.

Mozart is a 3 year old Boxer. Mozart was a rescue through Almost Home Boxer Rescue in Phoenix, AZ. He was a stray slated for euthanasia because he was deaf and acted up when being leashed. He was my first "deafie" and continues to be my most challenging family member. He has the most comical personality and a very special "deaf dog LOUD voice". I wouldn't trade him for the world. He was pictured in the Tucson LIfestyle Cover Dog issue from 2009.
Human companions: Cynthia
Other pets: 4 other Dogs, 2 Boxers, an American Bulldog and a Pitbull

Ted

Town: Scottsdale, Arizona
Deaf dog: Ted is a 2 year old Pug. Ted's original family surrendered him to Arizona Pug Adoption & Rescue Network (APARN) when he was about 1 year of age. We don't know if they realized Ted was deaf, or that he was born with severe hip dysplasia. His back legs were very tiny from an almost complete lack of use, they looked like little chicken legs. Needless to say, he was in a lot of pain. Once Ted was relinquished to APARN, they scheduled surgery on his first hip. He then went to a foster home. Our family met Ted at APARN's Pug-a-Palooza event in Nov. 2008, where we fell in love with his big/wide eyes. No matter where we went in the room, Ted kept watching us. When we brought him home, he immediately claimed his status as "official king of the
house" over our other dogs and cats. It took us a few days to realize Ted was deaf. We just kept thinking, wow he's really aloof. The real test was starting the vacuum cleaner right behind him. He didn't notice. It didn't really upset us that Ted was deaf, we knew we could work with him and that he would be happy. But we were heartbroken though, that he was over a year old and
nobody had ever noticed. Ted is a trooper and a huge snuggle bunny, with a personality the size of a Mastiff. When we started teaching him hand signs, he was SO happy that finally someone was "talking" to him! He loves learning new signs. And obeys them - most of the time. We didn't know much about deaf dogs before adopting Ted. Now we wouldn't hesitate to adopt another deaf pet.

Deaf dog: Duncan is a 2 year old Boxer. I spotted Duncan on a local internet list and was concerned he would not get a good home. Town: Avondale, Arizona
Deaf dog: Vala is a 2 year old Toy Fox Terrier. Vala is very sweet and loving. She gets along great with her 5 other "sisters". She is a master manipulater with toys and will always steal your sleeping spot. Her sense of touch is really strong so when you pet her she gets extra enjoyment from it. Her top lip goes back and she shows you her "snuggle tooth"! She is a joy to have in our family.
Human companions: Bill & Brandi
Other pets: Carter & Hannah-Miniature Pinschers, Joli-Tibetan Terrier Mix and Lily & Pippin-Chihuahua Mix
Email: willard_brandi_AT_yahoo.com

Town: Pomerene, Arizona
Deaf dog: Amanda is a 2 year old Dachshund. Amanda is black and while spotted and the sweetest little love of a dog. Our main problem with here is that she is a barker and has started our other little ChiWeinie barking also. He is a miniature Dachshund and Chihuahua, not deaf and we had trained him not to bark with the clicker/reward system. This method will not work with Amanda...we love her to pieces but the barking...I have been using the squirt bottle, that helps, but she thinks I am calling her to come sit in my lap...then there is outside....!! They both bark and make everyone crazy. She is a rescue dog also.
Human companions: Marilyn and John
Other pets: Chester the ChiWeinie

Daisy May

Town: Phoenix, Arizona
Deaf dog: Daisy May is a 1 and 1/2 year old Boston Terrier. Daisy is the sweetest dog I've ever had. She is so full of life and is
always ready to play. We were a little scared at first to train a deaf dog, but she picked up signs really fast. We would rescue another deaf dog in a heartbeat.
Human companions: Kimberly and Jason

Foster

Town: Mesa, Arizona
Deaf dog: Foster is a 6 year old Queensland Heeler. Foster was a pup when I got him. A friend who works for a rescue group found him on the euthanasia list, and rescued him for me. Foster is smart, loyal, and funny. He wishes he could chase all of the cars and cats we encounter on our walks. He loves to roll around in the grass and get belly rubs. When I tell him "Shhh" he
whisper barks! He's the best watchdog too.

Town: Phoenix, Arizona
Deaf dog: Gypsy is a 1 year old Pit Bull. Gypsy is the best thing that ever happened to me.My Aunt got him for me for christmas. She got him from a woman who didn't have time to give him the love and proper care he needed.I dont think she even knew he was deaf. Anyway there's this myth about Pit Bulls being very agressive, even some of my family members said I should "get rid of him" because of his breed and especially if he's deaf. I believe dogs get agressive simply by the the owners lack of love and respect for these wonderful animals. It's the way you raise and treat your dog. its not the breed. Gypsy has proven this to every one I know and they no longer judge the Pit Bull breed or deaf dogs. and it was a great experience for me too. I didn't know I could train a deaf dog until now. He's become a permanent addition to our family.Gypsy and all deaf dogs will prove to many that deaf dogs can be just as wonderfull as the rest.

Fiordiligi and Dorabella

Town: Phoenix, Arizona
Deaf dog: Fiordiligi born in March 2007 is a mellow red double merle Australian Shepherd. Besides of being deaf she also has micro ophtalmia. Smart, sensitive, and loving. She keeps learning touch signs and filling my heart with love.

Dorabella also born in March 2007 blue double merle Australian Shepherd. She is still a trouble maker and way too smart for her own good. She understands hand signals -some ASL and other signs I've made out for her. She entices her sister to chase her, and since her vision is limited, and Dorabella knows it, she enjoys teasing her; though Fiordiligi is no dumb dog, sometimes she catches Dorabella.
Human companions: Dasha
Other pets: Pamina (white factored sable border collie -born in 2006), Sadko (german shepherd mix -born in 2007), Cherubino (siamese mix -born in 2007).

Town: Benson, Arizona
Deaf dog: Murphy and Henry are 16 week old Australian Shepherds. Murphy and his brother Henry were dumped in the desert outside Benson when they were 4 weeks old. The Benson pound sought foster care becasue the dogs were too young for puppy shots and needed socialization. I agreed to take them. Both boys have vision difficulty but can see adequately to 10-20 feet. At age 8 weeks Murphy had the first of two seizures but he has been seizure free for the past three+ weeks. The pound signed the boys over to me, and I intend to keep them. They get along beautifully with my other dogs who range in age from 1 to 13 years.
Human companions: Sybil Erden and life partner TJ who lives 2 minutes away and spends a lot of time with these boys.
Other pets: I am director of The Oasis Sanctuary --- a lifecare facility for exotic birds. We have farmed animals, cats, dogs and reptiles in addition to the birds. Some of our dogs and cats are up for adoption on Petfinder....but these boys have a forever home.

Deaf dog: Peaches is a 2 year old Blue Tick Hound Mix. Peaches was adopted from the county shelter. We didn't know she was deaf until she had been home about ten days. Kate

Town: Waddell, Arizona
Deaf dog: Kate is a 7 year old Saint Bernard. She was born here in a litter of 6 puppies. She was one of the puppies who had a rough start in coming around at birth. Kate was the puppy in the litter who just stood out to me..she is intelligent, sweet and just had that something that made me decide to keep her. We figured out that she was deaf by the age of 4 months when she did not wake up when we would come home. She was BAER tested bilaterally deaf. She learned early on to take the cues from her sisters and mother, as well as the other animals in the family. As all of my dogs are house dogs....she fit right in. Kate is our night-time watchdog...while the others sleep, she keeps an eye out for anything out of the ordinary. She sleeps in the daytime while we are at work! Kate has a great sense of confidence about her and is known to see ghosts. Yes, that is what I said....she "knows" when someone has passed away and I swear that she commninicates with them at times. Kate is the love or our lives and as she has been the first deaf Saint Bernard that I have ever known about...she has taught me a lot in teaching others about deaf dogs!
Human companions: Dan & Debbie Ryan
Other pets: Saint Bernards, her sisters Chocolate Mousse' and Cookie Dough, Destiny, Misty and Max (wanna be Saint)...7 rescued horses, 8 rescued chickens, several cats and fish.

Ty, (not 9 wks anymore!)
Ty
Town: Phoenix, Arizona
Deaf dog: Our Blue Merle, Ty, was born on 4/25/01. We got him from my in-laws at 5 weeks. It took about an hour before we knew he was deaf. We had our doubts about whether we could take on the responsibility of raising a deaf puppy when we got him, but we made the commitment to him and began to educate ourselves on how to communicate without words. At almost 2 years old, Ty is very intelligent, lovable, and has a pure heart. He knows upwards of 35 signs, but often his excitement and exuberance in public doesn't allow us to show this off.
Human companions: Chris & Desarae Jenkins
Other pets: Sophie, Ty's ONLY feline friend.

Camera Shy
Town: Buckeye, Arizona
Deaf dog: Buddy is a 5 year old Dalmatian. His family says "I received him from my vet. He was purchased at a pet store and returned because he was deaf. The person had children and afraid they would get bitten. Wanted the vet to put him down. She knew I was an animal lover and had a Dane puppy the same age. I of course took him. I have five totally fenced in acres. He was quite the challenge, as I never raised a deaf dog before. He is also the best behaved dog we have. He always watches me and comes every time I signal him. I have one little problem, he is very protective of me and is afraid the 2 young danes are going to hurt me. He gets in front of me and growls at them. He stops when I correct him. I would like him to stop this behavior and I am working on it. He is very smart and brave, sometimes I think too brave. He gets along great with all the other animals. The cats just love him. If I had to do this all over again I would. Deaf dogs make wonderful pets.
Human companions: Randi Schmidt, Julie, and son Charles

And he smiles a lot :) Mack has a website.

Deaf dog: Tonka's owner, Lewis, writes: Tonka is a pure breed Dogo-Argentino. He was to be put to sleep. His only flaw... He is deaf. I have never seen a Dogo in my life, (Other than in a few pictures). He was such a good dog, he was very well behaved on the 40 mile drive back home. I can not believe the size of his paws, they are huge!!! It was because of his huge paws I decided to call him Tonka, like the tonka toy trucks. He has already won me over... He is awesome!!! Tonka is my first dog... and he is deaf. It is going to be a challenge to train him. It is hard to get his attention unless I have a food treat. However, I am also looking at a more rewarding relationship with a deaf dog as I hear the are much more affectionate.

We thought he was cute, but when we were informed he was deaf, we knew we had to have this little guy, thinking it would be awhile before someone came along to take the time with this pup. He is so smart and it only takes a few times for him to learn a command. He has already mastered sit, come, stay and watch me. He is a marvel and a joy. Camera Shy Town: Golden Valley, Arizona
Deaf dog: I just moved to Arizona 3 months ago. Since my house is on 10 acres, I decided to adopt from the shelter. I adopted 2 pups, 6 weeks old, brother and sister Saint Bernard/Malamute. The female (Lucy) has no problems and looks just like a Malamute with Saint Bernard paws. The male (Mack) is deaf and has a blue and brown eye, and shows all the features of a Saint Bernard. They do everything together and are great pups. I did not know Mack was deaf when I adopted him, but I am an animal lover and will do everything to make him happy with my family and life. It will be hard training him due to his size and his sister not being deaf, but I am sure I can do it with all the love I have to give him.

Town: Phoenix, Arizona
Deaf dog: Arial is a 2 year old Dalmatian mix. "Arial is an absolute angel! We were fortunate to find her at the Arizona Animal Welfare League when we were looking for a companion for our 1-1/2 year old Border Collie. She's the most gentle, loving soul....who adores (and plays constantly)with her Border Collie "sister" and is great with her two feline "brothers". She's also a cheerful and patient companion to her human "cousins"...all of whom are under the age of six. Fortuntely, my husband and I were unaware of the many "deaf dog myths" when we adopted Arial....because not a single one applies to her. To be honest, most of the time we forget she's deaf - because her other senses are so heightened. She's been a wonderful addition to our family."

Amadeo and Dolcezza
Amadeo and Dolcezza
Town: Tucson, Arizona
Deaf dogs: Dolcezza is a 1 year old white Australian Shepherd. "Dolcezza ("Dolci") is like most any other pup -- sweet, rambunctious, adored by her family. But she's also a very special dog - she is completely deaf and has only a very slight ability to perceive shadows with one eye. We have had her since April 2002."
Amadeo is a 3 month old white Australian Shepherd. "We brought Amadeo home in April 2003 to join Dolcezza. He is completely deaf but can see just fine. We hope he will be her seeing eye puppy - as well as her constant playmate. So far they play constantly, and he is learning a different set of rules for playing tag with a blind dog. They are a match made in heaven! We taught Dolci with touch signals, and are now learning ASL to communicate with Amadeo." Check out both dogs on Dolcezza's website.

Perdi
Town: Tucson, Arizona
Deaf dog: Perdi is a 4 year old Dalmatian. " I recently got Perdi from an older woman who couldn't take care of her anymore. When I saw the listing in the paper for a 4 year-old dog who was deaf, I was afraid no one would want her and she would be put to sleep. She is the sweetest dog. She loves to be around people and other dogs, and although I have heard most Dalmatians are very hyper, she is very mellow and a great apartment dog for us. I am so glad to have her. My husband has never been a dog person, but he loves Perdi and is glad we got her."

We have no kids and all the time in the world to spend with our little guy. He is all Boy and nothing about his deafness keeps him from living a happy life.
